It's not enough for Wal-Mart to dominate grocery aisles, it has to dominate the organic grocery aisles as well. An article from CNNMoney today notes that Wal-Mart has already doubled the amount of organic products on its shelves this year and hopes to become the low-cost leader for all things fresh and healthy.
The article quotes Andrew Wolf, analyst with BB&T Capital Markets, as warning that natural food purveyors like Whole Foods, Wild Oats and Trader Joe's should be wary.
But Wal-Mart shareholders should be happy to see their company move into this high-growth, high-margin business.
Business Week covered this trend in late March with a focus on what organic farmers think of Wal-Mart's plan. (Hint: not that much).

Wal-Mart's are on the rise, prices going lower and lower, (supposedly) employee's hours are cut, quality merchandise is a thing of the past, imports up, exports down, corporations are getting richer and richer, we're at war, oil doubles in price, very few "good" jobs left in this country, fewer with medical benefits and still fewer with pensions, social security is on the brink, we're being invaded by illegal immigrants, and people wonder if "fresh" produce being sold at a Wal-Mart is a good thing or not. Someone stick a fork in America. We're done.

Since this nation has a weight problem, myself included, it occurred to me weeks ago that I could cut my food consumption in half. Half of the really wholesome foods, whole grains and organics really do satisfy my apatite and I can afford to shop at Whole Foods, Trader Joes and Wild Oats. Shopping at those stores is a wonderful experience and a treat. Nix Walmart. They are not good corporate citizens and want nothing less than the whole pie. Won't we be sad when they are the only game in town for everything and anything!!!!!!!!! Then you will find out that they will not be so cheap and we will have to buy what they want to sell us. Think about it. I'm sticking with my plan and I get to shop these awesome stores. It's the difference between an Edsel and a Cadillac.

I do not care for Wal-Mart's produce and the meats are pre-packaged and sometimes not fresh. So, I'm not sure I'll buy organic foods from them either. Most of the time I buy meats from a butcher shop...at least I can see what I'm getting and I don't mind paying a little more for higher quality food items. Overall, Wal-Mart is compromising their quality as it expands its operation.

i work for wal-mart. everything that has been said is absolutely true. more than 75% of wal-marts product comes from overseas. to include some of it's foods. if you can, don't shop wal-marts. it's in your best interest.

walmart is a company in the grocery business trying to run it like their general merchandise side of the store. they have no idea what a fresh area is nor the amount and quality of the people it takes to operate it. service is no longer available due to the cut backs in hours and people. they are doing their best to get rid of any of the people that had experience from other chains that they used to get them in the grocery door to start with . ask the young part time kids a question who are stocking the pre packaged meat...all you'll get is the deer in the headlights look..sorry...maybe someday will come when it's not all about greed...the door greeters are the next to go...

I like my gm corn and my preservatives, if someone is stupid enough to pay more for their oats (a fool and his money), then I say good for Walmart for fleecing those who are not particularly good with hard sciences. Viva Granola!!

Wal-mart will do to domestic organic farmers what they have done to all domestic manufacturers. Give them an unrealistic low price for their product and if they cannot meet it find someone else in a developing country that will. The consumer that prefers organic produce will pay more for it. I personally would not shop at Wal-mart if they gave things away. The ignorant masses do not understand that nothing is "free" or "cheaper" in this world, someone pays for it. Little do they know that it is THEY, in the long run, that are most effected by Wal-Mart's low prices. How many US jobs will be exported before we realize this?

it seems to me no matter what walmart does we are in the limelight for negative comments. I have never seen any other retailer or grocier constantly badgered in this way. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..............could it be because we are the biggest thing out there? it is all union bullcrap, who's only interest in walmart is all those employee paychecks and it's killing them because they don't get ther cut.they don't give a rat's behind about the associates or there benefits and pay. you all need to do a little research. walmart has made more of it's associates millionaires than any other company there is. And walmart employs more people than our federal government. Are you planning to feed all those people if they no longer had a job?..........Didn't think so. We also do more good works for every community that we are in than any other company, but no one ever talks about that. how about if you union idiots get a real job and stop worrying about mine? and get your facts straight when you talk about benefits and pay issues. Stop twisting the facts and tell the truth.

amputee's and none walking people take electric carts out of the store. Some of these people have no means of getting in/out of the store.

Since Wal-Mart gets most of their product from China. Are they going to also get the organic food for China.

I work at Sam's and I've read the comments. Yes you may be helping to support the Chinese and others but look at who's ringing you up. You're also helping us Americans who are here when you shop there. Everyone wants to think of everywhere else, yet you have people who work there that no one cares about. We need to pay attention to the employees and try to get more respect for them. As for the organics I think it's a great push and I hope it works out.

Talk about playing fast and loose with semantics. I will offer $10,000 cash for an inorganic vegetable or piece of fruit. The terms are that we stick to the definiation of 'Organic'. Coal, but the pure definition is Organic, though I doubt that the vegetarians would pour much on their morning mush. If one means 'grown without' additional chemicals, notwithstanding those found in the ground and produced by the plants themselves, then fine, but the use of 'organic' is laughable.

For those of you above that wonder what the difference is in the farmers that hire the illegal immigrants or Wal Mart. Well Wal Mart had always boasted about selling American Products, and being the American Store. Go take a look at where their merchandise comes from. Not America...the good ole sweat shops overseas. You think they have benefits?

diana-you need to do some research. the sprawlmart millionares are not employees who are payed substandard wages, miniimal benefits at am extreme price, are not allowed to use their so called employee discount on food items, are paid less for working in their local so called rural stores only 20 miles from a metroplex, and prices on almost all items in a store 4 miles from the other "super store" in the same county are higher. I am not a union fan. Am Boycotting WalMart. I knew Sam personaly and know he never intended the things that are happening. Advertiseing Good Works is not impressive.HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM-ONLY AN AD. Who are the real "idiots" as you put it? I do respect your right to voice your opinion.

I would never buy groceries at walmat, let alone organic products. I will stick with Whole Foods, Trader Joes, or some local independent grocery stores. Doesn't walmart realize it is the epitomy of consumer capitolist greed, and the people who shop for organics for the most part would never support them. They pay their employees squat, make the states pick up their medical tabs, and make it so the other companies don't want to give benefits either, so they can be like walmart. Thank you, I won't shop there for groceries, and I certainly wouldn't trust the quality of their organics.

food is something I don't look to much as a consumer at WalMart. Sam's Club seems OK but I don't shop there much either for food. Our family believes in Organic foods and we will try it. I only hope that someone from Walmart's corporate reads this and understands that for many of us its trial and error and Walmart hopefully will retain the leading name of being a corporate giant but also a responsible entity to the public especially when it involves food for the little consumer like myself. In reading the comments on foods in this article, I am not sure if they have been the leader of quality in the past that many depended on. Hopefully they will make sure that the stepup in organic products reassures that we can trust them in the future. We have a super Walmart being built as I write. I am sure that I will be skeptical but a willing participant in this phase being initiated by this corporate giant> Time will tell if I will be a long time participant and consumer in this produce initiative.
