In what I can only describe as a perfect setting (and headline) for a post, the California town of Hercules has chosen to oppose the introduction of Wal-Mart stores into its city.
This is not a new situation in California, where cities and towns all over the state have chosen to keep Wal-Mart out. The reasons run the usual gamut: loud noise, increased traffic congestion (LA does not need that), protecting smaller retailers, etc.
Hercules is even thinking of invoking eminent domain to seize the land Wal-Mart would like to use for a new store.
Echoing things we've said before, Wal-Mart's PR image is one of a ruthless chain devoted to opening stores everywhere. A quote from this article mentions, "There aren't a lot of good stories about Wal-Mart."
I always have to wonder in cases like this -- are the true feelings of the community being represented in the anti-Wal-Mart protests? The vocal minority can usually play the game well. Do the non-vocal majority want a Wal-Mart and who is asking them?
Food for thought.

I do not & will not shop at stores that use their scare tactics and $$$ to continue a business grab and breakdown of fair labor treatment. I am not now, nor have I ever been a union supporter, but this company deserves to have their employees walk. The monopoly laws will eventually have to be invoked if they are allowed to continue their practices. The neglect of moral and ethical conscience from the corporate leaders is enough to raise red flags everywhere. The profit of the corporation is their only goal..not saving anyone anything. The quality of the products sold speak volumns to the true motives. The horror stories of parking lot murder are a perfect mirror reflecting the affects of this congolomerate on the local economy and worker moral. I empathize with their lack of motivation and hope all who shop these monstrosities realize how they contribute to the downward spiral we see all around us. There used to be pride in Made in USA! Now we can be proud of our ability to exploit third world countries. Where is that PRIDE people? Please reconsider walking in the doors the place. We can only regain our place in the world economy one person at a time. God Bless us ALL

I AM ALL FOR WALMART. I know some of you people who apparently don't have to work and don't have children. Can stop at all those little locally owned stores, one to buy groceries, one to buy the kids new outfits, and one to get the oil changed, but for us working mothers who don't have all the time is the world who need to do all these things in the whole hour and half of free time we get. It's nice to have just one place to go then head home. You do not have to like Walmart or where they buy the products that they sell, but the simple fact is it is fast convenient and provides jobs for local people. I enjoy that there is one place to stop where I can get everything I need and get the kids pictures taken while I wait on my car to get new tires and an oil change. If you don't want it right in the middle of town do like my town did and put the on the outside of town buy the highway, it worked out very well in a little town that had absolutly nothing in it and not very many good jobs to offer. STOP COMPLAINING AND GROW WITH WORLD.

too little too late we gave up the right to complain about the big buz guy a long time ago0 if you would have done this much complaining when your housing prices started to go up in the late 90's early 2000's then I can understand but you didn't so shut up and eat the crap so you can get the best price for your house .

Eminant domain. Property rights are not subject to majority rule. Remember your house or business can be next.

Zoning is the appropriate response. If the local political process is not into responsible zoning, THAT is the problem, not Walmart or Target or anyone else. I'm more inclined to boycott the town of Hercules CA than Walmart! As far as protectionist sentiment against Chinese products, you lazy bums better get your own productivity up.

I grew up in Hercules. It's a great close knit community unlike any other I've seen in the US. It's good they're fighting Wal-mart, which is is often the final nail in being like everyother town

WALMART A GREAT COMPANY ... IT IS UP TO THE CITIZENS OF A GIVEN COMMUNITY TO EXPRESS THEIR VEIWS BEFORE WALMART GETS ANY APPROVALS..BUT MOST PEOPLE ARE TOO BUSY & LAZY THEREFORE WALMART GETS IN. I AM FOR FREE ENTERPRISE AND THE INDIVIDALS RIGHTS TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES..SO MANY REMAIN SILENT !

I think it is very sad that a resident of New Orleans. La. would forget who was first on the scene with relief supplies for the residents of New Orleans.I will never forget that line of Wal-Mart trucks rolling into town while FEMA, our Mayor and our Gov. still didn't know what or how to react. Wal-Mart put their money where the rest put their mouths only.

Walmart in a sense is a great store. It provides balance to otherwise out of control prices in small towns where the four local businesses control a monopoly, especially when it comes to gas prices. It is a one-stop store where it has everything you could possibly need at reasonable, sometimes outrageously good prices. Yet, in this day and age, it can be damaging, especially with all the loopholes in monopoly laws these days, dating back to the 70', and 80's when the loopholes were created. K-Mart was the king for a while, but Walmart was able to take the king from the throne, now K-Mart is back to square one in the south, and worse. Question is...Can any other chain store, or any store for that matter, take on the king Walmart, or have the laws that relate to corporations and monopoly's pretty much solidified Walmarts position in the world, as long as their game is played right? True, we are a country of capitolism, but we also have our flaws. The person who is the best at finding the flaws, and using them to their advantage, will always come out to be the winner. Red tape, and cheating may not be right, but it certainly works, but it also eventually fails, and the stone that was rolled, always rolls back.
