I've mused on this subject a few times before, but after reading this article, the subject of an "environmental Wal-Mart" was just begging to be brought up again. H. Lee Scott, CEO of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., recently gave a speech that outlined current and future efforts by the world's largest retailer to create more environmental sustainability by using several processes and methods. One of the more striking ones to me was the corporate fleet fuel efficiency situation. A Wal-Mart PR manager said that in addition to upping truck MPG from 6.5 to over 13, that Wal-Mart would be adding 100 more hybrid vehicles to the existing hybrid fleet of 100 vehicles. This would save over 26 billion pounds of CO2 from entering the air in the next 14 years.
With actual packaging also under assault by environmental groups and anyone concerned with "trashing" the planet, Wal-Mart also plans to change to a corn-based, biodegradable packaging for its produce products. Just changing the packaging on four products, as a start, would prevent 100 million containers a year from being dumped into the environment.
While there are some vocal detractors to this effort by Wal-Mart, the future will tell if it actually holds to these rather grand ambitions of making more earthly sustainability part of the Wal-Mart way.

Wal-Mart greener? Hmmm...don't they buy most of their products from China? Don't most Chinese manufacturers have the worst track record in the world for pollution? Child labor? Aren't 90% of the rivers in China totally dead? Isn't the air in Chinese manufacturing areas the worst in the world?
Wal-Mart greener? Please!

Wal-mart Green? Why not it could happen? But I think there's more chances of the Da Vinci Code being real than that happening... Hope it all works out.

Wal-Mart green is the same as mine, the kind you store at the Bank. (of course they own the bank).
Hey they are keeping America air clean by shiping the manufacturing to China. I don't blame Wal-Mart, I blame the Unions, Scum sucking lawyers and politicians that make it impossible to make a proffit manufacturing in the U.S.. It used to be made in U.S.A. was a sign of quality, now its just a novelty.

"my info on my email address will not be shared "... then why do you need it? .. and if the world's largest retailer adds 100 hybrid vehicles just what % of their total fleet does that happen to be --- i suspect very miniscule.. spare me the spin... Wal Mart will not make any substantial changes that will ultimately or remotely affect the bottom line.... show me some real changes and then let us wax poetic. Wal Mart needs some street credit first and i am 51 years old and conservative in the South.. Lots of rhetorical b.........

I think the fact that Wal-Mart is going green is great. Now if they would just go American also that would be even better. I watch the news and hear that Wal-Mart is one of the biggest abusers of illegle labor laws. My wife and I shop at Wal-Mart and we spend ALOT of money at Wal-Mart, But when you here things like that it make you wonder why are we supporting them when We have got to drive by Mjiers to get to them. Wal-Mart is biulding a site closer to my house and work was stopped at the site for illelge immigrantes. I guess I need to know why, Why should my wife and I keep supporting this. Why should We spend our money that we work so hard for at a place that does not support us.
Is any thing being done to fix this problem? If So please tell me. I like Wal-Mart and I like to shop at Wal-Mart so please stop suppoting illegle immigrantes and start supporting American people.

Walmart Greener!?! That will be the day. Just how many forests are cut down each day to make room for the monstrous retailer? How much oil and gas runs off of their 10 acre parking lots and into rivers and streams? If they want to be greener, they should switch to solar power and use organic cleaning supplies, and support environmental organizations while really working to make a difference in this urban sprawl country!!!

WALMART CARES NOTHING ABOUT ITS CONSUMERS, SO LONG AS PEOPLE GIVE THEM BUSINESS. WALMART IS NOT DOING BAD, THAT IS THE PROBLEM. THEY ARE TAKING OVER SMALL TOWNS AND CLOSE COMMUNITIES, LEAVING NOTHING BUT CHEAP BEDSPREADS AND TACKY DECOR TO SHOW FOR IT. ITS A REDNECK STORE AND NOTHING MORE.

Circus Tim blames all our troubles on "Unions, Scum sucking lawyers and politicians that make it impossible to make a proffit (sic) manufacturing in the U.S..." Yes, paying our citizens a living wage and holding manufacturers legally accountable for their defective products which occassion unreasonable risks of harm to consumers is NO way to live in a civilized society! Circus Tim sounds like another Abramoff Republican stooge who thinks all trial lawyers are worthless.....until they NEED one, of course. THEN, guys like Tim are the FIRST one in the lawyer's waiting room, seeking their pound of flesh. These wonderful Republicans....they will do ANYTHING to support business or the insurance/oil/credit card/Haliburton industry, all at the expense of the ordinary American. God love 'em.

This is for Peggy's comment....Wal-Mart has repeatedly been scrutinized as one of the WORST companies in America to work for. They treat they're employees like crap! They even fired the Smiley Face! How can such a great company fire a Smiley Face??? I'll believe that Wal-Mart is greener when I see it. Until then, it's just a corporation talking s***. To that I say, if you're talking s***, what's the anal orifice saying?

Yes, complain about Walmart if it suits you,but the facts are quite evedent, many lower and middle class familes could not make it if they didnt exist. Other merchants want you to buy local---sure its a good idea if your Income is six figures. I prefer to remember the Good ideas that Sam Walton had that have been distorted by the present management of Walmart

WALMART SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES. THEY ARE GETTING GREEDIER & GREEDIER. THE CEO WAS EVEN STEALING FROM THE COMPANY. LEE SCOTT NEEDS TO TEACH HIS STORES TO NOT ONLY TAKE CARE OF THE CUSTOMERS BUT TO TAKE CARE OF HIS EMPLOYEES. I HAVE SEEN THE TREATMENT OF THEM FIRST HAND. VERY SAD HOW DIFFERENT WALMART IS NOW FROM WHEN SAM WAS ALIVE!!!

Does anyone realize that Wal-Mart does use energy efficency in their buildings? Have you ever noticed the sky lights in the ceilings? Those, plus the use of lights with dimmers, help to reduce the amount of energy they use. They also incorporate other sustainable ideas within the architecture of their buildings. It is true that they are building many structures, but how many farms and woods are being lost to "Stepford Houses?"
Yes, there is more that could be done, but how many of you do your part to help minimize the extravagant use of our limited resources? How many of you car pool to work; walk or ride a bike when you can instead of driving?
It's easy to point out the negatives of others all the while ignoring those same negatives in ourselves.

i am an employee of wal-mart. and yes they also have some issues. but i see them at least trying to correct their mistakes and make the issues better. in order to accomplish this, it takes time, to make even a simple 90 degree turn. despite all the flack they take, even hourly, from customers that yes, steal, trash, sue, you wonder why they even bother. just think if someone came into your home daily and left you food, trash, took your clothes out of your closets, drawers and left them strewn about, and yes-even excreted on your floors, without even a simple "excuse, i made a mess, can i help clean it up" the average person would just toss that "someone" out of their home, thank you for the vent.she
