iPods better than beer, college students say

beer is sad now that the ipod is kingBusch Lite is so last semester!

In an almost revolutionary aberration, iPods have bested beer in a biannual survey of U.S. college students conducted by Student Monitor. Only one other time in the survey's 18-year history has beer failed to be named the most "in" thing among undergraduates (for the record: the Internet, 1997). Of the 1200 students surveyed, 73% said iPods were "in," compared to 59% a year ago.

Interestingly, Facebook.com was tied with beer at 71%, and second-most popular among college kids. Maybe Apple should buy Facebook.com and celebrate by brewing a special-edition hard cider.

It's worth noting, however, that my babysitter and my little sister -- both penniless college students -- have iPods, while neither my husband nor I have made the plunge. The question for Apple should be whether the coolness of their music player will last longer than the coolness of (as Jacqui Cheng from Ars Technica puts it) "Facebooking that chick you made out with on Friday."
