It's a sad day for race relations in this country when a prominent Civil rights leader goes over the line from being provocative to downright offensive. Andrew Young, hired by Working Families for Wal-Mart to improve the giant retailers' image, is stepping down from his position after he was quoted in a Los Angeles paper criticizing (to put it mildly), mom-and-pop stores that operate in urban neighborhoods.
For Wal-Mart Stores (NYSE: WMT) this is yet another painful day for its public image. It started the week taking political hits from presidential hopefuls. Now that Young can no longer be the face of the kinder, gentler Wal-Mart, who will the company turn to?
The first part of Young's widely quoted comments aren't so bad. He reportedly accused small urban stores of "overcharging us, selling us stale bread and bad meat and wilted vegetables." That point is well-worn and most city residents will recognize an element of truth to it. There are often small shops in poor neighborhoods that are dirty, expensive and badly run. But we frequent them anyway for convenience since there are few alternatives.
If I had been in the room with Young, I can picture myself waving my hands in his face and saying "stop, stop," after he made that one point. That was provocative enough. But Young went on to vilify ethnic and religious groups that often run small shops in many cities. I won't even begin to take those remarks apart. He is plain wrong on so many levels.
What's sad is that by mixing a half-truth with bigoted remarks, Young has no doubt triggered thousands of painful and damaging debates in homes, offices, stores and bars around the country today. I just read a bunch of the comments on AOL's message boards and already the blame, anger and accusations are flying.
Rather than improving understanding, I fear these debates will create more wounds and resentment between racial and ethnic groups. My only hope is that at least some people talking about this story will use Young's statements as a way to build bridges rather than erect higher walls dividing us all.

Andrew Young is entitled to say what he feels like saying, whether anyone likes it or not. This baloney of being politically correct is nothing but phoney anyway because everyone has their prejudices, not just white people.

I don't get why the statements he made was a considered racist. Anyone who has grown up in certain type of neighborhoods where the general business community knows that are certain indivuals usually of certain race who provide really horrible conditions to buy items from. He was stating common known fact of those who live in black communities. I am half jewish. I know anti-semitism and racist when I have experienced or heard it. I don't see the statement he made as racist.

I will be eager to see how Mr. Young's comments are treated by the main stream media in light of Mel Gibson's recent crucifiction (sorry about that!) for poorly chosen words. As Rodney King asked, "can't we all just get along?"...

yes indeed it is sad times for walmart and its employees because of changes in upper managements personal and political agendas they views of sam walton have been sadly misconstured he new that taking care of the customer as well as his empoyees were priority. now not only the bottom line comes first but also the ideas of sam walton have been subverted to the point of nonexistence. the stock market is proof that things have changed for the worse with walmart corporate image!!!!!!

I'll bet ML King is rolling in his grave right now - in one fell swoop this idiot has probably undone a great part of what he worked hard to accomplish.
He's not in this battle because he truly cares about equality - he's in it for the notoriety and the $$. Sad shame.

HE SPOKE THE TRUTH...PLAIN AND SIMPLE. AND THE SAD TRUTH IS, THERE WILL ALMOST ALWAYS BE SOMETHING TRUTHFUL SPOKEN THAT SOMEONE ELSE TAKES OFFENSE TO. I WASTED 4 YRS. OF MY LIFE AT WAL-MART AND WAS FORCED OUT WHEN MY MARKET MANAGER FOUND OUT THE GRAND CHILD I WAS RAISING WAS BI-RACIAL. KNOWING THAT MY GRANDAUGHTER WAS GOING INTO DAYCARE, HE PUT ME ON ALL NIGHTS AND WEEK-ENDS.
HE TOOK FOOD FROM AN INNOCENT CHILD'S MOUTH AND JEOPARDIZED OUR HOME. HE CAUSED ME TREMENDOUS HARDSHIP BECAUSE HE GOT MY UNEMPLOYMENT CHECKS STOPPED; AS LACK OF CHILD CARE IS NOT A VALID REASON TO LEAVE A JOB IN MY STATE AND HE OF COURSE LIED TO THE JUDGE ABOUT THE SITUATION. THE FACT THAT BOTH WAL-MART AND MY STATE LET HIM GET AWAY WITH BLATANT RACISM IS FAR MORE INSULTING TO ME THAN ANY "TRUE" COMMENT MADE BY AN AMERICAN OF ANY COLOR. I WORKED MANY YEARS AT AN ARAB RUN HOTEL AND THEY DO RIP OFF AMERICANS, I BOUGHT GAS FROM AN INDIAN OWNED STATION THAT WAS CITED FOR "WATERING" THE GAS AND REFUSE TO PAY $3.00 FOR A LOAF OF BREAD & $5.99 FOR A GAL. OF MILK FROM THE "CONVENIENCE" STORE IN MY AREA OWNED BY YET ANOTHER IMMIGRANT HERE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OUR COUNTRY'S GOODNESS. I LOATHE WAL-MART, BUT THE TRUTH IS THE TRUTH.
SPEAK ON, MR. YOUNG....FOLKS MAY NOT LIKE IT, BUT WE ARE DEFINITELY LISTENING!

How very sad it is not to remember how blacks in this country have been treated and still are treated in this instance as well as other's. The Jewish people in this country have long been known for taking advantage of my people and so have the Asians. I guess there are groups who still don't want to be known as slave traders and haters of the black race. They have more than showed there true colors and if there are groups out there who don't want us to recogize the injustice we have suffered and to say it publically, Too Bad. History is history and if you want to change it then you should be willing to try and clean up your acts. We as a people know the difference of someone being unfair and predjudice...unlike those who would choose to try to make us forget and call us wrong. Until this country changes it's policy and fairness in all areas of life against people of color we will speak out aganst injustice weather other's like it or not. Jews and Asians have never stopped talking about their holocaust...Well, people of color won't either. We have been sorely taken advantage of in this country and around the world where the white man has lied about us and mistreated us. Look who throws us off the planes for nothing other than they can, it's white stewardess and airline captains to remind us that we are not equal in this country and we are reminded of it all the time. We have given so much to this country and it's never enough to know we are talented and smart. How dare you or any other group to speak about Andrew Young or any other leader that truly shines the light on prejudice that still exists in this country and abroad. Until this country faces their injustice there will always be suspicion and finger pointing until there is true change among those who have willingly done wrong to our people and admit their wrong. Wake up America your dirty laundry is still showing.

Why is it that someone has to be a bigot or a racist when they tell the truth or make a comment about a certain situation or time in history in this country. I grew up in Harlem New York in the 60, 's 70's 80's and I knew exactly what he said was true, does that make me a racist No, did it happened the way he said it Yes, am I a bigot No, am I a racist No, so what's the problem--- the truth hurts.
Is that why the Federal Government does not want to do anything about the explosion of ILLEGAL
PEOPLE in this country, is it because the Federal Government does not want to be seen as being racist, or bigots come on, the problem is huge fix it.
Notice I did not say Illegal Alians because that might be recist, come on the last time I checked the dictionay Illegal means against the law. So you are telling me that this country has more law breakers that the population any small country on the planet over 12 millions and counting and nothing should be done about it. That is why I watch Lew Dobbs on CNN every night is he a racist too? I believe he is right on the subject every night.
As a matter of fact I remembered when I used to walk into a Korean store in Harlem NY and they followed me all over the store and my white friend was doing the stealing and they did not have a clue because they did not follow my white friend only me.
And I do shop at Wal-Mart quite often, I am a Veteran. I went to Hawaii and was asked by a Filipino what was I doing in Hawaii. I understood what he meant, was he a racist I could'nt tell because after I cursed him out he took off running.
This sort of sentiment has been echoed by every racial group that america has imported since 1619 at Jamestown VA.
You go into Little Italy in NY, Koreatown in LA, Thaitown LA, Garden Grove CA (Vietnamese) Miami Fl (cubans) Queens NY Russians, Spanish Harlem NY, you will get the same Question What are doing in my Neighorhood?
The American Government has allowed every raical group on this planet to come here and claimed a piece of the country as its own, that should not have happened from the beginning, and then you tell me. This is ONE NATION UNDER GOD WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL, get my point. clean it up first.

We better (Americans that are LEGAL) start being alot less worried about being politically correct and worry about telling the truth and call a spade a spade in this country. This country is going to wind up a third world player in ALL REGARDS and all we will have to show for it is politicians in Wasahington, all of whomm are VERY politically CORRECT!! Andrew Young was right and if you grew up in an urban area (as I did in the South Bronx, NY) you would know it. Let's Be Real!!!!!!!!!!

As someone mentioned in one of the comments, Young has the right to speak his mind, but if someone at his level or in your neighborhood would have made these comments about black people, their would be some serious fires going on in some neighborhoods right now. Many people are taking advantage of these racial issues and hiding behind the word "descremination" to get benefits and better jobs. It's enough already! The statement Young made was true until he started pointing out specific groups and nationalities. He is right that the small neighborhood businesses may not be the best. I'm sure the Walmart people had to work their way up as well. And now they have the power, the money, the reputation, and THE CUSTOMERS. I FORGOT THE BEST PRICES.

It's about time that someone from the racist side of the black community be held accountable for their racist remarks. It's been amazing to me over the years how they can still make "cracker" jokes and sidebars publically, and expect from everyone else that we should all take it in fun or in jest. Yet, if someone of ANY other racial group makes ANY remark toward them that they deem off-color(?), the ACLU and the NAACP mount their high horses and demand that heads roll. It's great that their double-standard of this racist issue is being exposed and that they are being held accountable for their words/deeds. Other cases in point: Miss Black America, Miss Black Homecoming Queen, Miss Black etc, etc... If there were a Miss White Anything, Jesse ("got-to-keep-this-mess-stirred-up") Jackson, and his sidekick Al Sharpton would be all mustering the other racist ilk of their OWN faction and demanding their "reparations".

Speaking from my perspective as a person of mixed heritage and knowing that people of the world are always going to harbor resentment against others I know that history is going to continue to repeat itself. The fact that we all know that Mr Young spoke and told the truth about the high prices and deplorable conditions of the mom and pop stores is no cause to get angry at him. Weather or not he is racist or not is not the issue. Apparently we all have our preferences and knows the plights of the least fortunate or we should know the problems some of our citizens live with. In most causes the mom and pop who owned the stores did not live in the community where there store was located. Often there was a black, who may have managed the store, however they did not own the store. Little help and little money made to tend to the conditions of the premises or the produce sold in those stores. Some of the mom and pop did move to Florida after retirement. Some did get rich. Knowing that where in some instances when the mom and pop could get to own more than one store, their store in the more affluent areas sometimes had lower prices. This was practiced to, according to the owners and managers, combat the so called theft by the customers when sometimes the managers would tell some of the stock boys to load their cars with some items they were not going to pay for. I know that Mr. Young did not owe any apology to anyone. The people of America knows that this problem of racism is the fault of people period why should any of us get offended when we hear the truth? When heard acknowlege it and try to do your best to improve in your own life and not teach racism in your home. Mr. Young does not condone racism he is letting others know that it still exist and sometimes our big businesses practice it because they are run by people. Walmart have not always been honest and fair in dealing with people. One of their biggest claims in the past have been that all of their items were American made. Martin L. King Jr. has no need to turn in his grave because the truth has been spoken. Perhaps there is some guilt here somewhere. Past or history should be mentioned or taught so that people can try to avoid repeating what used to be or what used to happen.

I think that this man here done the RIGHT thing by walking away from a bunch of pretending so-called, people person, individuals. From the looks of it all, He had to have seen or over heard some phony racist remarks from in the company in order to leave any way. Look at it like this, he may have got a little tired of boosting sales from African American population for a bunch of pretenders. He may have NOT wanted to be an African American client magnet anymore! He got tired of the FAKENESS!
