Here we are waiting for Steve Jobs to take his accustomed center stage position while the world and financial market waits for what may be unveiled. With so much rumor floating around on the semi-annual hype of what Apple will release to the world, we'll bypass that and see what's in actual store here in a few minutes. All times below are in PST:9:55am -- sitting on Apple's rather-swamped website (I'd think, anyway) waiting for things to get rolling.
9:59am -- things look to be getting underway in San Francisco -- attendees are being told to turn off cellphones. That's a good sign!
10:03am -- Bob Dylan is off the speakers and Steve Jobs is on stage. What will he explode on the world today?
10:05am -- Jobs tells the audience that 65 million iPods have shipped as of June. That's market penetration for you. Jobs is going over the iPod universe, probably before he says "oh yes, and there's just one more thing".
10:10am -- technical difficulties here at Weblogs, Inc. -- maybe the server load due to Apple is ruffling server feathers?
10:15am -- looks like new larger iPods (in terms of battery life) and the second-gen iPod nanos will be out soon -- with thinner cases and in 5 colors (and with 24-hour batteries). 2GB (aluminum only) for $149
4GB (5 colors) for $199 and the 8GB (black only) for $249.
10:20am -- we're waiting for Apple's "big-time" announcement from the keynote by Jobs, as product revisions and explanations may take a while. Stay tuned.
10:28am -- new iPod shuffle product -- "the world's smallest MP3 player", in a new aluminum case. Also, the new iTunes store (version7), which is now the #5 reseller in the U.S. for legal music downloads, behind brick-n-mortar stores and Amazon.com -- and Apple is poised to bypass Amazon, says Jobs.
10:39am -- the "Showtime" bombshell starts dropping -- Jobs is talking about adding movies to the iTunes store. Oh boy -- her we go now. Amazon.com's Unbox service may not be able to hold a candle to this. More details coming...
10:42am -- new movies from the Disney-owned studios will be $12.99 for new movies -- and $9.99 for older movies. Here we go, folks -- Apple'c influence in the entertainment market just got stronger now that it has passed from music to television -- and now, into the movie distribution business. The same day DVDs are available from the Disney studios, they'll be at iTunes for download.
10:46am -- what are AAPL shares doing now? Not much, surprisingly (yet). AAPL is at $72.04 and rising by the penny...and now shares are going south a little again. Have to love 20-minute delays, yes?
10:50am -- Disney CEO Bog Iger was introduced and is talking about the marriage of content and technology. You got that right, Bob!
10:59am -- the "one last thing" for the day from Jobs -- which he says will be released in 1Q07, is this -- codename "iTV". It's a small-sized box that wirelessly gets content from your PC or Mac to your TV in the living room. That's right -- for those that just don't love watching content on your computer screen, just zap it from your computer to that new plat-panel TV. Very nice way to end the day. Very nice. AAPL stock is right at $71.73 per share (live quote) as this is being announced. Not that the market makers are paying attention to the live Apple keynotemaking trading decisions based on live information. Or, are they?
11:09am -- that's it, folks. New iPods (regular, nano and shuffle), new iTunes store with music, television and -- now -- movie downloads, and a new device to get that content off your computer or iPod and into the TV in your living room. Are these just what customers want? If Apple's history is any guide, then a resounding yes. Steve closes the show with musician John Legend -- perfectly fitting if you ask me.
