Wal-Mart promises to offer low prices, always. That corporate slogan should be ringing true for the price of generic drugs in its pharmacies soon. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT) announced a new program to sell generic prescription drugs to both employees and customers at sharply reduced rates.
Wal-Mart will apparently be selling generic versions of the 300 most widely-prescribed drugs for as low as $4 for a standard prescription, starting first in Tampa, Florida. That is cheaper -- way cheaper -- than many OTC drugs, yes? While this new Wal-Mart trial program will be featured in the Tampa, Florida market first and roll out to the rest of Florida in January, I think we can safely assume it will go nationwide next year. I sincerely doubt the program will get a tepid response in any way, shape or form.
With Wal-Mart being the ruthless and highly-influential giant in millions of American lives these days, is this new generic drug experiment an attempt to actually have a hand in lowering the cost of health care for its customers and employees? I think so.
Wal-Mart has lowered prices (and destroyed the profit margins of many a small company, many argue) on just about every possible category of merchandise there is. No, make that 100% of products in every category in retail. Why shouldn't health care come next? Wait a minute -- it is.
Get your high-fat edible cheese in a pressurized can, taco-flavored potato chips and then be able to get your prescription drugs to combat cholesterol all at the same time -- and at everyday low prices.

Good for WalMart. It is about time something was done about the high cost of drugs. Now maybe people can afford to buy the drugs they need.

Thank God for Walmart. At least someone understands I WILL shop at the place that offers the best buy. Keep up the good work and don't listen to the people who think we owe them a profit margin they want to live with. And by the way...If you don't want to work at walmart.,...DON'T. but don't make fun of the folks that do.

Sure people can afford them but MANY generics DO NOT WORK AS WELL AS the original drug. ASK YOUR DOCTOR! For example, pain medication, allergy, antibiotics many of these are not as effective. Overall the moral of the story is YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! Remember that!

Oh heavens, what a dilemma!! Walmart putting the squeeze on pharma companies. How to criticize when you both are hated? Driving the mom and pop pharmacies out of business? No, that doesn't work,,, there aren't any. Best just to remain quite and enjoy the public benefit. Whatever is done, do not praise.

I shop at Wal mart and or Sam's Club almost daily. It is what capitalism is all about. I currently get mailorder drugs through my employer's health insurance plan, but they charge more than this for co-pay. So, if my meds are on the list I will be getting them from Wal Mart.

While this will help a few. What about those of us on numerous medications? What I see is the price of Brand Names going up. Never fear Walmart will not cut prices just to help the poor. They will see profits one way or the other. Probably rasing the price of thise Brand Names (some of have to have to survive. Our purses will feel the pinch. Whether it's that cashier that checked you out or guy gathering buggy's down to where you wallet is.
Please, please people don't be blindsided.

The argument that drug companies make about research and development applies to some extent. However, they go far beyond that cost when the product is firmly established and successfully marketed.

I think this is absolutely the best thing that corporate America has done for it's citizens in a very long time. GO WALMART!
Pharmaceutical companies make millions and they send it off to lobbyist in Washington, when they could be lowering the price of their medications instead.
Politicians, when they need to be elected or reelected, take the money donated from the Pharmaceutical lobbyists and make promises to do something about the high cost of healthcare.
The American public is tired of hearing empty promises every election year. American's are not stupid, they just can't afford to keep the politicians and pharmaceutical companies in business at the prices they're charging them.
WalMart is a leader in the area of lowering healthcare costs, everyone else should sit up and take notice. I will at the next election.
Way to go WalMart! I'll be watching for the new "lower" prices in my little part of America.
WELL DONE!

Do you really think this is going to happen without a "price" to pay somewhere else? Wal*Mart and the entire pharm industry are both very sleazy. And as they've shown over the years, they're not to be trusted. Just watch. Somewhare along the line they'll stick it to us all when this deal rolls nationally in 2007.

Bravo to WalMart. I think if the pharmacutical companies would quit advertising drugs on TV then they could save millions of dollars and we would not be bombarded with drug advertisements. Generics are just as good as brand name drugs without all the hipe. I only wish my drugs were available as generics. Thank you WalMart for being on top of things. P Vindy

May your god bless wallyworld. Another horse and pony show from the Arkansas mafia. offer an illusion of savings,of which only a tiny slice of the population will be eligible to take advantage. Most drug consumers are now on public or private insurance. Get them into the store with the promise of cheap drugs and charge them $20 for a shirt made by child slave labor in Sri Lanka.

WalMart's idea is good. I'm waiting to see their implementation methods. As they say, the Devil is in the details. From what I hear, they are only offering VERY OLD generics and are omitting some of the most widely prescribed drugs which have recently come off patent such as Zoccor and Zoloft. Also, I never see any "links" to lists of the generics they are offering. Let's all hope for the best!!!

Please advise the correct site where I can view the new complete list of generics at $4. To-day's newspapers indicate that the original list has been expanded. Thank you.

Wal-Mart touts a few examples of generic drugs which do offer big savings and are widely recognized, but the vast majority are already inexpensive and are rarely used, yet they count in the big 300.
These examples are "Loss Leaders", sold below actual dispensing costs and used to draw people in and make profit in other ways.

I found the list of generic drugs offered by WalMart on their website under the Pharmacy section, its in a pdf format. If your drug is on the list or if your Doctor can switch you to a generic on the list, then $4 is a great bargain. If not, keep hoping that a new generic will be released soon to cover your needs. Its a good thing for consumers since other major chains like CVS and Walgreens will have to follow.

I, like many people am one that has always had to take what the company you work for offered for medication coverage, it changes each year and it goes up each year.
Mail order is the way alot of businesses are going now and with my co-pay my medications run close to $200.00 a month so I am very glad to see someone helping out people like myself or people that have no coverage at all.
I think that alot of times sick people will start drinking to make you forget about all the pain because they don't have the money to get medications.
Now we have one more person dependent on Alcohol and probably driving.
Thank You Wal-Mart and where can you get a list of the medications covered?
