According to one taste test performed among four experts in Canada, anyway. Yes, that's four coffee aficionados living in the Toronto area and working in the gourmet coffee field. Canadian Business magazine conducted blind taste tests comparing various drip premium coffees: McDonald's Corporation (NYSE: MCD), Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ: SBUX), a brand called Tim Horton's, and a new Coca-Cola Company (NYSE: KO) coffee called "Far Coast."
That's the order in which they ranked: McDonald's "Café Roast" blend being the winner with 6.5 "cups" -- as they called their ratings points. Starbucks came in a not-that-close second with 5 cups, Tim Horton's right on its heels with 4, and Far Coast dead last with one single point. And that's only because two judges were nice enough to award it a half point, while the others handed it a goose egg.
Coke introduced Far Coast to market to fast food outlets and convenience stores within the last year.

We have created the Starbucks nightmare by glamorizing them as THE place to get coffee. They are making a killing NOT because of their coffee, but the "hip factor". It's considered pretty darn cool to be carrying around a Starbucks cup, and people pay a small fortune for a cup of Joe just to be cool. It's utterly ridiculous. I don't care how good it might be, I refuse to support their market domination. McD's is just fine by me...it's cheap, fast and tastes good. It's just plain stupid to throw your money away like that!

Actually, I have to agree: McDonald's coffee IS much better than Starbuck's. Starbucks is just too strong and overpowering to really enjoy. I end up having to cut it with cream to tone it down. But McDonald's is a rich coffee without overpowering you. It has a nice, smooth flavor that is really good. And it costs a fraction of Starbucks, too. Plus, you don't get a rock-hard muffin at McDonalds, the way they serve them at Starbucks. (I can't believe Starbucks actually sells those little brown concrete blocks, and that people actually buy them.)

Starbucks is good, but certainly not worth the price or the wait. Mcdonlad's is much better than it used to be. Krispy Kreme has OK coffee too.

With a Tim Horton's on every corner in Canada, I am surprised that it didn't come in first! I love the coffee. Wish a franchise would open up south of their border!!!

I like just about every other coffee, like Carribou, Barney's, Joe Muggs, and many locals because they don't taste burnt. Starbucks does. But...they do sell ONE that doesn't. That is Kenya AA. It is reasonably priced and makes a great cup at home and is not bitter. hat is the main reason I go there and for the ambiance.

I'm so sick of people saying that Starbucks is so expensive! Yes, if you get a 9 word espresso drink it's not going to be cheap, but you can get the largest possible coffee for under 2 bucks!

I used to be a fan of Starbucks, but I have to admit that their staff has turned me off to them. There's always a fresh-out-of-high-school teenager behind the counter who thinks it's funny to try and slip you whole milk when you ask for skim! I can't tell you how many times that has happened to me. It's not funny and honestly should be illegal. I'm a paying customer and I expect to get what I ask and pay for. Not to mention the fact that it could cause some unpleasant digestive issues for some people....if you catch my drift. Note to Starbucks: your staff needs a verbal warning.

McDonalds coffee is so bad that they are giving away free cups all week in NY. You get what you pay for in this case you get a free lousy cup of coffee serve.

i still prefer starbucks coffee ... environment setup aside, i think starbucks give me the "real" coffee taste ... maybe mcdonald changed their recipe abit (i'm no chemical expert, so i can't comment what are the extra stuff being blended inside that coffee) to make it smoother ... however if i'm looking for something fast (and without a choice) then i might just hop-in for the mcdonalds ... but given the luxury of time, i'll still go back to starbucks ...

I worked 40 years in the coffee industry. Starbucks coffee is overroasted. Thius allows them to use poorer coffee beans. They really aren't in the coffee busines, more like the milk business with all their frapachino's etc. For flaovred, milk based beverages the quality of the coffee isn't so important.

I'll take MacDonald's or 7-11 coffee over Starbucks anyday. Starbucks is highly overrated and overpriced. I prefer my coffee black with no cream or sugar. Starbucks coffee always has a burnt taste and should be called Captain Ahab's bilge water. Could be inferior beans and the reason they have to disguise them with syrups and whipped cream.
Remember the saying: "Friends don't let friends drink Starbucks.

I just returned from a nice tour of major areas in China ... tea is everywhere, really great, delicious tea .. AND ... they have delicious beers. Why drink coffee at all ? The stuff is full of nasty acids that don't help your stomach and it stains your teeth and gums and gives you bad breath all day, plus hypes up your system.
But .. if I had to drink coffee in USA, I do think Mc Donalds has better coffee than Starbucks. Most Starbucks Groupies I know are there because of image .. they tend to believe they are somehow better than others as they sit around and nurse their $4 "special" and talk about the rainforest or global warming. Then they hop in their gas-hog SUV and leave for their long commute to their office job in the city.

I just read the comment about Dunkin Donuts and something changed with them. I can tell you what it is, because I feel the same way. They changed from fresh brewed pots in a lot of stores, to Institutionalized size metal pots. I'm sorry, it's just not the same..not fresh brewed anymore. Who knows how long it sits in there. I used to go to DD almost twice a day and more on weekends. Now, barely once or twice a week...I just make it at home and save a lot of money. I even wrote to the corporated headquarters, but they never personally responded with an answer.

Michael Canfield certainly appears to be a coffee afficionado if the stories he's filed are any indication. I'm surprised with his general unfamiliarity with Tim Horton's coffee. The company website lists 295 locations in the Northeastern US. See if there's one near you (for comparison sake's, you owe it to yourself!): http://www.timhortons.com/
"TeeHo's" ability to brew a consistently excellent cup of coffee has vaulted them to cultural icon status across Canada. When our troops in Afghanistan were asked what they missed most about home, the answer was: Tim Horton's. So the company obliged, and opened an outlet on their base overseas. Their blend of 100% Arabica beans is unparalleled in aroma and flavour. No additives. And they claim that any coffee not served within 20 minutes of brewing is not served. Probably not dificult to live up to their word as I've never been in a store that wasn't filled with customers! No, I'm not an employee, or even a stock holder. Just someone who loves their brew. I can taste it now. Mmmmmm. Lots of friends and family will skip their morning cup at home if there's a TeeHo's on their route!
Cost: about $1.43 (CAD/USD) for a large cup (the American cup is larger). Tim Horton's parent company is Wendy's, so the number of locations in the US will no doubt grow. Initial public stock offering in March 2006 was greeted with much hoopla (THI on New York & Toronto Stock Exchanges).
