I sat next to a guy named "Trent" at my first real job. He took sick days about once a week, and we all laughed about it; but secretly resented him for taking advantage of the rest of us working stiffs, who actually worked every day. And dared not to take sick days for fear our bosses would think badly of us; that we were lazy, or hypochondriacs, or unhealthy.
Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE:WMT) is cracking down on the Trents in its workforce, according to the Wall Street Journal this morning [subscription required]. The company has enacted a new attendance policy. Now, if you have the sniffles, or chronic back pain, or a hangover, or mono, you have to call an 800-number; obtain a code; and give that code to your manager. The system will track sick time and whether or not your absence is authorized; those employees who get too many unauthorized absences will be terminated.
Even more ominous, employees with too many sick days will be encouraged to apply for an unpaid leave of absence. Critics naturally are attacking Wal-Mart from every direction, wondering if the company is trying to shuck the unhealthy workers from its roles. Whether or not this is true, it's certainly an icky process for Wal-Mart to enact, and seems a bad move for a company already under fire for overworking its employees.

i agree with the policy regarding the limitations of "sick days," however the "excused" abscenses are totally bizarre. having family members who work for walmart i have read the policy and one reason that "stuck out" was a bone marrow donation. since when do sick days have to site the specific reason in which the day is being taken off. it could be a child or family member who is sick and in need of care. the situation will never change. sickness is common, and for a corporation with a worforce in the millions im sure the lost production of less than 10 persons per store can be compensated for.

Beleive me folks, this is hardly the only negative anti-associate change Wal Mart has or will be making. Their cruelty to the very people who are the backbone of their company astounds me. Now, if Suzzie's kids get pink eye and the daycare calls for her to come get them, she will get one of the three points allowed. If it takes more than three days before the daycare will take the kids back, Suzzie has to take a leave of absence. This is pure insanity, plain and simple. It's doomed to failure. Believe me, you won't want to be shopping at Wal Mart during flu season because we will all be dragging out sick bodies to work out of fear of getting a point. So plan on a coughing, wheezing, hacking cashier or one that has to hopefully make it to the restroom before they throw up or have a diarreha accident. Lee Scott (CEO) needs to be locked up in a pyschiatric ward and so does the rest of corporate. They want to tell us how to vote now, so I think that corporate should be set up like the government. Lee Scott should not be allowed more than eight years in that spot and then put someone else in there and he should have to go back to a level one job. I love Lee Scott like I love George Bush. Need I say more?

At walmart, when associates are sick ,they have to be out for 2 days in order to get paid for one, even if we have 80 hours of sick time earned so we really have no sick time when you think of it,Sam most be rolling in his grave for the treatment the associates get.

HI. I disagree with what walmart is doing. I have spineal diseases and arthritis. and i can't stand for two hours. I see these poor older door greeters standing on there feet for two hours at a time and i don't see any thing wrong with them haveing a stool. Also i disagree with the call in thing. If i am sick i sure don't want to spread it to the whole store and get every one sick and have all the people in the store sick. I don't think we should have to wear uniforms too. Walmart is starting to be a contraytion camp. Sam Walton is rolling in his grave if he seen what all was really going on in Walmart.I see us stand for long times just sometimes waiting to get a break. No one knows what its like at walmart and now talking about cutting our hours and pay. I am barly making it now. What will we do if they cut our pay and time? We are not rich like the walmart bigies. Hey we need the time and pay to live . I think the point thing is out of hand. I think its wrong when they know that some of the mothers have kids that get sick and they can't take them to a day care. And some of the schools don't want them in school if they are sick either. Hey Walmart WAKE UP>>>>>>>>>

I don't think most of you understand this. I work at walmart and am horrified by the new policy. If an associate is sick, even if he/she has a doctors statement, it is counted as an unexcused absence. This is the first time I have EVER heard of a company not accepting a doctors statement as an excused absence. I was hospitalized last year and was in a drug induced coma for 5 days. While unconcious, under the new policy, I would be fired. There would be no taking it back, I would have lost my job....
thanks for looking out for us walmart

Are these people on salary? If not, who cares! Calling in unannounced is one of the perks to low paying jobs like these. If someone takes to many days, fire'em. This passive aggressive work discipline is disgusting.
Personal life IS more important than work. Sorry, this is true. The guys in it for themselves at the top would of course have you believe otherwise. They laugh at you gullible pawns.
Problems in this country can be attributed to people exhausting their energies at work, leaving no energy for family. Not having the time to raise your children and make your spouse happy is NOT HONORABLE!
I used to feel the way Wal-Mart does, but have since wised up to the BS.
People, who cares what your boss thinks, really. Play the game, but don't live in it. IT ISN'T REAL!

do you realize that if the schools in the area close and you leave from work early to get your child/children that it's unauthorized because according to policy it does not affect the community andnot only do you have to call the 800 # with a confirmation, if you do have to go to the doctor and are sick, regardless of the illness they want to know exactly what you are sick with and it to be stated on the doctors note to be considered for approval, and there is a whole lot of things that are not authorized to be excused if you do take your time away from work to go pay a doctor to see and treat you, so you can go back to work and have it held against you. along with the isuue of doctor/patient confidentiallity this isn't a good thing.

People go to work sick all the time. Why? For the money! I believe this policy was created to weed out the lazy(Employees) and protect the ineffective(Management). Favoritism abounds. Management would like the workers to show up and WORK. So they figure a lazy worker for half the week is better than no worker at all. And those of us who show up and WORK must take up the slack and we are tired of it. So if it takes a company policy to do this, most of us are all for it. No matter what company it is. Walmart is a big company and makes a big target. Todays labor force needs to wake up and smell the time clock! I go to work, get paid a decent wage and have full benefits. I don't drive a Cadillac and live in a mansion as the American Dream dictates. But I am buying my own home and drive a fairly new vehicle. And if I am sick, I can call in without worry of my job. Because I don't do it all the time. Those worried about it have something to be worried about because of their own behavior.
