Retailers have struggled in recent years to appease all faiths and be completely neutral when Christmas-time -- oops, I mean "the holidays" -- comes around. In recent years, some retailers have even been boycotted because they would not use the term "Christmas" in any way, shape or form in advertising, marketing or promotional materials during the November and December shopping season. Instead, they use terms like "holiday" and "cheer" in place of Christmasy terms.Well, strike one against trying to please everyone in the melting pot we call America. The world's largest retailer, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE:WMT), is returning the "Christmas" to Christmas this year. It will employ an "in your face" Christmas message after religious and other groups boycotted retailers last year for taking all Christmas words, phrases and other related material out of the holiday completely.
The word and theme of "Christmas" is picking up steam at other retailers too. Macy's -- the largest U.S. department store chain -- plans to have "Merry Christmas" signs in all departments this year in addition to window displays with Christmas themes and even an "Oh, Christmas Tree" theme at New York's Herald Square.
Will other retailers follow Wal-Mart's lead and re-embrace the theme of "Christmas" this year? On one hand, customers who are of other faiths may be offended, which was the initial cause of a generic holiday theme so many retailers have followed in recent years. On the other hand, a majority of customers spoke up and retailers listened. For better or worse, the majority -- or the mob -- rules in the marketplace.

Catherine, In answer to your comment: We have a wonderful diversity progran at Wal-Mart. As I work around the store I notice the sections and selections put out to attract different cultural and religious groups. As you walk through the stores just listen to the verbal adds on Wal-Mart radio. Maybe it has been a while since you shopped at a Wal-Mart store or maybe it has been a while since you just went CHRISTMAS shopping without being in such a rush that you really didn't notice anything else around you. This is the season to reflect the freedoms that Christ (was born and) died for. Please slow down and remember the real "Reason for the Season". Hint: NOT SHOPPING

I am Jewish but I totally support Wal-Mart's move to put Christmas back in their holiday greetings. 99% of the decorations, sales, etc are for Christmas so why not call it as it is?? It's really dumb to call it "the holidays" when it's really all about Christmas. So to all my Christian friends, I want to wish you all a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Walmart got it right this time. If Walmart sales skyrocket (and I hope they do), it will tell the world that this is a Christian nation!

So Walmart is going to put the "Merry Christmas" back in Christmas--big deal!! This whole thing was brought to a head last year as a media ploy by Fox News to exploit the holiday on the pretense that if one says "Happy Holidays" they must be a liberal and therefore; a bad person. For years, I thought "Happy Holidays" was an easy way of saying "Merry Christmas" & "Happy New Year" together. Little did I know that "Happy Holidays" was a way of appeasing those those Jesusless Jews & their silly little Hannukah thing!! God forbid that a good christian should show any form of tolerance & respect to another religion!! The early christians basically stole a pagan holiday. Christmas was ceated make their religion more palatable to the pagans who worshipped the winter solstice. Oh yeah--for all you good christians out there who celebrate Christmas as a high religious holiday--don't celebrate it with a Christmas Tree--it's part of a pagan ritual that went on long before christianity came to town. One last thing for all of you to think about--Walmart imports roughly 85% of it's products from China--a country that has long history of ruthlessly using abortion as a form of birth control. In many cases the women have no choice. If the Chinese Gov't tells you to have an abortion, they're not fooling around. Merry Christmas everyone!!

Jesus/God will be happy now that you are buying goods made by kids in countries where people are so poor they are enslaved into making Walmart junk for you to give away for your "Cristmas"
Don't kid yourselves you are holier than thou for shopping at Walmart because they use the word Chrismas to lure you in to by cheap junk. You will go to hell for supporting abuse of children that make these goods you keep them enslaved with your greed.
If you really want to have a marry xmas give the money you would spend on gifts to someone in the world that needs it then you will truely be doing something Christian!

Put your hands together for Wal-Mart....They accomplished what they set out to do. They wanted to stand out during the holidays. I myslef celebrate Christmas and I will not make a big deal of saying happy holiday to those who do not celebrate Christmas. Even though the chances of those few probably celebrate Christmas. I hear it all the time..."We're Jewish, but Santa still visits our house" Hmmm, and whst religion did you say you followed?

I have the PERFECT solution....when at the register and the cashier says Happy Holidays, then you say what you approve of...like: Cashier:Happy Holidays Customer: Merry Yule ....and so on. Everyone is different and we should be able to phrase it our own special way without fighting. Come on people and GROW UP!!! By the way... MERRY YULE AND HAPPY NEW YEAR.

We has a huge dept store owned by Jewish people....as we all know, they do not celebrate Christmas....well, most of the year there store is closed on Saturday up until the month of December......this is typical Jewish people. I see that as hypacritical and contradictive. I boycott there store just for this reason.

I am so glad Wal-Mart wised up about Christmas - I think it's horrible you thought about changing it. I'm very upset because you discontinued layaway. My friends and I purchased a lot of items this way, including Christmas gifts. The Worker Scheduling System stinks. That, along with trying to push current employees out so you can hire others for less wages. Wal-Mart grew so big because of it's employee's and customers - WAL-MART - YOU BETTER APPRECIATE US MORE - DON'T CHANGE THINGS. (Customer)

WE REFUSED TO SHOP AT STORES THAT DID NOT USE THE WORD CHRISTMAS IN THEIR ADVERTISING. THAT WAS THE CASE IN STORE OR ON-LINE. OUR MAIN COMPLAINTS WERE BEST BUY AND TARGET. WE HAVNT SHOPPED TARGET SINCE THEY BANNED THE SALVATION ARMY FROM THE FRONT OF THEIR STORES.

I'm glad Wal-Mart changed their policy on this; must have felt some pressure, huh?. Now, if they would only show some good cheer toward their employees. As for any of you immigrants who don't like to hear MERRY CHRISTMAS, TOO BAD! You knew our traditions when you came over; if you don't like it, HIT THE BORDER,PAL!
