When I first read this article from CNN Money.com, regarding the Obama/Edwards tag team against Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE:WMT), my brain yelled, "Huh? What? Who?"
What are two liberal socialist Democrats doing taking potshots at Wal-Mart of all things? Egads, couldn't they even wait until after Christmas before tossing their first '08 presidential campaign grenade?
Illinois senator Barack Obama(D) and former Democratic vice presidential hopeful John Edwards, drew the sword Wednesday along with Wal-Mart watchdog group WakeUpWalMart.com to denounce Wal-mart Corporation regarding the treatment of their employees. The two politicians had to "back door" their appearance by going through the union assembled public group because it is perhaps bad form and too controlled to directly address the union through normal channels. The entire event was obviously exploited by Obama and Edwards in an attempt to gain increased appeal to the minimum wage sector.
I'm not a big fan of Wal-mart, but I don't like this political pawn pushing either. If Obama and Edwards are looking for grassroots brownie points, they've picked a pretty rude way to get them.
I can't remember the last time I actually witnessed the overt attempt by politicians to incite a public riot in order to advance their own agenda. The dialog of Obama was particularly disturbing in the way he voiced the need for Wal-Mart employees to "stand up and fight." These guys have no business stepping into this arena. They're going to take what should be a union-to-corporate discussion and make it a veritable political carnival. Yeah, send in the clowns.I'm hoping that Wal-Mart shareholders are going to make some noise about this. Get your voices raised and remind those two that the union is paid to deal with these issues. If the Obama / Edwards media train wants to take stake in the lives of working Americans, perhaps they need to spend some time leveraging against American steel import tarrifs imposed by the WTO. That would be of more real benefit to our country. Or maybe they could place some demands that the world's laborers be brought up to the standards that we already enjoy. That would actually help some people.
Believe it or not, I'm going to stand firm with Wal-Mart in this one. I'm asking that Wal-Mart, their share holders and Wall Street as a whole stand united in defiance against this shameful and dangerous political ploy. Obama and Edwards need to be sent scampering home with their tails between their legs or we're all in for serious trouble!
But, that's just my opinion.

I agree with the comments. Walmart helps many of the low income folks that the Democrats have in their fold. My long retired parents depend on Walmart for most necessities to help with their reduced incomes. If pretty boy with no real experience John Edwards wants to go after low wage companies there are many more out there that pay less than Wal Mart.

Here we go again... Corporation's good working people bad... why is it ok for politicians to stand up for corporation's but not good for them to stand up for the working people? If not for the workers Corporation's would not make the profit that they make. Unions only make it easier for those workers to have one voice to stand up against there employers and demand some of that profit for the workers that make it for them in the first place. The sad thing is these workers dont make very much so they cant afford to pay for politicians to support them in there endevors. Its people like Obama and Edwards that know this and still stand up for workers.

What is it with these liberal democrats bashing WalMart. WalMart is the greatest example of democracy in this country. It is the "peoples" store. Obviously these liberal senators like Obama and Edwards have made too much money settling accident cases and have lost touch with reality. If they support policies that will have a deletorious effect on Wal Mart operating expenses, to wit, driving up the costs of labor and health insurance, the store will just pass along these costs to us -The people. Its just another great example of the hypocrisy of the left wing democrats...they attack and brand as uniquely evil anyone that seems to be uber successful in this country as having exploited the poor to get to where they are, only to destroy that company financially or have that company pass along their costs to us the people. Such that we will be paying alot more when these idiots are elected for socks and underwear, etc etc, than now. Obviously these liberals do not represent us ...the people

People like Edwards have raised your health care costs while lining their pockets with jury awards. Now they will raise the price of everything you buy. It is very sad that so many voters fall for this type3 of ploy.I

I think Sen.Obama and Sen. Edwards should but out and take a flying leap. They should go after matters that REALLY matter. I work for Walmart and I have nothing but good things to say about them. They are family oriented and a great place to work. Their compensation is competetive with the industry and their competitors.

The reason the Far Left hates Walmart boils down to three things: 1. They are anti-union 2. Walmart execs believe in God and let it affect their decisions 3. Walmart headquarters are in a small town and not a "sophisticated" place like NYC.
Walmart employees are paid more than minimum wage. In most of the small towns they're in I'm familiar with, they actually are one of the better employers. We should be worried about Socialists like Obama trying to get the government involved in stuff like this. I have a strong suspicion that Obama is just trying the Jesse Jackson scam--shake down big companies with threats until they contribute big money to your organization/campaign. Obama is starting to look like a slime ball. As for Edwards, he's just yet another Left Wing elite who is clueless about everyday people. Both are obviously angling for Union special interest money. That's what this is all about.

If they really wanted to help the working people, they should go after all the companies that are closing offices in the US, laying off people and moving out of the country like GM, Dayton Tire, Wrangler, etc! But to bash a company that is expanding in the US and hiring people is wrong! Obama may have just blown his chance at a run for Presidency in 2008. I probably would have voted for him, but known what he's trying to do to Wal-Mart, I definately would reconsider my vote.

How sad, that at a time when most of the world's people are desirous of freedom and its co-conspirator, capitalism, the US seems to be headed toward socialism (government control of every aspect of our lives.) The people have already voted for Walmart by shopping there! Their employees have voted for Walmart by joining long lines to get jobs there! As for unions? There again, the people have spoken, having reduced union membership consistently over the years. Ask Nancy Pelosi(D) new Speaker of the House, why she and her husband do not hire union workers at their businesses - hotel and vineyard - which normally are dominated by unions.

Walmart is an economic toilet bowl slowly eroding the American economy. They should be taxed heavy for their imports from China and that money should be used to supplement the employees income or used to improve their health care.

I remember the last job fair I attend my Senior year in College. For every company I wanted to work for there was some kind of stipulation. With a B.S. Degree that also wanted other schooling along with a B.S. Degree. I am talking about world class companies that you read about in Fortune. Iam a Minority and that did not help at all. WalMart offered me a job. It was very challeging and there was so much knowledge about business practices and marketing that you will never find in a University class room. Trading with overseas markets like China are efficient. There are more skilled workers there on one street corner than you will find in any U.S. City. However WalMart employees are paid higher than the National Average. They are also provided Health Care that is better than the Average coverage, than any U.S. Company. If you there is any company that employs over 2 million people and is successful? You do math and if you continue to listen to the political clowns. Where will you be when its time for you to retire?

I'm very disappointed in Obama from whom I expected better. We all knew what Jesse Jackson is. This is the man who, according to reports, rushed out to the balcony and put King's blood on his shirt to make it appear he had been standing beside him. Yhis is the3 man who placed pressure on companies that forced them into business deals that made Jesse and his friends and family rich. Walmart, don't buy this man off.

Response to Kent in SD. What does believing in God have to do with making corporate decisions? Please don't confuse making money with believing in God. Walmart is in the money making business like all businesses. They are going to do whatever it takes to win. Everytime the minimum wage is about to be raised corporate america crys foul. I would like to see a ratio that ties the top earners in the company to the lowest earners and you will see the minimum wage sky rocket to 20 dollars an hour for the receptionist:), cashiers and any other low wage earner. It is crazy that some people get to absolutely earn money that is obscene then bankrupt a company or drive it to the brink while the less fortunate are left to pick up the pieces.

Obama and Edwards don't like Wal-Mart. This is so typical of liberals: complain about what is....but they do not do something positive about "the problem." Edwards should put his money where his mouth is........get together with his other liberal millionaire friends, and form a company similar to Wal-Mart........and they can pay their help $15/ hour begining salary with full medical benefits and full child care and free transportation to and from work, and feed them at work for free. No work on holidays weekends so workers can spend time with their families. Time off if injured on the job...not modified work....people should not work if they have pain.
Cut the cost of all products...because no profit needs to be made...all of the backers are millionaires anyway.
Come on liberals ... show us how to do it!

It's not just workers. Wal-Mart comes in and drives out all those Mom-and-Pop "small business owners." You know, those people Bush and McCain conveniently say they're SO concerned about when it comes to raising the minimum wage? (Watch your independent pharmacies go that way, too, competing against those $4 drug prices.) It's not a GOOD thing that you shop there because it's what you can afford - and you can thank the neocons for that.

My wife and I shop in Walmart. Upon entering, a disabled greeter welcomes us. A mentally deficient man helps to arrange shopping baskets inside the store. Elderly greeters try to direct customers to various store areas. Upon checking out a young woman, siting in a wheel chair, operates the scanner and cash register and a senior citizen packs the purchased merchandise.
None of these liberal politicians would ever hire some of these unfortunate people. But, Walmart has employed them, provided an income, respectability and has helped to make their unfortunate problems bearable. For that, these liberals can offfer nothing but criticism. Shame on them and their union dictators.

I agree with the comments about Edwards and Obama exploiting Walmart. They should actually investigate the facts about Walmart's treatment of employees. Walmart is a company known since its beginnings to be very employee oriented. They are probably the first and maybe the only company who gave employees shares of its stock and profit sharing as well as a higher salary than most of its competitors. Unions have been trying to organize the Walmart employees for many years without success. It hasn't been happening, because Walmart employees had no reason to go "Union". They had higher pay and better benefits than the Union could get them and that other similar stores would offer them. I once worked for Walmart and I saw it for myself. I believe someone with deep pockets "planted people" in Walmart to instigate trouble and other disgruntled employees who didn't work well for the company, or didn't get a promotion they wanted, or for whatever personal reasons they had, jumped on the bandwagon. I know a couple of managers who went AGAINST COMPANY POLICY in some of the things they asked employees to do. Things they were allowed to do in previous jobs with OTHER COMPANIES, but Walmart didn't allow. Those people, when discovered, were fired. I don't believe for a minute that "THE COMPANY", WALMART mistreats employees in any way. They don't want employees to work off the clock. Some employees, such as Department Managers do it because they are not competent enough to do the work during their regular number of hours. They want to look good for promotions, so they do more than other Dept. Managers can get done in 40 hours. The company doesn't know about it, but other employees see it and report it as something the company REQUIRED THE DEPARTMENT MANAGER TO DO. Some Managers of Stores do the same thing. They do get caught and they do lose their jobs. I don't for a minute believe Walmart would ever condone, or knowingly allow, any of the things they are accused of doing. If there ever was a company which has Honorable, Moral, and Decent people in its Head Offices, it is Walmart. Sam WAlton always said so many ways that he wanted his employees to succeed. They probably have had more non-college educated Managers than any other company and they have made MILLIONAIRES out of many, many hourly employees because of their profit sharing programs. I have seen hourly working floor people, people with less than 10 years service, who left the company with their profit sharing accounts worth more than 70 thousand dollars. I have seem those working longer get proportionaly more. If that is mistreatment, then all workers should have that kind of mistreatment.

Walmart does pay there people poorly and now they have caps. And What's more is they just bought off a bunch of 20 year people that were very conscientious towards culture and what built the company but now you won't see those people say anything because they signed a statement to receive those benefits not to lash out at the company or be sued by the big bad Retailer. I still will not vote for either of those clowns, nor will I support the unions. This Thanksgiving MY FAMILY IS SHOPPING EVERYWHERE BUT WALTON WAL-MART INC. LEE SCOTT THE SHIP IS SAILING AND THERE IS NO ONE AT THE CONTROLS. BUT YOU ARE TO ARROGANT TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR MISGUIDED WAYS......HAVE A GREAT CHRISTMAS SEASON!

My wife pays $260.00 a month for very good health insurance much better than medicare would offer or anything the democrats would come up with. I am 59 and my wife is 57 years old. The same policy with Pacific care was $3000 a month here in Arizona We must remember that the position at Wal- Mart are generally unskilled

I am a shareholder of Wal Mart and very proud to be with a company like them. I have been a Democrat all my life but I think it is a disgrace what Obama and Edwards and several other Democratic Senators are doing against Wal Mart just because they want the Union votes. I will not vote for any of them. You would think they would have enough to do in Washington without running down Wal Mart. A lot of people are losing their respect for the Union because of the way they are treating Wal Mart.Wal Mart should not have to go Union unless other retailers do. They probably pay more than most others. A lot of low income people are now able to afford their medicine because of the $4.00 a month and also buy food. Keep up the good work Wal Mart!
