Virginia citizen group tries to block Wal-Mart store
A citizen's group in Clearbrook, Virginia has decided to try and block the construction of a new Wal-Mart Supercenter. The group, which is calling itself "Citizens for Smart Growth," decided at a meeting last night that they will do their best to keep a Wal-Mart Supercenter out of Clearbrook. In addition, a possible lawsuit may be coming against the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors. Oh, the horror.
Some attorneys tried to get Roanoke County to reconsider the special-use permit and rezoning that will allow the development of a 204,000-square-foot Wal-Mart just south of the Roanoke, Virginia city limits. Sounds like a mild case of arm-twisting perhaps.
A lawyer for the Citizens for Smart Growth said that they must come up with a $10,000 retainer by November 27 -- the lawsuit's deadline. In addition to the retainer, another $40,000 will be needed for the group to continue the fight against the Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE:WMT) development, even if the group prevails in court.
Here's yet another citizen group that's opposed to the re-zoning of a piece of land to make it suitable for the retail construction of a new big-box sprawling complex. Although this is not a new situation for Wal-Mart, the company will be up yet again to try and get a new location underway while concerned citizens fight it at every curve. Gloves please.
