If I Did It, how much would I be worth? That's the question many buyers on eBay and reporters from the Wall Street Journal are asking today. Many listings of If I Did It, OJ Simpson's supposedly hypothetical retelling of the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman, have already been pulled by eBay, Inc. (NASDAQ:EBAY) at News Corporation (NYSE:NWS)'s HarperCollins unit's request. The bids were reportedly in the thousands before the auctions were ended, although many booksellers interviewed by the WSJ said they would put the price of the book closer to $1000 (although they'd only pay $100, buy low, sell high, anyone?). This auction ended at a whopping $8300.Some put the book's price between $2000 and $5000, although everyone seemed to agree that such a price wouldn't be sustainable in the long run.
Instead of beating the First Amendment drum, I'll just riff on a capitalist beat: people obviously want to read the darned thing! My objection would likely be more literary snobbishness than righteous horror -- Judith Regan ain't known for her wordcraft. But if people want to read it so badly they'll pay thousands ...

What happened to free speech. Bush has killed hundreds of thousands and he can get published.

If I did it.......
I would deny it, go on trial for it, be acquitted of it, wait a few years for people not to be having daily discussions about it, write a book that tells all about it, try to sell the book about it, and then have my publicist pull the book off the shelves because I did not do it.
Or did I?

Gilbert - how are OJ's 1st amendment rights being limited? Just as OJ has every right to write about whatever he wants, EBay has every right to not offer his book on their site.
And as much as I hate Bush and as much as I think that the Iraq War was an enormous mistake, to claim that Bush killed hundreds of thousands is absurd....and liberal wingnuts like yourself give logical, liberal-minded people like myself a bad name.

Actually, Gilbert is correct. The President took us to war based on a lie (research that they mostly cooked up themelves) and then tried to connect Saddam to 9/11 which was bs also. Now some 3000 of our men and half a million Iraqi's are dead. Who should we blame for that? On whose shoulders does the responsibility lie?

I didn't supposed that this book would have such great interest among buyers. I didn't know what this book about, but $8300 tells me it's interesting

Well, as a stock holder of ebay I can tell you that I'm just about to give up on them. Why don't they let the people decide what they do and don't want to buy. It seems they want to enforce their own definition of morality on their customers.I listed an air rifle on ebay and it was pulled, but you can buy bows and arrows all day long. Go figure!

Gilbert and Bob are examples of brain-damaged liberal morons who subscribe to the Left Wing slogan committee. Funny how Clinton said the same thing Bush did, yet Bush is wrong. I don't remember Bosnia being a threat to America, yet we are still there. And why was OSama left alone, when Clinton knew who he was as early as 1992? I guess since both of you fools are Liberals, you are allowed to be wrong, as usual. Besides, we know that you love the terrorists, and your cowardness was truly demonstrated in the last election. Bottom line: both of you are sorry pieces of garbage, and maybe one day, you can be the next target of the terrorists.
Let the book be printed. He is confessing, ladies and gentlemen, why stop him?

As applies to eBay and the First Amendment:
They have zero regard for the document as evidenced in the proactive approach they allow Live World to censor the eBay discussion forums.
They also have no particular regard for books or the free flow of information. It should come as no surprise that they pulled OJ's book, probably based on a couple complaints from someone they think actually matters.
If they had any ba##s over there, they'd let the book sell and leave the matter to the court of public opinion.

ebay is a business that has the right to display or pull items as they seem fit. They don't like to have things listed that are controversial. I guess that they feel that free speech does not apply to their business or forums. Too bad. Somehow, I think that our rights to free speech should be enforced since they are engaging in providing an open forum. But, somehow, I don't think that will ever happen. Money talks. They spend a lot of time censoring and deleting items that may "offend" someone even if the majority doesn't mind. A good example is that if you get 200 visits to your auction. Let's say that two people complain that it is offensive. Bang, you're auction is pulled.
Bottomline... Go list it someplace else! There are plenty of places that would probably care less and would LOVE the traffic! Plus, ebay could use some competition to cure their high handedness in some issues.

I wouldn't assume that offering upwards of $8,000 for this thing is about someone who wants to read the book= although that might be true. It may will be from someone who thinks they can get more for it eventually as a collectible since it is a rarity and a historical artifact at this point= or they want publibity for buying it. It's more like the cheese sandwich shaped like Jesus than a literary venture at this point. Buying a cheese sandwicj shaped like Jesus or the virgin Mary doesn't make the buyer religious and a group of people bidding stupidly for this OJ product doesn't mean there is a demand to read it, although there probably is some demand. OJ can tell us what happened and he will have an audience anytime he wants. The issue is whether we want to sanction paying him millions to milk the sensationalism of the trial as he hints he was the murderer. Some people may wish to- but not major corporations who are responsible for influencing the culture.

Well look at all the publicity eBay has got from this move! How much would they earn from this book sale? How much does all that space in newspapers cost if you need to pay? Hmmmmmm.....

This isn't a surprise, though I wouldn't have placed any bets on whether or not they would of pulled it. You never know with Ebay whether they'll do the right thing or not. Last year there were alot of Int'l sellers auctioning off metal parts from launched missiles and other bombs showing how it landed in their houses or yards. 6 months ago Ebay was still allowing that pervert here in the US who'd show up at Football games videotaping high school cheerleaders doing the splits and selling that on ebay. Ebay didn't pull that. In fact there's still sellers peddling this on ebay. I would much rather have have that OJ book run than people profiting from acts of war or video of someones child being exploited for pedophiles

Four days after the publication of this story and the top 10 returns from Google's eBay related newswire stories still include a high percentage of articles relating to this sordid tale. It seems to have provided a great dose of free publicity for the venue.

I wish the author of this blurb would have specified the reason that eBay gave for pulling the books. eBay continues to make rules on the fly with absolutely no regard or the first ammendment or state and federal laws for that matter. For years, their view is "eBay owns the site, we can do what we want." Four years ago eBay was labeled "just a venue" by the executives, but it has devolved into a strict parent at best and a fascist oligarchy at worst.
I mean, c'mon, it's a friggin' book. There is about a million times as much murder and killing and death in the Bible, yet eBay doesn't pull it! Cain killed Abel over jealousy, "if" Simpson committed the murders, it would have been for the same reason.
I believe that the main reason eBay pulls these type of auctions is publicity. It's free advertisement (and just about the only kind the site gets anymore, because God knows Meggy Poo isn't going to splurge on actual commercials). eBay execs know that if they "ban" or "pull" items, it will hit the news - even though anyone working with the site on a daily basis knows that the list of banned and prohibited and regulated items has grown huge. The pulling of these auctions has started to become almost commonplace and prohibiting such items will in the long run have a negative effect on the site. Instead of hearing stories about rare items on eBay, all the general public hears about is items like this book, scams and food with holy images.
