According to Loren Baker of Search Engine Journal, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.'s (NYSE:WMT) website, Walmart.com, crashed earlier this morning. The site had a "scheduled-for-maintenance" page.
I agree with SEL and doubt Wal-Mart has really chosen today of all days for scheduled maintenance (especially since Wal-Mart advertised the site as well). Indeed, Wal-Mart may have substantially greater sales in its physical stores, but I don't think the retailer would willingly forgo the online portion of its retail business on one of the busiest shopping days of the year. Yes, despite Black Friday not being Cyber Monday, it still ranks among the top ten busiest online shopping days.
No, it seems more likely that Wal-Mart servers have crashed under the load, further proving that this is a busy day for online shopping, not just mall and stores raiding. Wal-Mart may have also underestimated its own advertising power, suggesting to shoppers to try Wal-Mart's website.
I've tried the Wal-Mart's site and it is now running, but SEL reports the site has been up and down all morning long. I trust/hope Wal-Mart will fix this soon, and if not, be better prepared for Monday or at least for next year. For now, this is a major glitch.

This is so dissapointing, the annoced we wouldn't have to stand in line we could pre-select items off the web site, and then get up and pay for them. I have tried and not been able too even now to get the items I seleceted. The site keeps crashing at the point of payment. As a share holder I am totally upset with this and the way they are conducting business.

I agree with #1 comment.I am a shareholder also(1981) but I'm beginning to distrust anything Wal-Mart says. If I can't stand the heat I guess I'll get out of the kitchen.Hu

It appears to me that not only it is unforunate for Wal-Mart to experieced a full shopping cart at 11 AM, but I couldn't get to use another credit card as I could even I was in one of their stores. Plus, my AOL service turns into a disappointment the more I try to use it!

I decided to keep hitting refresh for awhile and this is what eventually popped up:
Walmart.com Temporarily Unavailable
Walmart.com is temporarily unavailable due to high traffic volume. We appreciate your patience. Please check back shortly to see our great values.
So, they are truthful if you hit refresh about 15 times! Come on!

The problem can only be traffic, and that's very manageable issue. It's surprising that Wal-Mart didn't have backup plans in place, in case this very thing would happen. This is poor management and short-sighted thinking.

This event, partnered with the dropping of the "layaway" program, is going to put a wrench in this years sales. Wal Mart was created for the benefit of the working family, not to pad the wallets of the CEO. Maybe biting off more than it can handle. Maybe Sam really is pulling a "shame on you" from above, to those in charge.

This is just another reason not to shop at Wal Mart. They don't have a big enough web site to take care of the business. They better wake up or they will lose even more business. They have already have a bad reputation in the business communuty.

The day after Thanksgivings and wal mart sales are down compared to last year. Is it time to replace the management in Bentonville. Stopping layaway and now closing the fabric dept I got a better idea Why not close all the stores. You can save all your expenses that way. Arrogants is a trainwreck waiting to happen Two years ago walmart did no advertising last year you couldn't say MERRY CHRISTMAS in the stores and this year we closed layaway That is three strikes and your out. The management should be looking at a stockholder lawsuit for lack of performance. Maybe the management is from the old k-mart stores. thank you for listening.

As a Wal Mart associate, I will tell you now that one of the scariest sights I've ever seen occurred on the Friday after Thanksgiving (a.k.a. "Blitz Day" or "Black Friday"). No, it wasn't the crowd of people already in the store when I arrived for work at 4am. It was the sight of our parking lot when I went on my "lunch" break at 8am....it was practically empty. It looked more like 8am on a typical Sunday morning, which is one of our few "quiet" times. Plus, when I came back from my break I took a few minutes to walk around the store. There were still plenty of the special items everywhere. Sure, the $300 computers were gone as were the $69 tv's but many of the other items were still there. Then, later in the day, a friend tells me she "just kind of popped in that morning and looked around but didn't buy anything". Her reason? "I've had such a hard time getting checked out on regular days I just knew they couldn't handle it with a crowd like that - I had other places I wanted to go". That sentence was like a punch in the gut. She "just knew" we couldn't get her checked out in a reasonable amount of time based on prior, less crowded times in the store AND she had "other places" to go - meaning we didn't really have anything that interested her. I'm no Harvard MBA but I know this woman is a customer Wal Mart wants: educated, well paid, intelligent, and tolerant. And she saw nothing at Wal Mart of interest to her plus her previous experiences with Wal Mart have been on a decline for about the last 2 years (as her Wal Mart "insider contact" she unloads on me about every little misstep we make). They keep telling us "change is good" but the changes I've seen so far aren't good for the associates OR the customers...they're both leaving in droves. Maybe "changing BACK" might be worth a try.

A FRIEND OF MIND IS A DOOR GREETER A THE LOCAL STORE & SAYS THAT THE POLICY OF NO LAYAWAY HAS SERIOUSLY REDUCED THE AMOUNT OF SALES THERE. THIS STORE IS LOCATED IN A RELATIVELY LOW INCOME AREA. THE KMART ACROSS THE STREET WAS JAMMED ON BLACK FRIDAY, BUT NO LINES AT HIS STORE.

Its not a K-Mart manager we have, its a Target DM. I have worked at Wally World for 6 years. I like my pay and I enjoy what I do. Layaway isn't the problem. The website crashing wasn't the problem either. It's the simple fact that the associates aren't really happy with the up and coming changes. Open work hours are required as of January. Which means if I want to go to school, I won't be scheduled 40 hours!!! Management needs the turn around!!! Maybe Wally World should celebrate Boxing Day.

Why does everyone run to walmart. That is why it crashed everyone was thinking the same way. Try some smaller companies they may have better deals just takes a little more time to look around.
