This post is written as part of AOL Money & Finance's Best & Worst 2006. You can vote for Suze Orman as the most annoying money expert.
For some of us, certain names come more readily to mind than others when a phrase like the "most annoying money expert" is bandied about. For her critics, financial guru Suze Orman is one such name.
Besides being the author of best-selling personal finance books and the host of CNBC's The Suze Orman Show and QVC's Suze Orman's Financial Freedom, Suze (rhymes with doozy, not snooze) has won two daytime Emmy Awards. A pitchwoman par excellence, she has raised millions of dollars for PBS. She's also a Certified Financial Planner who has worked at both Prudential and Merrill Lynch. With well-known catchphrases such as "Truth creates money. Lies destroy it," and "People first, then money, then things," she's a popular columnist and public speaker -- a favorite with Oprah and Larry King.
Orman claims that she does not multitask, which she says leads to mediocrity. While having neither a husband nor children to distract her, Orman also claims to have no personal assistant and no permanent employees -- she's a one woman show.
She has a reputation for offering practical, easy-to-understand, and down-to-earth financial advice that's nonjudgmental towards those who have made poor decisions. But her advice can also verge on New Age mystical. For instance, Orman sometimes asks audience members to rip a dollar bill in half. Most cringe at the idea, which she claims is due to that fact that money has an energy field that other objects don't have, almost as if money were alive.
Besides the more mystical aspects of it, critics also often claim that her advice is too basic for informed or experienced investors, and sometimes contrary to common sense. But despite all that, she has remained popular by tapping into people's insecurities about money and its effect on happiness, relationships, and self-esteem.

Wow - so I am not the only one who is more irritated than inspired by Ms. Orman? I've had the misfortune of hearing her a few times, and remember that instead of feeling educated, enlighted or encouraged, I simply felt like I'd been run over by a verbal truck.
Perhaps that is why Oprah likes her? She seems to enjoy others who also like to interrupt, cut to the chase like their job was an annoying interruption to their day, and otherwise roll forward in a manner that leaves all in their wake washed to the side...
I really have to pass on Ms. Orman's advice or talk/radio programs. She leaves me stone-cold.

Ms. Orman has become a caricature of herself--
Talking to people as if they were 3rd graders is neither good TV nor good communication.

I find Suze informative on occasion. Let's face it, she has a lot of people on her show that really don't have a clue how to handle their money and therefore bury themselves in debt. I only wish my wife would watch her show.

I also find Suze informative at times, if I can get past her overwhelming personality. She seems to be trying too hard. For that reason it is easier to just read her books instead of trying to watch her television show. I also agree that her advice is very basic, which is good for beginners but not if you want to take the next step. Finally, I wish she would change her hairstyle, it has looked the same forever!!

It's thumbs up for Suze! For so many reasons that I do not even attempt to write in this comment, she is doing a real service to all wage earners across the nation. At the bottom lies the proverbial 20% of population that seem to have no idea how to handle the money, many of whom take money issues emotionally, and people like Suze will at least give them a fighting chance. For those in the middle, as in most of us, she reminds us on how the money game is played, and you better believe we need it. And for those who wish to or now have the means to upgrade into the world of deep finance and serious investing, she provides a bridge to carry you over. At this point, I suppose, she will start to find her critics for the most part. No wonder, but most of them probably just sooo irritated with themselves for not doing the same thing.

I'm a Wiccan and consider myself to have very open, fluid views about a great many things. I believe in energy fields. Suze Ormen drives me slightly crazy.
When someone is talking to me about money, I want math. I bought one of Suze's books and when she started talking about how I 'felt' about my money, I put the book down in disgust. Behavior patterns as apply to money falls under psychology; everything else is quantifiable. I don't need to have a good relationship with my money; I need to understand how the stock market, the houseing market and my 401K work.

Her show is great. THe reason she talks to the callers like third graders is because of the situations they have got themselves into. So of the callers have made some horriable mistakes with thier money, that only a third grader could make. She rocks i have followed her advise and now im a home owner at the age of 26!!!

Suze Orman is the real deal. I've heard her speak in person many times. She went out of her way to take questions from the audience and even met with some audience members backstage. Who else does that? In addition, like many other Finance "Experts" on TV, she does not invest a penny in any of the investments that she touts. Her advice is sound, and unfortunately, it's advice that the large majority of Americans (up to their eyeballs in debt) sorely need. Bravo Suze!

I love Suze, she is very entertaining to watch on tv and in person.
I am sad to see that many people see past her great advice and pick on her personality. Who has the best personality anyways??
In my experience, people who judge other people usually live negative lifes.
Unlike you, she made something with her life because she is SMART. Her purpose in life is to educate anyone who will listen, she is sharing her simple street smarts and it doesn't cost me anything to listen to her.
I thank her for educating me, she taught me how to save money, get out of debt and make a will.
What have you done lately??
Please let her be the Suze Orman she wants to be.

Susie's information is Great....I have purchased her books for both of our children...this class is not taught in the High Schools…...I could care less how many friends she has...or if she moves her hands too much....or what her hair style is......those are people who don't want to really hear what she is saying....that is the problem with the U.S. today...too worried about things that don't really matter...
Susie keep talking, some of us are hearing the message..
....I’m a retired Grandmother and concerned about the amount of debt this country has……

Suze is one of gratest host in finance industry. I have a finance education date with her every saturday. I even saved all her shows so I can rewatch in my personal time at home. If my finacial situation in every aspect is so healthy, it's because of her. I think she's doing the American society or the entire world a great favor that should not be forgetten. Go Suze, I am with you.

I enjoy Suze's free financial advises through her TV show. I am well versed in her financial tactics and is well on my way to financial freedom. Years ago, I was paying debts plus interests to creditors and financial services. After watching several episodes of her tv show, (I am still s big fan of her show to date.)and putting her strategies to work, I find myself getting interests paid to me by financial institutions, banks, and Brokerage firms on a monthly basis. I may have been a third grader when I first started watching her show, but now I have a higher degree in money matters and can define interests as follow: Those who knows it earns it, those who don't, PAYS it!. Thank you Suze, and I'll see you on Saturday nights.

re: suze orman
i do agree that she is shrill, however she is aiming her advice at those who do not know how to handle their money at all.
before one can walk one must crawl. her advice is what those who are rich or on their way to being rich follow. it has been done for many years. you may not like how she says it, however ignore the shrillness and consider whether her advice is sound or not.
if you are wealthy, you should know these things by now. if not, read her books. they are sound in their strategies. once you begin them, you will be on your way. i most certainly am.
also read several other financial books by various authors. you will find that they say the same thing as suze does.
