This post is written as part of AOL Money & Finance's Best & Worst 2006. You can vote for Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal to lose all his money, or see the other nominees in this category.
Called by Time magazine the "Warren Buffett of Saudi Arabia," Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal is a member of the Saudi royal family, as well as a Lebanese citizen through his mother. Though he is the nephew of Saudi King Abdullah, he is not in line to rule Saudi Arabia and has largely stayed out of politics. He is an entrepreneur and international investor with a net worth estimated in 2006 at $20 billion, and he is ranked as the eighth richest person in the world by Forbes.
He has made large investments, through his Kingdom Holding Company, in Citicorp (NYSE:C), AOL (NYSE:TWX), Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), Motorola (NYSE:MOT), Rupert Murdoch's Fox News Corp. (NYSE: NWS), and other technology and media companies. His real estate holdings have included stakes in the Four Seasons hotel chain, the Plaza Hotel in New York, the Monte Carlo Grand Hotel in Monaco, and Euro Disney. In 2005 he purchased the Savoy Hotel in London for £250 million.
In 2001 Prince Al-Waleed's donation of $10 million dollars to New York City in the wake of the September 11 World Trade Center attack was rebuffed by Mayor Giuliani. In 2005 he donated $20 million to the Louvre for the construction of a wing to house the museum's vast collection of Islamic art, and another $20 million to Harvard and Georgetown Universities for Islamic studies programs. He has also donated to centers for American studies at universities in the Middle East, such as the American University in Cairo. He is believed to donate more than $100 million annually to charities throughout Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

Why do you say he is not as lovable? Is it because he is Arabian? He donates at least $100 MILLION annually. I would say he is very lovable. He is among the best of the Saudi Royal family. He also fights for womens' rights. He hired the first female pilot in Saudi Arabia.

I think they meant that we don't know enough about him or view him like a teacher like buffet who willing gives his advice to all who will listen. Prince bin Tallul is a great and honorable man but I don't know much about him. I praise him for his efforts in aiding third world countries and voicing his disgust over the mistreatment of africans in darfur.

This man is truly lovable. He made his money by investing in Western capitalism and donates $100 million (per year!) for charitable causes. I'm happy to hear that he has bought major high-end hotel chains and continues to stay out of politics. A real investor who has earned his way. We should learn more about him.

I don't know much about him, but he doesn't sound too bad from this article. Kind of interesting, actually. I like people that donate to causes. He's even trying to donate to the USA. Who says you have to get into politics just because you're rich? Whether it meant to or not, that caption/headline that led to the article was a bit misleading. I wonder if people were eager to vote just seeing the photo and the caption without knowing anything about him. I see they are voting for him to take the fall. It really just makes me want to see if there is more to this guy, whether good or bad.

i think the prince is a godless man who in his heart despises the western civilazation and secretly provides funds to the terrorists

Thought the Prince gives a lot to charity, the article left out that his gift to NYC after 9/11 bore remarks asking for a more 'balanced' view of Middle-East politics on the part of Americans - ie, dilution of US support for Israel. Given the city he was donating it to - with it's large and integral Jewish community - immediately after the city has suffered such a devastating blow struck me as shocking callousness to say the least.
Perhaps the Prince meant well. I applaud his efforts to promote understanding of Islamic cultures in Western nations, and of the US in Islamic countries. But unfortunately that was the first time I ever heard his name, and it left a bad taste in my mouth.

I think people voted him becuase he is Arabian. He donates around the world, and yet still because of his Race and ethnicity. Its a shame people still do not open there eyes and see who is real or not.

I think this man is an example of goodness, i was about to vote for him to take the fall until i read this article. I just learned that i should learn about someone before making any kind of judgement.I honestly was about to vote for the Prince just because he's arab. My apology to you Prince Talal

I don't understand why the Prince is nominated at all. Is it because he is Arabian and asks for a "balanced view" of Arabian affairs and asks the U.S. to keep their noses out of their wars? Hello! He is Arabian and he is only defending what he should be defending. Plus, it looks like he wants a better world by giving to charity and education. And, from what I have read, he seems to be a great man. I certainly will read more about him. He seems very interesting.

Come on people, be fair, its only because he is Arab, we put him down. He is someone all millionaires should look up to. If they give like him, the world would be a better place. The Waltons exploit their employees, and Martha went to jail for fraud, yet you people said they are better than the Price. Where is the justice? America discriminates against Muslims in this country and all over the world. Lets face it.

Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal, seems to be a real humanitarian. He has a gift and have demonstrated a talent that exceeds the average man. Who can invest in time , money and his neighbors around the planet. He is a person who could start from zero today and rebuild his billions. I feel the world would suffer with out Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal. Could you imagine if his investments was controlled by the Wal-Mart family of Waltons? The thought scares me.

I tutored this man in econ and marketing in the late 1970's while he was attending Menlo College in Atherton, CA. I have nothing but good thoughts of him and consider him a shining star in the middle east and the world at large. He is smart and his heart is in the right place.

This man has to take the fall. He is Arab, afterall and that makes him a bad man. Obviously, all of his humanitarian efforts are nothing but a means to exploit the word of Islam and the causes of the jihadists. Plus, he is related to bin Laden, so he must be evil.
Ok, I'm being facitious here, but only to make a point. The prince is goodness and love and everything God had intended His children to be. Allah has certainly blessed him and he uses that blessing to help his fellow man regardless of ethinicity or religion. No way is this man deserving to lose his wealth. At the very lease, the prince deserves a Man of Year award.

The article doesn't give enough information about him to judge if you don't already know much about him. His non-lovability probably comes from the fact that he put strings on his post 9/11 donation. Given the nature of 9/11, and his "strings", it was not unexpected that his donation would be rebuffed. However, just because the man makes charitable donations doesn't mean he's lovable. He appears to be a shrewd business man. Incidently, as for his staying out of politics - that doesn't mean he doesn't support groups which may or may not be terrorist organizations. However, I do think that he does not support Islamic extremists, and is probably more liberal, given his support of women which is unusual in many Islamic cultures, although Saudi and Lebanon are more secular countries and are known for more liberal views towards women in Islam.
We weren't told why he is on the list - if it's because of his heritage, then that's wrong. If it is for some other reason, perhaps the author can enlighten us.

What a moral imbecile Mayor Giuliani was to not have accepted the $100 million offered after 9/11. Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal was not responsible for the atrocities at the WTC, but he felt terrible that ALL arab countries would wind up paying for the acts of a few terrorists with the same nationality. He seems to me to be an admirable man who cares about people despite their ignorant behavior and snubbings. I think he deserves to stay rich because he also seems to be generous.

What?! This gentleman sounds like a true philantropist and from the comments of others, (tutors, critics), he sounds like a man I would like to meet. Race and lack of politically offensive views, doesn't sound like a "stereotypical raving Arab lunatic" to me, a fine example for other people, whether Jewish, Gentile or Muslim. Although I'll never have the privilege or means to meet this person, my hat goes off to him.
