This post is written as part of AOL Money & Finance's Best & Worst 2006. If you think that Tom Cruise makes too much money, cast your vote.
Long-considered one of the big guns in Hollywood, Golden Globe Award-winning actor and producer Tom Cruise is the only actor to have six consecutive $100 million plus blockbusters to his credit.
His acting career began when he was sidelined from the high-school wrestling team by an injury and he auditioned for and won a role in the school production of Guys and Dolls. He became a star after dancing in his underwear in the 1983 film Risky Business, for which he reportedly earned a measly $75,000. After 1986's Top Gun put Cruise in the six-figure salary range, he earned his first Razzie Award nomination for 1988's Cocktail. Critically acclaimed Rain Man, Days of Thunder, and A Few Good Men followed. In 1996 he starred in and produced Mission Impossible, the first in the blockbuster franchise, and earned an Academy Award nomination for his role in Jerry Maguire. Later blockbusters include Minority Report, The Last Samurai, and War of the Worlds (which reportedly earned him $70 million plus a percentage of the profits, as well as more Razzie nominations).
But in recent years his personal life has begun to attract more attention than his film roles, notably Cruise's very public advocacy of Scientology and anti-psychiatry statements, coupled with the tabloid speculation about his romantic relationships. In May 2005, during an interview on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Cruise unexpectedly leaped onto the couch to profess his love for Katie Holmes, an incident that was voted #1 of 2005's Most Surprising Television Moments on a countdown on E!. Economic damage due to Cruise's controversial public behavior and views was cited as one reason for the end of the 14-year relationship between Cruise's production company and Paramount Pictures.
Still, Cruise is Hollywood insider and a consummate deal maker: In November of this year he began a lucrative association with United Artists, and he married Katie Holmes in a castle in Italy in what some in the media dubbed the "Wedding of the Century."

All of you have too much time to be debating the pros and cons of Tom and his newest Bride. He could care less what any of you think, he's made his millions and the rest is a joke. Why do you care?

Tom Cruise is a non-charismatic person. His eyes, His face! Who cares! Take that away from him and what do you have? An overpaid, over-rated, and un- talented bore! He doesn't have personality in my book. There are far better male actors out there that are definetly overlooked. I am not swooned by him.

Hi Bob,
Just what critic site asks for money? I have yet to see one myself. I do see every scientology site selling books and stuff.
Cruise's reilgion is an issue here because he made it one. And if you look real close you will see most the people who have posted are members of scientology. Such as Mr. Lightfield who is proud to have been a member for over 40 years now.
scienotlogy is part of this story. It is why Cruise lost his job at the other studio. And it will affect the new one with UA. As long as scientology keeps having its members post the critics will also. They have that right. Again please list the critic sites that ask for money, i would really love to see if thats true or not.

OK, I admit, I thought he was really cute in "Risky Business" and very sexy in "Top Gun". Of course, both were pretty good story lines and had good cast members (and directors, producers, etc. ).
But "RAIN MAN" - the BEST. Who can forget Dustin's performance in that. Consider this: if you replaced Dustin in that movie with another actor (say Adam Sandler, for instance), would "Rain Man" have been so spectacular? Cruise had nothing to do with it.
And, personally, Cruise was mediocre in "Jerry Maguire", "Mission Impossible"s, "A Few Good Men" (his co-stars carried the movie), along with every other movie he's been involved in.
OK, so he must have been excited with all the buzz about his movies - nominations, and all (the money), but he never acted so badly as he has in the past year. Couches should not be jumped upon, and MATT LAUER (NOR ANY INTERVIEWER) should be talked at or upon in the manner in which Cruise did. Shame on him!! And kudos to Matt for setting an example of professionalism that Cruise should follow.
Granted, Lauer knew he had a scoop on his hands, but contained himself, nonetheless, despite the personal attacks from Cruise. Cruise, HOWEVER, could not behave professionally and made a disagreement turn ino an outrageous and unprofessional personal bashing.
I will NEVER spend another penny on Tom Cruise. (God bless the naive Katie).

To Angel, #21: With all my heart, I hope you do not forgive Osama bin Laden or the likes of him for their behavior, especially use of celebrity, power and religious beliefs because they've made thier money off the rest of us!!!!?????!!!! If so, may War of the Worlds, Part X, obliterate us all now.
Tsk, tsk. Think outside the box, will you.

Bob Tabert, i normally would agree with you--that what people choose from cars, to lifestyles is their own business and yes, basically--who cares?
But, and this is a rather big but-- I don't read the tabloids at all, and don't care either what company Cruise works for or with whom he is married.
However, I feel he is a phoney--and worse--an arrogant one.
No, I certainly do not think it is my business what religion he has committed to--but, again--Scientology *is* dangerous.I was personally wary of them for years, --and this was only after having taken a free psychological test they gave to the public in their recruiting of prospective members when I was all of 18.
I didn't know the difference between them and any other group/trend/philosophy at the time, but I soon found out.
Scientology is more like a cult.
But again--that is his business not mine.
And, I believe he actually is an excellent actor.
However, he also shows off to an extreme- not only extragavantly, but imo--tastelessly.
I don't believe he and this new wife are in love.
I won't comment on whether he is gay, and don't think that is my business either.
But, he's been rude and arrogant a number of times.
It is *not* simply a matter of some silly remark, or behavior.
It is very true that those of us who are not celebrities do not get hounded and photographed relentlessly as he does, and I'm grateful for that, as someone else said..
But, that's not the point here.
Antics and silliness is one thing.
Arrogance, and obnoxious behavior(re: his remarks, and diatribe about the use of antidepressants) is another!

Here, here Bob Tabert! The real problem is that people today have made "celebrity" their true "God." They worship celebrities and when one has his or her own differences from what they deem "proper" they have the "fall from grace." Celebrities are like the rest of us, human beings with their own flaws and positive attributes. The question is not whether they look good to you; whether they "act"/perform well; or whether you agree or disagree with their religious beliefs. The question is whether they deserve to be paid such high salaries. I think ALL celebrities are paid too much, just as politicians are. The people who should really be paid better are the teachers, the police, the firefighters and all those who are in positions to help the average "Joe". However, I'm a realist and know that people ARE what they are and they are going to continue "worshipping" celebrities no matter what and celebrities are going to continue receiving outrageous salaries because the "standard" has been set. It's just a fact of life, so "build a bridge and get over it!!!"

Scientology is a very interesting approach to religion, I checked it out myself, quite interesting.
It is like a breath of fresh air after solemnity of catholic approach.

Goodness, if all people have to worry about is celebrities religion and how they show their love for another I feel sorry for them. Personally I would be embarrassed if my husband were to jump on a couch declaring his love for me on national T.V., but at the same time I would be flattered. As for his religion, each person has their choice of religion, or no religion, why do people feel it necessary to blast someone of another religion then their own? And no, I am not a Scientoligist, but a steadfast Lutheran. This country was based on freedon of religion and freedom of speech. As long as it doesn't hurt anyone, I have no problem with it. No person, religion, race, or sex is better then another. My advice for all those girls that want to follow a religion based on who is a member, research it and decide for yourself it it is right for YOU.

Tom Cruises' religion has nothing to do with the fact that every good movie of his has someone of a "superstar quality" in it. Take for example "A Few Good Men"--Jack Nicholsen......."The Color of Money"--Paul Newman

I have read the preceding comments with interest. Personally, I have never been a big fan of Tom Cruise; therefore, I am sure that colors my thoughts to some degree concerning his words and actions in this discussion. Also, I do not believe that ANY actor should be paid such an outrageous salary for ONE film.
I am a fan of science fiction and I have read most of Ron Hubbard's writings. In my opinion, in his later years his writing became strange, weird and bizarre. This includes Scientology which I do not see as a religion. Others see it as a religion which is their right; however, Tom Cruise has done his religion no good by his words and actions.
I have a few comments concerning some of the earlier postings. To #19 - allankay: Please abstain from making snide remarks about another poster's English. It is most uncivil to do so. If you must do so, you should be sure that your posting is correct. In your post, english should be capitalized and it is not proper "grammer" but should be proper grammar. I will give you the benefit of the doubt on "thye" and assume that it is a typographical error. To #31 - Ambur Smith: You wrote, "This country was based on freedom of religion and freedom of speech. As long as it doesn't hurt anyone, I have no problem with it." I agree with you; however, do you feel that Brook Shields was not hurt by his rant against her ON NATIONAL TELEVISION. Mr. Cruise has never had postpartum depression and has apparently never been around a female who is experiencing it. He has no right to try to impose his "religious" belief on anyone else - particularly when it concerns their health. I no longer have any respect for Mr. Cruise.
