The admission of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE:WMT) on Monday that it had "found" a new hidden cache of the hot holiday gift item T.M.X Elmo (tickle me xtreme?) caused massive hysteria this week and a flood of customers who had tried to get an Elmo for months. It seemed that, suddenly, everybody wanted to buy one of the T.M.X Elmo dolls from the newly discovered quantity Wal-Mart announced. This pent-up demand and subsequent website traffic actually brought the website of the nation's biggest retailer to its knees yesterday. Walmart.com was down for a brief period during the day. With Wal-Mart announcing that it would make the new cache of Elmo dolls available at noon (EST) every day until just before Christmas, that was just asking for the equivalent of a huge line outside the store and mass pushing and shoving when the doors actually opened. In fact, in this case, shoppers all got caught in the entry door and nobody could actually get it. Is that picture being painted good enough?
Well, what's surprising here is that the world's largest retailer apparently can't anticipate web traffic to the level it needs to, even with its IT resources. Remember that on Black Friday, Wal-Mart's website was down for almost 10 hours due to a still-undetermined technical issue (most likely), with 5am web visitors seeing a "closed for maintenance" sign upon trying to access www.walmart.com.

FYI- Wal-Mart sent me an e-mail stating they should have said site was busy rather than saying "Scheduled Maintenanace being done" At least they apologized which is a step forward for them.Maybe they are getting more "humble" since getting all the negative press lately. In closing may I say FIRE LEE SCOTT AND THE BOARD!!

This whole thing is a scam. I had one in the "cart" and went to check out and the site bombed. Today, it was already in my cart so I kept pressing check out and the same thing happened. This whole thing is just to drive up web sales for the company and is a hoax. I feel WalMart should admit the scam. As for me this has made me so mad I refuse to shop there any more.

I agree that this is a scam - Walmart needs to admit that this was a poorly devised attempt to draw business - of course, the damage is already done - I can't shop in a store that does something this low down and dirty to its customers!

Walmart flat out lied. I was on-line at their site everyday this week long before noon. Had my cart ready and at no time was TMX available. Today was the same. I was prepared and had my purchase in the cart at 11:40. Attempted to purchase at exactly noon and unable. I don't mind not being able to get something I want but I cannot tolerate liars.

I have to agree with the people above. I tried and tried and have had many friends doing it also and no one can get any further than the in cart part.
Wal-Mart please just tell the truth. It is hard for comsumers to think they have a chance at something and they really do not.

I completely agree with the above mentioned comments ... I too, had TMX Elmo in my cart and tried 2 days in a row to checkout, only to be kicked out. Then it said my cart was empty. If WalMart lied to the consumers, they should be ashamed of themselves .... hopefully our local news will do a followup, since it announced the supposed 4,000/day til 12/15/06.

Seems like Walmart is having serious technical problems, but it's not a scam - I was able to get through the checkout process with a TMX Elmo today. I tried yesterday and when I got to the end of the checkout process it told me they were out of stock. Today I went back to the website and it was still in my cart from yesterday. I refreshed my cart around 11:50 am (just in case they decided to release them early) and it showed Elmo as available. I went through the checkout with no problems, and am assuming that since I got a confirmation email everything is okay.

This must be a scam. I tried both Wednesday & today with no luck. I too had the item in cart and ready to go and could not proceed to checkout. I even saw the "In Stock" message appear at 11:53 instead of 12:00noon. In my opinion Wal-Mart was not prepared for the amount of traffic they received on their website. It was very disappointing.

Wednesday, I got it in my cart and it still showed in stock until checkout. It paused and then said it just went out of stock. Today, I was ready. Logged in and ready to checkout since it was in my cart. It never came "in stock" from noon to 12:10. I then see they changed their comment about releasing it noon each day to throughout the day. To me this is false advertising. I will file a complaint with the Ohio Attorny General. What they did today in changing the times is like putting out a flyer for a store sale like a big screen tv for $99 for 6am-10am Saturday Only, then on Saturday telling people they have none and will sell them next week sometime. They wasted 20 minutes of my time today, they won't be getting any of my money anytime soon.

I actually had the same problem as above. Yesterday I had it in my cart and kept getting kicked back to the previous page until I finally got to the credit call screen. Then it said they were all sold out. However it was still in my cart and when I got on just to check the site at 11:40 a.m. it said it was in stock, so I proceeded to check out and all went through with no problem. Expected delivery date 12/19. I guess I must have lucked out.

I acquired 6 of them yesterday from ebay at an average cost of less than $50 each, shipping/handling included. And in less than one hour of sitting at my computer.
Granted, they aren't actually in my hands yet, but having bought them on ebay amd paid via paypal, I expect to have them all soon.
