It is always interesting to see the responses that Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE:WMT) evokes in some groups as they oppose the latest move from the world's largest retailer. Wal-Mart's tepid responses are equally interesting. Well, this time, the WakeUpWalMart.com group is using a new television ad that actually shows a church a pastor asking, "Would Jesus shop at Wal-Mart? Should you?"
The ad ought to get a few folks foaming at the mouth, I would think. Along with that ad is a letter to Wal-Mart CEO, Lee Scott, that is signed by more than 130 clergy members. In the letter, Wal-Mart is asked to provide a "higher standard for its employees and their families."
WakeUpWalmart's attempt here is clear. It is using one of Wal-Mart's internal values, conservatism, against it by practicing what the retailer holds as a high internal value and principle. In fact, the letter says that upping the stewardship for Wal-Mart employees would reflect "the best of Christian values." One of the pastors in the ad says "can we continue to shop at Wal-Mart without insulting God?" while also stating that half the company's 1.3 million U.S. employees aren't covered under the company's health plan.
And Wal-Mart's response? Well, it needs to be louder and more vocal than just stating that the union-backed WakeUpWalmart group is attacking the retail giant while Wal-Mart is actually creating jobs. Not a very direct answer to the allegations -- which is what Wal-Mart needs. Really, what is the company afraid of?

It has amazed me in the past when Wal-Mart has received awards from Christian religious groups for their values and moral positions. It appears that these groups may be set to ask more appropriate questions before singing praises for Wal-Mart.
As I recall, a few years ago they received an award from some Christian group based on their "moral" decision to either remove or not to carry certain magazines or books. At the same time, Wal-Mart failed to provide health care for an enormous part of their workforce, paid low wages, again, to large portion of their work force, took unreasonable and unconscionable positions toward their workers who had been injured in the workplace. To top it all off, with their emphasis on store revenue and rare closings, they prevented employees from celebrating some holidays with their families and THEY PRECLUDED THEIR WORKERS FROM ATTENDING SUNDAY CHRISTIAN WORSHIP SERVICES.
Is it not time to question the family, religious and patriotic values this giant actually represents? Many Wal-Mart employees have families, families that need time to be together to establish values and customs.
I wonder how the "Dollar is God," current course of Wal-Mart's management reflects on the views, ideals or values of either Sam Walton or the State of Arkansas.

Let me tell you about preachers as it relates to Wal-Mart.My Dad ran a small grocery store all my life and only one (1) of his pastors ever shopped with him but rather went to Safeway or Piggly Wiggly in our small town of Henderson,Tex. Our little church ran about 125 people of average income and my father tithed faithfully. Probably some of these "WakeupWalmart" preachers will sneek to buy from Wal-Mart if I'm any judge of "preachers" because they are so tight with their own money. Think about it.

This is about one of the dumbest things I have ever heard of. "UNBELIVABLY STUPID"
You would think there would be better things to bloq.
And I will bet that Jesus has in fact been in a WalMart store but he is probably right, He didn't buy anything.

Just reading the name WALMART makes one think of China. First big dip in the market in the future will send WALMART stock lower and lower. WALMART has a store fullof junk from China and one day the chickens will come home to roost. WALMART SUCKS.

I am sure that Jesus would love to over-pay and get ripped off, so that he could feel good about himself. I am even sure that he would want to have tithes and offerings go to buy as little as possible at the neighborhood overpriced shop, so that the Unions would be able to pay for the blogging campaign against against the thrifty stores.
How dare Walmart give us lower prices so that we might be able to provide better for our families! It is shameful!

I'm gonna just make a point here. I don't say if Walmart or Wake up Walmart are right or wrong. But if anyone of any faith is gonna call their Diety down to make public judgement or even just as a advertising gimmik they better be in condition to do that.
Dear God, please bring those 130 pastors to the condition in their minds, hearts and souls where they are honestly capable of judging Walmart. In Jesus name, Amen.
There, that should do it.

Why must religion, G-d or Jesus be brought into everything?? Can't things be just for what they are? I may not be a religious person, but I AM someone who does have faith. I BELIEVE in being a good person & treating someone the way I want to be treated. I HAVE high morals (always have)and I DON'T have to be religious to have them!
Wal-mart (and all other retail) should be commended or repremanded on themselves alone....not the religious beliefs!

I don't think these 130 preachers are christians or they would not be trying to destroy a commpany like Wal Mart because of lies that the union has started. Who was the first ones to help the Katrina people, it was Wal Mart! They also give millions of dollars to communities and charities every year. The unions are not concerned about the employees, they just want the dues and control and I can not understand why people don't see that. Now they have got preachers and senators spreading their lies. Why don't people check around and see what other retailers pay and ask about their health insurance. They will find out that Wal Mart is not so bad after all. I think Jesus would be happy to shop at Wal Mart!

I have been ambivelent about Wal Mart to this point. But now that theunions are attacking we will shop there more and as much as we can. Unions are a tired group of failing socialists who can't orginize Wal Mart so they must destroy it.Now the godless communists are using God to try and ruin a company...next time you vote for a democrat remember this. Wal Mart should pay for decertification elections in many union shops let the commies spend time trying to keep communism alive.

I'm always surprised at the people who want to slam Wal-Mart and why they do it. Wal-Mart is in business to make money, just like every other business. Do any of you who have poor opinions of Wal-Mart know anyone who works there and not just as a transition job? I do, I know plenty for over 25 years now. And I will tell you this, they do not pay low wages. Those people that are skilled, they pay them, I know this for a fact. Now, if you are in high school, or you have no college education, why should you get paid as much as everyone else? YOu should not. They pay you for your skills, just like every other business. And as far as the health care issue. People that work there chose to work there. If they don't like the benefits plan then they can go work somewhere else. I don't think that we should be sticking our noses into other people's lives this way. For me, the benefits might not be that great, and if that is a priority to me, I would not work there. But obviously the people who work there are OK with it. Why should outside people tell Wal-Mart how to run their business? It is quite apparent they know what they're doing. Give them a break ya'll. They give plenty to the communities they are in, they did help Katrina victims, they donate in my area to cancer and other causes, they give scholarships out the but every year. I am a business owner, and I don't do any of those things. Many businesses don't. Let's get a life because I think if you had a life of your own, you would stop with all of this drama.

Senator Edwards claims to be a christian but if he was, he would not be trying to destroy Wal Mart. He has made millions of dollars suing companies so he doesn't care about the poor or middle income people. He is in good with the union because of the money they are giving him. He thinks it will help him get elected but I hope it backfires. I hope everyone that likes Wal Mart will let it be known and not vote for any of these Senators that are running it down. If my preacher was talking against any business, I would change churches. I think Jesus would be very proud to shop at Wal Mart and proud that they are giving over a million people jobs. If the unions destroy Wal Mart, they will ruin our whole economy. Just think about what that would do!

I think Christians need to shut up and go away. All they do is whimper and whine about "moral values", other peoples sins, and "What would Jesus Do". I'll tell you one thing he would do. He'd find something better to do with his time sit around worrying about Wal-Mart. You people really need a hobby.

Riduculous...everyone should know that there were no WalMarts when Jesus was alive. Anyhow, I would be willing to bet that if Jesus were alive today, he would not be shopping at WalMart...or Target, or Kmart, or any of these types of stores; unless, of course the stores would accept sheep as currency. He didn't even have a job, did he? Did he have any money? I would also bet that WalMart would be more than happy to hire him and allow him to work at a WalMart even if he did not choose to enroll in their health program...which I doubt he would (you know, the miracle thing). Besides, maybe Mary Magdalene or someone already would have him covered under her plan.

I just want to say a BIG THANK YOU to WAKE UP WAL-MART! The "Would Jesus shop at Wal-Mart" campaign ad is EXACTLY what the public needed see. The public, including me, who hadn't deeply considered the ramifications of shopping at Wal-Mart, but who began to subconciously choose K-Mart instead of Wal-Mart because of a steady stream of negative press against Wal-Mart, can now make an educated decision to shop at Wal-Mart all the more!!!! This ad clearly demonstrates that the Unions are in a flaming rage because they have not been able to have a piece of this American pie. Groups who are trying to get into people's pockets under the guise of helping others is disgusting! This ad confirms that those behind tihs ad are IDIOTS. I now feel absolutely justified leaving K-Mart and Target alone (after all - what's Christmas without the Bell Ringers collecting for those in need?) I will now deliberately shop at Wal-Mart at every oportunity! Again, I am thankful for this campaign. Instead of waking up Wal-mart, you have "Awaken America TO YOUR THUG ACTIVITIES!!!!"

It comes down to this -- businesses pay people according to the value they provide an organization. You don't deserve to make great money and have great benefits if you don't have a high level of intelligence and skill.
People aren't paid based on their NEEDS or WANTS. They are paid based on performance and value.
If they want more money or better benefits -- then they should quit and work somewhere else.
No one is holding a gun to anyones head and forcing them to work at Wal-Mart.
As far as I can see -- what this campaign is advocating is socialism or maybe even down right communism. It's disgraceful - un-american, and appalling.
Trust me -- when it comes right down to it -- all these class action lawsuits and campaigns against Wal-Mart will hurt consumers and benefit Lawyers (read Thieves) and Church Officials (read Hypocritical Thieves).
