Apple loses iPhone name, what comes next?
As reported by Melly Alazraki here at BloggingStocks yesterday, the Apple Computer, Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone was scooped by Linksys! Bloggers and rumor sites had all but resigned the world to the fact that the Apple iPod/cellphone would be called the iPhone, and yesterday's bombshell announcement that Linksys will have an iPhone that uses wireless networks to do VOIP sends everyone worrying about what will happen next from Apple.
ZDNet thinks that Apple may be gearing up for an iPhone trademark battle, as Apple rushed to file for the iPhone trademark in Eastern markets. ZDNet cites more evidence that this may be the case. A battle like that would bring a great deal of publicity to both camps and their products.
This might deter some investors who are with Apple solely for the iPod surge, but it still looks likely that some hardware will still come out. What is likely is that Apple will have to do a last minute name change. But what will that be? The iCellphone? The iCell? What do you think Apple will name it?

It can't be iChat. That's the name of their IM software.
iTalk doesn't cut it either. iMobile? That could mean anything!
It's probably something along the lines of some cool new word...like "iDef"
Think about the name "iPod". What does "Pod" mean? Nothing! But it's cool now!

iTalk is really good. I agree it's better than iphone.
Maybe Linsky did them a favour by scooping iPhone.

If Apple just comes out with a traditional cell phone they will be killed in the market. We do not need another cell phone company with an 80% saturation rate in the market already. So the focus should be on overall conectivity, not on a "phone". Their product should be based on total connectivity which includes internet, VOIP (internet phone), texting, music, email, video, etc. Lots of options exist, but maybe building on the iPod name would be better than starting a new "brand". However, they could turn the table on Linksys and call it iLink.

iMobile would be the best name because it would be a moble device for communication, media, music, messaging; and "Mobile me" would work great as its tag
iMobile - MOBILE ME
--That would create a dazzling marketing campaign -- much better than iPhone - and would work well with Apple's other "i" products - iPod, iLife, iChat -- iMobile - far superior to iPhone

Hopefully Apple is thinking way beyond a phone, so I'm thinking of names which would insinuate broader and (or) universal communication and interface abilities, such as iBeam, iSpeak, iBridge, iLink, or my favorite, iPath... would provide huge advertising opportunity.
Thanks for listening.

I still like iPod Mobile. Leverages the established brand and doesn't sound stupid. I never really cared for iPhone anyway.

I can't leave this one alone...
How about "iRoad," if we stay on the "i," path, or introducing a grander collaborative opportunity, through the introduction of "we,"... such as "wePod."
Thanks for listening.
