Pizza chain to accept Mexican pesos
In some pie-crazed parts of the world -- in this case, Dallas -- the competition for business can get so fierce, some chains will do just about anything to get your money. Even if that money is, well, pesos.
On Monday, Pizza Patron (with 59 stores spread across Texas, Arizona, California, Nevada and Colorado) began a two-month trial period in which they will accept Mexican currency at 12 per U.S. dollar (the current rate being approximately 11 to 1) to honor their Hispanic patrons and to make sure that no one -- no matter who they are or what they have in their pockets -- has to go without a large 15" or half 11" pizza (which appears to be the only things they offer on their menu). Hmm.
And while the news orgs will apply such obvious tags as the "growing Hispanic influence" and the "stifling immigration problem" -- because, believe me, all the major networks are covering this -- the real issue, I think, is whether or not a reactionary fallout will occurr. Will McDonald's (NYSE: MCD) start accepting all those impossible-to-exchange Scottish pounds? Will Burger King (NYSE: BKC) take those German marks left over from your backpacking trip through Europe?
The answer is, most likely, "nein."

If a fallout does occur, it will be less than educated. Businesses along the border with Canada often take Canadian currency. Canadian businesses take US currency, even in large cities away from the US border. I live in Halifax, a 12 hour drive from Maine and it's very common to have a posted US exchange rate (at a slight markup from the open market) at the grocery, liquor store, fast food chains, The Gap, etc. Go shopping in any U.S. border town in the north, they'll take your Canadian dollar with a smile.
Traditionally, the only barrier to acceptance of US currency has been its perceived instability, which still exists but is far less volatile than in the past. Frankly, given that electronic cash registers can instantly convert at any rate two parties can agree on, and banks can easily convert currencies without large amounts of overhead, it surprises me that so many US businesses remain so jingoistic about their native unit of trade.

This is a perfectly good time for the Immagration agents to stake out this pizza chain to capture illegals that have made it so far up into the U.S. because anyone legally vacationing in the U.S. would have figured out that nobody else accepts pesos and would have exchanged their money for U.S dollars.

Mr Antonio Swad, the founder worked his way up in the restaurant business since he was 16 years old. His rise to his current level can only be attributed to hard work, in a country that rewards same.
He is truly an "American Dream" story.
How Quickly HE FORGETS this, and INSULTS the country that created the environment for his success.
This is a slap in the face to America, and, in response to an above post - I do not care about a very few businesses in the US taking Canadian dollars, since they are parked directly on the US-Canada border....that is not the point. This chain operates in Colorado, N. Texas, etc., and the President of their company is a rich man that has lived the American Dream....Shame on you Antonio Swad.

I do not understand why anyone would get worked up over this. Mexican, Bahamian, and Cayman businesses accept the dollar why should anyone care if a Pizza chain accepts the Peso. I could understand if they no longer accept dollars, but that is not what is going to happen. BTW, most illegals get paid in dollars so I believe they are trying to attract Mexican tourists which is good for the US economy.

If 12 pesos equals a dollar, so what if somebody uses 12 pesos instead of one dollar? You're still bringing money into the local economy. It gives people another option to pay for goods when they might not have U.S. currency on them. I've used U.S. money in Canada a few times with no problem (except that the exchange rate wasn't as good). I don't see the big deal. They can barter tacos for pizza for all I care.

Businesses accept credit cards, and even checks that sometimes bounce and they end up with nothing. Currency is simply a way to make barter and trade easier. A business owner can accept anything they want in trade for the products they sell. If I own a pizza store, and you offer to pay me for a pizza with a CD, and I agree... it's a deal. If this guy wants to accept pesos for his pizzas, it's no big deal. He's getting way more free advertising than he could ever afford to buy, and the amount of pesos he actually receives for his pizzas will probably be next to nothing. Clever man. If he had said he would accept fishing lures in exchange for his pizzas, nobody would care. It is almost laughable at the attacks against this clever businessman.

Excuse me, folks. We're not being invaded by millions of poor illegal immigrants from CANADA. We're also not printing everything of bilingual English/French. We have Mexican banks here in Houston that I can't use, because it's all in Spanish. You folks up on the U.S. side of the Canadian border have complete French Canadian banks only?

I now live in Texas and when I heard this story I was outraged. However, thinking back to my younger years when I lived in Montana, the merchants in Great Falls readily accepted Canadian money for purchases. I don't know if that practice is still ongoing but there really isn't any difference. I still think if you are in the United States you should pay with American money.

This is the U.S. and I am tired of pandering to the Mexicans...accepting their currency, push 1 for English, printing everything in English/Spanish, etc. Check and see who is receiving the most welfare in these border towns and wherever they have a high Mexican population.....and it is MEXICAN! We have to stop somewhere and this man is not a clever business man, he is plain greedy. Isn't that discriminating that his manager's must be bi-lingual?

Have any of you ever been to Europe? Well, in case many of you aren't aware Europe does not boarder the United States in anyway; yet, every country in Europe and every city in those countries and pretty much every single business in those cites EXCEPTS the American dollar. All of you who think you can capture illegal aliens and see business that except foreign currency as a threat to the United States need to dig yourselves out of your holes and educate yourselves. Stop being so ignorant.

I could understand everyone's point of view. Though, what really bothers me, is that the majority of blogger's that have strong opinions, have bad grammer. Every American should strive to be a successful American, one who is educated and career oriented. I wish you all the best and enjoy your day as an American.
