With Apple Computer Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) unveiling today at the MacWorld conference in San Francisco what is unquestionably a revolutionary communications and entertainment device -- the iPhone -- this product will probably be spinning the CEOs of companies from Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT) to Research in Motion Ltd. (NASDAQ:RIMM) to Nokia Corp. (NYSE:NOK) into a deep and jealous madness. But nobody will be shivering quite like RIM's CEO, Jim Balsillie.
Apple's iPhone -- covered in perfect detail by our sister site Engadget -- looks to be a one-button mobile phone with a built-in full web browser, iPod and push email capabilities that equal RIM's push email. You know, the feature that RIM built its business on?
While the details are still brand new as of right now, it will be interesting to see if the business user community starts looking at the newer Apple iPhone device as a way to get past RIM's fees and products. It will also be interesting to see if Apple can manage to sell (like crazy, most likely) this iPhone to both the consumer and business-class user as the feature set that will no doubt appeal heavily to both.
More details to follow -- AAPL shares are up over $92 as I write this -- a rise of 8% just this afternoon alone.

Bulls eye. I had the same thougths. As it's stated at their web page, Apple has reinvented the phone. In 2 years, we'll see the real impact that all of this is bringing to the connected world.
Hope those guys at Nokia, Motorola, RIMM and Palm can sleep tonight, but wait, there is a way to seek cover : BUY some APPL stock :-) And Microsoft, you're taking dust selling OS and desktop suites, oh those boring products and many promises by BillG that have failed to capture the consumers' mind.

Question is what networks will the new phones work on. Sounds great and if the wireless world is switching eventually to some form of cdma, should be great for qualcomm too. They get royalties on every handset made using their patents no matter what network the phones are made for.I was waiting for a phone that had more to offer and the increased memory and better camera sounds like this is it.

The Apple iPhone is a GSM based quad band device. GSM is used in more than 74% of the markets across the globe, users of tri-band or quad-band handsets can travel to Europe, South America, the Middel East exceot for Iraq (the US liberators of Iraq tore down the system built by a Bahrain company and replaced it with cdma installed by a US company), India, and most of Asia and still use their cell phones. CDMA offers no multiband capability.
