We've been seeing and listening to a lot of bad press about Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) for quite some time now. We've watched it toss out two major advertising firms without much explanation. We've watched it cut its margins in electronics and pharmaceuticals. We've watched its same store sales numbers flounder. We've seen it endure public relations assaults from the union and from political loud-mouths. It seems that an unending stream of bad news surrounds Wal-Mart. No one seems to have come to its rescue. Excuse me for being so bold, but someone must be doing something wrong.
What is required to get the good ship Wal-Mart back on course and up to full steam again? Ask around and you'll get precious few good answers. Have the folks in charge over there become so engrossed in stamping out their little brush fires that they've forgotten they have a business to successfully run? Hey Wal-Mart, I'll give you a hint: The best advertising agency in the world isn't going to save your asses if you continue being stupid about what you're doing. Your two big strategies of building new stores and trumpeting price roll backs have played out, folks. It's time to put your thinking caps on. Let me get the ball rolling for you.
Imagine an advertising campaign centered around the statement: Wal-Mart has created the most comprehensive and affordable health care plan ever offered to retail employees. Let your detractors get a hold of that! Yeah, it would cost you some money but it would put you in the drivers seat on the issue. Every other major retail chain would be put on the defensive. They'd be running willy-nilly trying to match what you have done. You would be in a position to point at your competition and ask why they don't treat their employees as well as you do. People would find new pride dropping their money at your doorstep. Take a lesson from SC Johnson Wax. They treat their employees like royalty (or at least not serfs!).
Next, instead of trying to broaden your focus and assuming that you can find some way to romance the jet set to shop your stores, why not simply build lease space on your spacious store campuses and invite the high end retailers to set up close to you? You don't sell the same class of goods, what harm could it do to your business? It's worked for the big malls for many years. Invite those who specialize in the expensive trends to locate closer to you. In the end, it'll increase your foot traffic. If you're smart about it and can restore your reputation and respect, you could even buy interest in some of those high end retailers and kick things up a notch.
You have shown some interest in organic foods and I've heard tell that you're considering restaurants in some of your stores. Here's a novel idea -- create your own branded chain of strictly organic, in-store snack and sandwich shops. You certainly have the resources. Offer organic health drinks and specialized snacks which cater to the health conscious among us (and having some kosher items available would be a good idea too). Remember the old avenue delicatessens? Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. Wal-Avenue Delicatessen, I can hear the cash registers now.
I could go on all day with this stuff but I have other things to write about. I'll leave you to ponder these concepts Wal-Mart. Go ahead, brain storm and toss my ideas around. I only want to see you get the naysayers off your backs. Nobody is winning in this game of pulling rugs from under each other, it's time for some work to get done. Stop flirting with corporate domination and get back to your creative capitalist roots. Just remember that for long-term success you're going to have to spend a few more dollars and the winners always serve their people first. I'm counting on you guys to swallow your pride and get the job done. Please don't let us down.

I read where one analyst said Wal-Mart will not fire Lee Scott because the Walton family likes him and they own most of the company. Firing Mr. Scott might get the ball rolling on flying right again?

high end retailers wouldn't be on the same pavement with Wal-mart. Imagine the cringing of "find us at the Wal-mart complex". Ughh
And their health care plan only serves employee & workplace relations, not customer service or the outsourcing issues
I go to Walmart when I have to and I buy toilet paper. Their employees medical premiums mean nothing to me as a consumer. I just want to pay and get out as fast as that receipt checker will let me leave.
Wal-mart sold out the American business manufacturer... a dying breed. Cheap doesn't really mean much to me... unless of course it's cheap double ply quilted toilet paper on sale! If there was a big ole stamp that said Support American business I would buy & pay more!

Walmart doesn't have a health care plan, unless employees pay the premiums. I saw where Walmart is going to push AT&T High Speed Internet. That would be a waste of time untill AT&T,gets more towers install to strenghten the phone signal,in rual areas. In downtown Bedford,IN 47421,we have their DSL service but, dial up only runs,at 42.5KBPS and three mile east of the city limits,on State Road 50 East, dial up is 28.0 KBPS,which will not support DSL.

I think Walmart is missing the point all together. Customer service is the first thing they need to think about. What ever happened to the days when an associate would come up to you and ask if you need help finding anything? Sam Walton not only knew business, he knew customers. Customer service and low prices were very important to him. HAVE YOU ALL FORGOTTEN SAM WALTON? So many times i go into Walmart and see People that work there just getting along doing a job, not really interested in the cusomer. They just want to get the day over and pick up a paycheck. Walmart needs to take a look at this and find out WHY. These are the people that give that customer service, so why are they like this? Sam Waltom wanted happy customers and happy associates. Walmart you own the ballpark, It's time your exceutives learned how to play ball.

First of all, the benefits of Wal-Mart employees IS paid by the employees. They are paid a starting rate of $8.00/per hour. Be good and you get a raise in 90 days. BUT, they will work you like a DOG, they don't care if you have personal business or family needs that have to be taken care of, the SO-CALLED-MANAGERS they hire from the ones I have met are for starters lets say HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO GOD-DAMN IDEA ON HOW TO RUN THE DEPARTMENT THEY ARE IN CHARGE OF. Perfect example, I asked a manager in charge of the sporting goods department where I could find the lanterns, HMMM he had to ask an employee under him."THEY ROTATE THEIR MANAGERS EVERY 6 MONTHS WITHIN THE STORE". So none of them have a DAMN CLUE about the actual department they are running. Managers are glorified super's. They should get off their lazy asses and get to work just like the people they are in charge of. The items wal-mart sells are made in china (75% at least) unless it is produce and cigarettes. Leave the god damn chinese to sell their own crap and sell genuine AMERICAN MADE and Wal-Mart might have a long time future. Putting stores up 10 miles apart isn't the brightest idea neither. Wal-Mart has a HUGE turn over ratio as well. Employees come and go as quick as Wal-Mart can change oil. I can go on and on. But I will say this........Wal-Mart will keep buying CHINESE as well as ALOT of other retailers and "IT WILL BE THE DOWN FALL" of our economy, already is and has been. Keep our money in OUR country and theirs in theirs.

Walmart is being kicked around by most people because they are the richest. Yes they should learn to appreciate and take care of their employees. Yes
they should take care of the people in the country that feeds them. But who is the watch dog on some of
the other retailers around that work their employees
as hard but dont play fair either. We dont want to really solve the problems in this country for our
workers do we. We want to put Wal-Mart in there place. Lets do something for all of Americas workers
and play fare like we want Wal-Mart to do. Keep our
jobs in our country and get better health care programs for all our workers. Dont let big corparation have play with government and so on.
You all know what has to be done.Separate business
from government in some areas.Stop the pocket lining
of these big CEO in our country.

wal mart has hurt so many peole with doing away with the layaway. what were they thinking that everyone has a credit card wake up wal mart there are many people whom depend on the layaway system to get the things neeeded for their family, Christams and school supplies are a couple of items that are especially needs layaway
walmart you don't lose a thing to help us with layaway. You put the product back on the shelf if not picked up, and with credit cards there has to be a court battle to get their money ( which make more sense?)
bigger and better is not good for small towns we need friendly salespersons and understanding and
include wal mart layaways.I will not go to wal mart again till they put layaway back and I encourage my friend to do the same

I would just like to set the record straight. I worked for Wal-Mart for almost 15 years and I got fired because I had to take a leave of absence to help my sister in Texas. Because I wasn't at the store I transferred to for 6 months, no one would let me transfer back. They are getting rid of the old time associates and getting cheap help. I was only on leave for 2 weeks. I went to 17 different wal-marts and all of them said they had no openings. Well why were the hiring. The managers sit in the office all the time and talk about all the other associates. THey go in the breakroom and cuss like a sailor. there is the ones that do a great job and some that don't, but who gets the praise, the ones that don't do a good job. OMG i could tell you 15 years of crap, but it would do no good. I would like someone from wal-mart to call me and i would tell them a thing or 2 about their managers in henderson, texas store. I know the workers are overworked and under paid. THe associates do not get the praise they deserve. I really like shopping Target. their associates are friendly and like to help you.To everyone that reads this. Please don't shop walmart. They are taking away all of the programs that SAM WALTON built

I don't know about weezers store,I think she must work in fantasy land, but I was a dept. manager for close to seven years and made lass than 10 bucks an hour. I got outstanding reviews and got a whopping raise of 30 CENTS PER YEAR!! WOO HOO!! Also, most of my paycheck went for health insurance, and it was very limited insurance. Having a baby with health problems almost bankrupted us because of all that the insurance didn't pay. All the workers are grumpy because they have so much work put on them and not enough help! One worker to stock, order, clean, do price changes, inventory, etc. etc. for 3 or 4 departments is insane.
Wake up Wal Mart and treat your people with respect!!!

Walmart needs to bring the layaway back in all Ohio and West Virginia Walmart's.Corporate is hurting the single mom's and dad's that is lower calass and has to hold down 2-3 jobs in order to put supper on the table.we are not rich enough to carry Credit Cards and Debit Cards to pay for purchases. We are not Big cities like New York,Chicago,etc...WE NEED THE LAYAWAY BACK.IT'S VERY IMPORTANT.People aren't going to keep shopping at Walmart if these changes keep happening. These changes are hurting Walmart instead of helping.Alot of people are going to get to the place that they are going to shop else where and I don't blame them one single bit.Corporate needs to stop thinking about how much money that they are going to pocket and start thinking about drawing customers to the store before Walmart goes under.Yo definitely need to bring Layaway. That was the stupidiest idea ever to take it away.

Here in New Orleans Walmart is "punishing" us. Like most stores in the area, the new Super Walmart in the Garden District was looted. It took them a year to reopen, partially at least. Since that time they've opened an aisle or two a month, the entire store is still not functioning. Bear in mind there was no real storm damage to this store, it only needed new coolers in the grocery department, which, by the way was was the first part to re-open, and the rest of the store needed restocked.
By comparison, the stores In Harvey and Metairie (10 to 15 miles away) have been totally reopened for over a year, and they were both flooded. What gives Wally?
