The rumors about Wal-Mart intentionally mis-labeling and mis-packaging certain food offerings in its stores last year as the retailer moved into the "organic" arena have been around since the start of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.'s (NYSE:WMT) new entry into selling organic foods and related items.Strike the heaviest blow yet to the retailer on that note, though. Wisconsin-based Cornucopia Institute, an advocacy group, is accusing Wal-Mart of "organic fraud." The group claims that Wal-Mart is defrauding its customers by mislabeling non-organic products as organic. The Cornucopia Institute promotes sustainable farming and is one of the largest watchdogs of the organic food market as newer and larger retailers push their way into the approximately $15 billion industry.
The group stated that it conducted checks of Wal-Mart stores in five states -- and discovered labeling violations in virtually all of the "dozens of stores" it visited. While that does not constitute fraud in "all" Wal-Mart stores as it relates to "organic fraud," it is a decent representative sample nonetheless.
Wal-Mart came back with a rather goofy defense to the allegations, saying that it often mixes organic and conventional products on its shelves to make it easier for customers to find organic options. Um, what? I think separating organic and non-organic foods would make it much easier to distinguish between the two -- not the other way around.
The company responded with an emailed statement: "Although Wal-Mart has more than 2,000 locations that may offer up to 200 organic selections in addition to thousands of non-organic offerings, we believe it to be an isolated incident should a green organic identifying tag be inadvertently placed by or accidentally shift in front of the wrong item."

I do not want Wal Mart run for the employees; I want it run for me, the customer and I feel that they are doing this so I reward them with my business. Ford and GM were run too much under the control of the union employees --- see what happens! the customer must always come first!

I TOOK PRESCRIPTIONS TO WALMART ONE WAS FOR ME AND ONE WAS FOR MY HUSBAND. I WAS SICK THAT WEEK END AND MY HUSBAND PICKED THE PILLS UP.
MONDAY I HAD DISCOVERED THEY PUT THE WRONG LABELS ON THE BOTTLES, THEY PUT MY PROZAC ON MY HUSBANDS
PRILOSEC AND HIS PRILOSEC LABEL ON MY PROZAC.
MEAN WHILE MY HUSBAND TOOK MY PROZAC THINKING HE WAS RAKING HIS PRILOSEC ALL WEEKEND. MONDAY I SEEN WHAT THEY HAD DID WENT BACK TO THE STORE WENT TO THE PHARMACY ASK TO SPEAK TO A MANAGER THEY ASKED ME WHY I SHOWED THE AND THEY LAUGH AND ASKED ME IF MY HUSBAND WAS IN A GOOD MOOD. THAT WAS JUST WRONG.
SPOKE TO THE MANAGER TOM HE WAS SUPPOSED TO GET THE HEAD MANAGER ROGER, AND I WAITED, HE CAME BACK AND SAID THAT ROGER WAS NOT THERE AND FOR THE PHARMACY TO REDO THE LABELS AND PUT THEM ON THE RIGHT BOTTLES AND GIVE ME MY 20.00 CO-PAYMENT BACK.
MEANWHILE THEY WERE LAUGHING ABOUT THIS, THAT WAS JUST WRONG.
SINCE THEN I HAVE MOVED MY PRESCRIPTIONS TO ANOTHER PHARMACY. THE KICKER OF THIS IS I WAS AN EMPLOYEE AT THE TIME.

I have a suggestion for the 'easy button' when dealing with organic items. Why not designate one area of each isle..like the same end of each isle..as organic. Then stick the big green 'organic' sign above the section. How could organic items be shelved with nonorganic items doing it this way? It would be easier for me knowing where the organic items are EVERY time I shop instead of going on a scavenger hunt for them. Just a suggestion...it's not rocket science people.

Wal-mart also sells a bogus eye-round roast beef. I was astonished to learn that after I cooked this bogus beef, it was some sort of processed garbage. Very deceiving, to say the least, on their part. Will NEVER shop at Wal-mart again.

Mislabel, is different than misplacing. Organic goceries are generally sold at a higher price, in relation to its higher costs.
Those who sell and buy are both willing partners in any transaction governing organic products.
Let the facts be presented to those who govern the industry and if wrong can be established then a just punishment should be haste.
Smoke screens do little to gain consumer trust and business. Walmart could easily damage its image with those consumers willing to pay more for a product labeled organic. Those consumers will go elsewhere and spend their monies for that kind of quality.

In all retail there will be some rude people for what ever the reason. I'm positive that when I go to a restaurant there is a neon sign over my head saying please abuse me and don’t' give me good service. When I go in to a Wal-Mart there maybe a few unfriendly people in there but I think customers should be allow to shop where they want if they are friendly or not. Unions and Competitors will say many things about Wal Mart. I get my money's worth when I go in there every time. When I have issues they take care of it. I've seen abuses by other folks who go in to Wal Marts and it amazes me they keep their doors open. Is Wal Mart perfect nope, but neither is anyone else. I will shop at Wal Mart as long as they keep those doors open.

Welcome to the world of "big box stores". Let me tell you something though. Today's shoppers are laregly ill mannered childish people. Picking things up on impulse and moving them three feet, or three aisles and putting them back down. They walk along brushing the shelves with their hands sweeping merchandise out of position, they knock things off the shelves and run over them with the carts, etc. etc. etc. They complain because they are in a rush and can't find what they want. They turn their children loose in the store because they don't want to manage their behavior. And you wonder how labels get moved? Also let me point out that these companies do not pay the sales floor staff enough to live on, and they don't train them to do anything beyond placing the merchandise on the shelf. Then you have the added delimma of there not being enough equipment to go around, so some of the employees are forced to guess where it goes. And last but not least, if management thinks they are not working "fast enough" - they are going to lose this dead end job. They do the best they can, most of the time. Maybe we should consider all the facts before we jump to conclusions?

As a former employee of wal-mart i can tell you that
this is just another example of their dishonest dealings. When i worked there the managers would change paint lables on paint cans so they could sell wal-mart paint for name brand prices. Profit-thats all that matters to them.

Hey Donna, Nobody is forcing you to shop at walmart. You dont have to put up with the rudeness. If you dont like how you are treated...go somewhere else. Somewhere they will treat you like a queen and you can pay more for their politeness. I had to laugh at your idiotic comment... "It is bad enough we have to put up with the rudeness that goes along with WALMART"

It amazes me how absolutely stupid people can be. You people who still work for Wal-Mart wont open your eyes and see what's really going on, will you? Like Karen "I work at a Walmart and have not observed mislabeling in anything. It may happen in some stores but not ours." I'm sorry Karen but that is one of the dumbest comments I think I've ever heard. I WILL GUARANTEE that I could find AT LEAST 100 items in YOUR STORE that are mislabled. "We also have wonderful medical and dental insurance." You just keep telling yourself that. You realize the last I checked less than half of Wal-Marts associates can afford that wonderful health and dental insurance. And you ChuckW. "Wal-Mart is not intentionally misleading anyone." "This company says it found violations in stores in 5 states. What about the other 45 states?" They probably didn't check the other 45 states stupid. What, is Wal-Mart so special that this organic food orginization has to drive all over God's country to check every store? Smart guy... Do you have even an idea of how much travel it would take just to visit all 50 states? Mary "This just makes me wonder if this is another trick to make Wal Mart look bad." What trick? No one needs tricks. Was the Tom Coughlin thing a trick too?? No the only trick that was turned was the Mexican hooker that Tommy boy paid with Wal-Mart money. Or you must be referring to the trick they played on the Wal-Mart PR guy that slurred "Jews , Blacks and Arabs." No, no tricks. It doesn't take a trick to make idiots look stupid.
I worked for Wal-Mart for 12 years. Until I got smart and got out. My wife worked for the "Evil Empire" for 7. Unfortunately my Mom still works for them, approaching 10 yrs. And my Grandpa has worked there for going on 20 yrs. I have to tell you that I have seen everything there is to see of Wal-Mart from the inside and out. This is a truely Evil company. You people that are either too blind, stupid or both to realize this make me sick. People need to realize it and complain about it. Yell it. Scream it. If no one ever brings it up they'll just keep doing what there doing and ruining peoples lives and getting richer in the process.

What a stupid racist comment about "ILLEGAL MEXICANS" AND THEIR UNWASHED HANDS... has the writer not seen some of the 'white americans' who work in Walmart, or any other supermarket for that matter? This kind of racism is just as dumb as the people who spew it... why do they think their hands are any cleaner? How many of us wash our hands after going to the bathroom.... honestly???

I blame the Wal-Mart kids. When Sam Walton ran the business it was an honest up-and up company and he believed in all things American. When he died so did the company and the honest way of dealing with their employees and customers.

I love Walmart! My money goes a lot farther in their stores. The people are not rude to me, I guess because I am not rude to them. If they are putting "organically grown" labels on non-organically grown food, the watchdogs have a right to call them on it. How big a deal is it? I'll bet they're still selling the organic products lower than the non-organically brown products of their competitors. Blessings - Chuck

Beltran I have one for you. I'm Irish and DAMN proud of it. I get my Ass out there every day and work hard. I'm a contractor. But no I wont get out in the fields and work for 4 dollars an our to pick anything. If the dirty illegals would get out of the fields so legal americans could make a decent wage in the fields, this country would be a better place. Legal americans, for the most part, aren't affraid of picking crops. They just aren't dumb enough to do it for pennys.

This has to be the most inane set of responses I have ever seen. We have the WalMart Haters, who nonetheless must shop there. We have WalMart Supporters who might be hoping for a raise or ppromotion. But the most intriguing group of all...the 'Grocery Investigators' and their media connections! Who ARE these people who creep up and down the aisles, stalking label errors, and shouting "Eureka" when they find something amiss??? "Oh My Gawd!" they scream, "Alert the media!" I agree that this is a worthless trip up Molehill Mountain. As far as getting your money's worth, folks, either choose another store or grow a Victory Garden.
