Many lower income students and first generation families are captivated by the prospect of going to college, as well they should be. Given the greatly increased earning potential of college graduates and the tremendous value that further education imparts upon our society, it only stands to reason that higher education should be a national top priority.
Publicis Groupe (NYSE:PUB) (Euronext Paris:PUB), has joined forces with the Advertising Counsel and the American Counsel on Education to provide a direct Public Service Announcement campaign designed to help lower income and first generation students become aware of exactly what they need as preparation for getting into college classrooms.
Lumina Foundation, which is helping to spearhead this public service effort, states that closing the gap in college enrollment between the highest and lowest American income groups would add nearly $250 billion to the GNP and nearly $80 billion in tax revenues.
Publicis, operating pro bono, has created a straight forward campaign which focuses on four core ideals that prospective college students should become aware of well before they are ready to start looking at college brochures.
1.) Make everyone aware that you intend to go to college.
2.) Make college admission a personal focus.
3.) Find your "right" school and program.
4.) Locate your funding sources. (There's a lot of them out there)
Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings states: "There are far too many Americans who want to go to college but can't -- because they're either not prepared, can't afford it, or lack even the most basic knowledge about the college admissions process." Publicis is taking an active roll in correcting those short falls.
Now our part as parents is to keep the kids focused, provide the atmosphere for learning and of course make sure the kid's cell phone stays charged up.
