General Motors Corporation (NYSE:GM) -- for now, the world's largest automaker -- plans to release its latest quarterly earnings on January 30th (a week from today). Will the giant automaking behemoth have another dismal quarter of performance or will it have picked itself up from the semi-ashes of sluggish SUV sales and uninspired designs this time around?
From some accounts, the ailing auto giant may see solid earnings over the next two quarters if you believe a report a few days ago from Goldman Sachs. Some investors, though, are not so sure.
GM had some nice things to say at the recent Detroit auto show about its outlook, the outlook for the auto industry in general and its ongoing strategy. But, results are what counts and in the last few quarters GM's results -- while decent all factors considered -- have not even come close to the results from red-hot automaker Toyota. Ford is no longer GM's largest adversary in my opinion.
Although GM has provided no guidance for this most recent quarter, analysts polled by Thomson Financial expect GM to post an adjusted fourth-quarter profit of $1.14 per share (EPS) on $42.52 billion in revenue. What do you think?

GM may have a good quarter, and things might be ok for now, but considering their corporate culture hasn't changed much in 40 years, I don't hold much stock(no pun intended) for them in the long run.

Anyone who tries to compare the Gm of today to the Gm of the last 40 years is an outsider. Anyone from within the corporation (from the guy catching parts to Rick Wagoner) know the huge leaps and bounds the company has taken to improve quality. If the stupid yuppies that run the news agencies would stop pimping Toyota, the American public would actually try an American product. How many newspapers make their major headlines something bad about Japanese cars? Do they make it major news when it is found that Toyota has had more recalls in 2006 than cars they have sold in the U.S.? No! Do they make it known that a G.M. vehicle has taken major car of the year awards, over any Japanese automakers? No! I could go on and on. Until Americans start trying the new era of American cars and stop letting the (I think compensated) news executives make decisions for them, American auto companies will never regain the respect they once had. What really is sickening is that so many of these news media types actually poke fun at the troubles the big three are facing.

I agree with mickey, the US companys have made great strides in the last ten years. I have always drove a GM vehicle in business and usually run my vehicles to 200K or more. I have NEVER had to do a major repair on any vehicle. I also agree the media and Wall Street seem to dislike the American manufacturers and perhaps the unions. Why does the recall of Toyotas 3-4 million motors hardly make any news but any Big Three recall for a seat belt buckle or latch etc. generate headlines for a week. Goodness that is like comparing a sprained wrist to a heart attack! The engine is your main component. So just give the Big Three a break and try them open mindedly.

Finally.... I hear some news that gets out thru the public consumer on quality issues/recalls about foreign competition. I work for GM and always hear how the unionized American worker has to do better, how we can't touch the quality of foreign competition, how this isn't good enough or that isn't good enough, or how we are just overpaid underacheivers. Well folks...all we ask is do a little homework when you buy your new vehicles. Don't listen to everything you hear. Just last week the workers at our plant received our daily report of the recalls thru toyota on their engine problems(sludge)(like Dale referred to in his comment) and all I could think of was...it is not me who GM needs to be telling this bit of information to, it is the American consumer. I am a proud American who wants what is good for the American people, and I certainly don't believe everything that I hear from people who invest overseas. When you say or when you hear "The quality is much better at Toyota than GM, Ford or Chrysler"...don't rely on issues from 10 years ago, because that is what you have always heard. Do a little research and you will find that the Big 3's quality is as good if not better than the foreign competition. And, me being a proud
American sure do like the idea of my children and their children being proud Americans as well. Supporting foreign competition is just taking your hard earned paychecks and hand delivering it overseas while Americans here are losing their jobs daily. And a little bit of info to white collar workers who invest overseas, these job eliminations, and moving of jobs overseas will eventually get to you as well. In summation.. I am not sitting here asking the consumers to buy so called "lower quality vehicles" just for the sake of buying American vehicles...that would be rediculous, but what I am asking you to do is check us out again if you had a problem with a
vehicle before, do the homework. Lets all work together to make the American Dream a reality for all of us!

It is good to see that there are still patriotic Americans out there. I am a GM loyalist also. We GM people know our vehicles are better than the junk shit the japs are producing. The people in media should receive an encounter by us loyalists and we will show them what we think of their bulls&$t. It makes me sick to my stomach to see 70 year old North Americans driving import vehicles. GM produces more vehicles than Toyota globally, and GM has a hell of a lot less recalls. Not only that when people think Toyota is catching up to GM with sales they seem to forget that every continent GM outsells Toyota even in Asia if you don't count Japan. Toyota sells over 2.5 million vehicles in Japan, GM close to zero, why, because the japanese are loyal to their brands. Wake up AMERICA. Oh yeah i forgot i am Canadian, and propably a hell of a lot more loyal to our General Motors Corp. than three quarters of americans.

Just a followup to the comments by Peter and Casey after mine. I did not mention the loyalty or patriotism issue as I thought the facts win without that but now mentioned I think it is almost a crime not to buy American and support your friends, neighbors and family.

Anybody ever hear about how the Japanese stop American influence in their country? Cartoons !!
Our American made Cartoon, The Simpson's, was being watched so much, that the Japanese cartoon maker's were hurting financially. So the Japanese government banned "The Simpson's" so that THEIR cartoon company's shows would be watched. Enough said!!
