Maria Bartiromo, who rose to fame as CNBC's Money Honey during the bull market of the 90s, should be fired for showing incredible lapses in judgment regarding her relationship with ousted Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:C) executive Todd Thomson.
One of the cardinal rules of journalism is that you aren't supposed to write about or show favor toward your friends. The Wall Street Journal's (subscription required) expose of Bartiromo's relationship with Thomson shows that they were at a minimum buddies.
What's more disturbing, however, is CNBC's reluctance to look into the matter further. I'd like to know if CNBC ever reimbursed Citigroup for Bartiromo's air travel. Moreover, doesn't the channel's corporate owner General Electric Co. (NYSE:GE) have an ethics rule or two about employes accepting gratuities from clients? Citigroup, after all, after all does by advertising on CNBC.
But I guess CNBC like most media organization has a thin skin. It is eager to expose faults in others but when it comes to its own problems forget it.

It's Just Sad--That Such On Air Professionalism--And Class-- As Maria Has Brought To CNBC--Can Be Influenced--By Power And Money--Of The Banking Business--And She Fell For It Hook--Line--And Sinker.
Maria--I'm Ashamed Of You--You Have seen These People And Massive Money--Stab People--And Politicians In The Back--Repeatedly.

We are GE shareholders and assume GE has a published policy covering this matter. If Maria has violated that policy, then she should be treated just like any other employee, whatever the incident calls for.

give the folks involved time to explain the circumstances which can be verified. little early yet to call for chopping off maria's block. she has been an able and articulate reporter, to my way of thinking, and so let the dust settle til before leaping to any conclusion.

I'm a GE shareholder. Donald Trump gave Miss USA a second chance. Maria is much prettier, so she also deserves a second chance.

The fact is Maria is mediocre at what she does, has bamboozled management there for years and she has finally been nailed. They should can her and she should never work in the business again..both because of this lapse and because she is really trerrible at what she does. AND dumb as a stone. Her appearance on Jeopardy was more than just someone doing poorly on a game show, it was the essense of what Maria is, dumb!

Maria Bartiromo has been one of the most professional in terms of appearance and
presentation and knowledge; therefore she for many years has been my favorite reporter. She doesn't deserve to be fired as I can't imagine her doing anything unethical. Irene

Hey, give her a break. I'm a GE shareholder too, and I like Maria. She's a helluva lot smarter, and prettier than Donald Trumps second chance gal. Get on with it.

She generates too many viewers. She will never be fired. Especially now that the show is in a ratings rut.

re: sidney sloves comment--it amazes me how everything that happens today is related to bush & cheney. how did they get involved with an incredible lapse of judgement on maria's part? maybe keith olbermann gave her the head's up to get on the flight--or maybe it was chris matthew's idea.

Y'all seem to be divided about Ms. Bartitomo. She has been doing things unethical. Her husband manages a (stock) hedge fund. She cavorts not just the country, but the world with CEO's,Fund managers and Chief Financial officers. Don't you believe she is sucking information from them, especially Thomson formerly of Citigroup, her alleged bosom buddy and channeling it to hubby OR the reverse. At any rate, she has cracked the barrier and men are falling over her to find out what's up in the market and she is still working. Todd Thomson, who in my mind is not Mr. Niceguy here, buying the affections and physical attentions of Bartiromo. I must stop here and ask "where is the husband's (Jonathan Steinberg) OUTRAGE. Is this a husband or a (person who arranges liason's with person's of the opposite sex) there is a name for that. Come on guys...Maria is Hot...angellically beautiful and she could sleep in my bed anytime but, If you guy, would you want your wife flying corporate jet all over the world under pretext of gathering news, etc. because the big boss at GE (owner of CNBC) assigns her to do this to garner whatever business knowledge at whatever cost. She has been used and I think she loves it. I'll be glad to hear she has been....FIRED. Former GE CEO Jack Welch would.
