Former associate attorney general Webb Hubbell -- known for his highly publicized fall from grace during the Clinton Administration -- claims "responsible" marijuana smokers can finally exhale. Working with NORML (The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws) and the McLaughlin Insurance Company, Hubbell appears on a five-minute audio message touting the program. "Hello, this is Webb Hubbell," the recording begins, with a crisp McCoy Tyner soundtrack. "Life insurance is now available for responsible marijuana smokers. For years, [they] have not been able to access affordable life insurance ... No longer."
He then relays the story of a NORML member (and "responsible" marijuana smoker) whose trucking business loan required additional insurance he could not qualify for. He reached out to NORML for help, who contacted their insurance agent, Mr. Hubbell -- now a VP at the McLaughlin Company. Mr. Hubbell was able to convince a carrier to insure this individual, and the rest is history.
But what about the fact that marijuana is still, you know, illegal? Michael Vick was recently detained in an airport because his bottle of water simply smelled like weed. The Washington Post asked NORML's executive director Allen St. Pierre such a question, to which he replied that while marijuana is technically illegal even in the Netherlands (where it can be found on aisle six next to the Pillsbury Toaster Strudel), 11 U.S. states have decriminalized the drug.
Now, you may be wondering, what exactly is "responsible marijuana use?" I spoke with Keith Stroup, NORML's legal counsel, who referred to their Principles of Responsible Cannabis Use, which details "the appropriate and inappropriate ways to use the drug," making sure I also understood, "We don't think people should just go out and get stoned."
"Forty-six percent of the people in this country have smoked marijuana at some point in their lives," he continued. "Why should we treat half of the population like criminals?"
So, is this new policy a small victory against cannabis laws that prohibit the use of marijuana? Or has the insurance industry simply figured out that smoking on the couch while listening to 'Dark Side of the Moon' is a relatively benign activity?

The insurance industry operates from statistics, not ignorance, nor prejudice, nor political agendas... That being said, I am not surprised that they are willing to insure responsible cannabis users.

Hemp is one of the most valuable and misunderstood crops this country (and many others) are missing out on. And not only for medicinal purposes, but also MANY industrial uses.

Woah, that's some crazy sh*t man, just think of how many millions we'll save in taxes when the government stops spending our money on "this is your brain...this is your brain on drugs" campaigns that we all know don't work. Let's face it, Dare keeps good kids that would never do drugs off drugs, that's about it.
Too bad the government will find some other dumb political excuse to spend your money on. Oh, oh, I know, they should use all our tax money funding a war that has no defined enemies and no real boundaries. Blow the crap out of everything we see and hope we don't make any new enemies by hitting a few houses here and there. We'll call it a war on terror and we'll go after every bad man who's name comes up...(especially the one who made my daddy look bad)
What!!?? we aren't winning my war? Well, we should spend more and send more troops to die. Yeah, that'll do it, I've never in my life had to stand up for my country on the battlegrounds, but I'll send your son and daughter to do it, you should be so proud of them.

Stop the stupidity. Legalize marijuana across the country. Alcohol is dangerous for everyone. Grass isn't except to the abuser.

crystal is very right, it has been used for centuries as rope, cloth and medicine, I know (personally) it has uses for helping depression, and it is safer than Prozac. However, as all medicines, it is not for everyone and anything someone ingests should be carefully monitored.

Pot should be decriminalized, controlled, taxed, and sold legally. It would reduce the load on the legal systems, the prisons, the police. It would take away a source of income for the black market and other criminal outfits. It would put alot of farmers back to work profitably.
Pot is certainly no worse than alchohol or tobacco. What ios the hold up here? Is this not simple common sense?

How many of you, ( or the people in power) know that the most common of cures - aspirin - comes in natural form from the common willow tree??

It's A great idea, except for the FACT that there
is no record of even one death directly linked to
just smoking pot. That's not to say there are not
other variables pertaining to health. Moderation is
the main key to sustainability. Happy Trails !!!

If pot was decriminalized it would take away profit for the law makers/enforcers, prison guards, judges, construction workers that build prisons, prison doctors, lawyers, prison cafeteria workers. Incarceration is big business.

I think its stupid! Its like giving life insurance to illegal aliens. I'm sorry, but I don't drink,or do drugs,or smoke ciggs. but why legalize things that kill ourselves? People die from pot, lung cancer!!!! just because there is no nicotine, its still inhaling smoke, which is BAD!!!!! I'm sorry, but i believe drugs are for losers, and people who stick up for them and drugs, are just losers themselves.

Legalize and tax the stuff. The Liquor bigwigs have their pockets lined with gold, and have been poisoning those who choose to take part in that sort of conduct for years. while im typing, i should mention that we should also be taxing the churches. If you taxed both you would have an influx of money to go to social programs aimed at keeping our children safe and our elderly taken care of.
Wake up people, we are a society where everyone is doing drugs wheather its pot, cocaine, LSD,anti-depressants, cigarettes, liquor,or painkillers dosent matter much if they are legal or not, and mabye with some government regulations and taxes, you wouldent have these young people taking stricknine and believing its LSD.

It cannot be taxed or controlled, there are too many sources for it on the black market. But it should be legal for many reasons. For instance if I want to come home after work and light one up, and it is less harmful that cigarettes, than why not? Not to mention it has medicinal purposes. I have been a smoker for 11 years and during that time I have never once been in trouble for using, neither physically nor mentally.

I am 61 years old. I know people who have smoked pot for over 40 years. None have went on to hard drugs and all have raised fine families, worked hard and paid taxes. I do not smoke pot ,but i think it should be legel.I was married to a drunk and would take a pot smoker over someone who drank any day.

It is another step normalizing the use of marijuana.
Sometime during the 1920's pot was the only legal drug in the U.S. William Randolph Hearst used his newspapers to scandalize pot which eventually led to where we still sit today.
It is going to take the same power and ability to change the mind shift back to the days before WRH.

I am hard-pressed in my fight every single day against chronic enrve pain resulting from an impinged dorsal nerve root at C-5 which causes all hell to break loose in my right arm sometimes. My physicians permit me any powerful narcotic for analgesia but it is marijuana which has absolutely been my saving grace. It nails the pain even on my worst days and keeps me happier to boot. Unlike the traditional opiod analgesic meds my doctor can prescribe, I have never heard of a marijuana overdose--decriminalization must come and it must come soon.

The government will never legalize pot simply because it's too hard to tax. It's like moonshine. Anyone with a little knowhow can produce it and sell it, and there's not really any way for the government to track it to see if you're actually paying taxes on how much you're selling or if you're cheating them out of some money. And god forbid Joe American make a little money on the side without notifying Uncle Sam.
If that's not a good enough reason for them to keep it illegal, there's also the matter that they've been spouting off anti weed propaganda for decades. They're not going to suddenly admit they were wrong. Hell, look at Bush if you want an example of denial in the government.
