When PFadvice.com asked a real-live burglar, "Where is the best place to hide money?" he replied, "a bank." Which should be the final word on the subject. But if you prefer to keep a certain amount of cash handy in case you need to, I don't know, drive to Florida all night wearing a diaper, you need to think like a burglar when choosing where to stash it in your home.Burglars, according to the interviewee, have two clear objectives: "1. To steal your money and valuables" and "2. To get out of the house as quickly as possible with these goods." So, while you don't want to leave cash in obvious places, an extremely complicated spot could be even worse. "If I can't find money and valuables in the normal places I usually find them," he says. "I would continue to tear the house apart until I found something."
He suggests, then, that you do leave money in obvious places -- cookie jar, drawer by the phone, etc. -- at an amount commensurate with your household. "If you are in an upscale community and only leave $100," he says. "I would assume there is more and keep looking."
His number one choice for a hiding place? A child's toy. For two reasons: (a) because parents don't trust kids with money and (b) because going through a child's toys could take hours. Therefore, If you're looking for a receptacle in which no burglar would dare stick his hand, I would go no further than an Easy Bake Oven.

yeah everyone....be stupid enough to post where you all hide your money and valuables...oh wait...why not put your address on the site as well. I have been burglarized before and lost everything sentimental to me and I am much smarter than that now. My money is invested and valuables are in safe place. I don't buy the best tv's or stereo's anymore. I put the money into my home as well. If they want to pull up my hardwood floors and kitchen counters and hand painted tile from brasil..haha..be my guest, but if they come in my house thinking they're walking out with nice tv's and stereo's and jewels...the joke's on them. Plus I have a cute little dog...if they can make it just walking through my son's room, they won't know where to start to look for anything. Don't leave anything of value at home is the best advice.

I think everyone should carry a gun. Why? For one reason we wouldn'd be having this conversion right now. Granted there would be alot of people getting shot for the first year or so, but that would just be the ones on the bottom of the food chain. Like a burglar, car jacker, purse snacher, rapist, door to door saleman, etc...... Just think of a world were there is no crime. Why? Would you steal an old womans purse if you knew she had a 9mm under her dress... No, didn't think so.

I'll be expecting a lot of people going to jail for murder this year,a lot of loved ones lost. Why are you suggesting murder? Don't you realize that someones relative youre shooting there? As for the money, hide it in the bank, a savings account preferably.Or in a matress.

I like the idea of the child's toy, but what about hiding your valuables in your freezer? I've never known burglars to frequent freezers. Maybe some have, but it's not a common place for them to look.

In response to Judy, 2/15/07, I also moved to mass from the suburbs of NY and boy what a mistake. This state is overrun with drug addicts, alcoholics and criminals, starting with their politicians. Thanks to Kennedy and Kerry.

Why not dig a hold in your yard, bury all your valuables and cash in it. Oops, that probably wouldn't work either. That nosey neighbor, would call the police if they saw you outside at 2 am digging up your cash, so you can run to Mickey D's for that all beef patty.....

What you need to stash is a Glock in your waistband to kill these vermin when you catch them in your house. All burglars should be executed in the act.Never come home in a white zone, and walk into what could be your death scene.Stay in an orange zone, ready to go to red. These "people" will kill you for your small change,so be vigilent and train with your Glock.
--Clearly, this is the best idea. After all, who couldn't make a mistake at first sight (sometimes so-called burglars are only friends/family calling at the wrong time) and shoot somebody they know? That's a lot of legal charges you're going to be explaining away.
Do take those macho Glocks somewhere where guns SHOULD be fired "automatically", like a firing range.
I can't count all the times I've surprised people in my house during the nightly hours..."Omigod I thought you were a burglar!" has come up at least 6 times by now.
Thank god they don't use YOUR suggestion!

There are very good reasons for people to not put all their cash in the bank and want to hide some at home. 1) What if there is a run on the banks and you can't get your money out? It happenned in 1929 and it happenned in the 80's with the S&L debacle. 2)I have heard from an asset protection specialist that the average American gets sued about 5 times in his or her lifetime.(Seems high but that is what he said.) Any money you have in the bank is up for grabs ( those records will be subpoeaned.) 3) Your accounts can be attacked by hackers, creditors and the IRS. You would not believe how much money is stolen by hackers but the banks keep it out of the news to not destroy our confidence in the banking system. 4) If you die and want to pass on money to your kids, all the money in your accounts can be tied up in probate for years, and fees and taxes will eat it away.
My suggestion is to never look like you have money, don't tell anyone you have money, drive a cheap or old car, live in an incredibly junked up and messy house. But don't live in a poor neighborhood. Have a room where stuff is piled up to the ceiling. Hide your goodies there. If they want to go through that, it could take them a year.

My grandfather had a small business at his home. He put his money inside a piece of pipe which he had capped at both ends and then put it in a pile of pipe pieces next to his barn. He was never robbed.
