Can't get enough state quarters? You're in luck: The U.S. Mint is launching The Presidential Dollar Program. $1 coins featuring our nation's presidents will be released in order, with Presidents Washington, Adams, Jefferson and Madison this year; Monroe, Adams, Jackson and van Buren next year. Chester Arthur fans have to wait until 2012. And the last scheduled is Richard M. Nixon, slated for 2016. Mark your calendars. For the skeptical, the Mint promises "larger, more dramatic artwork," and what they call "edge-incused inscriptions," marking the year of issuance, along with the words "E Pluribus Unum," "In God We Trust" and the mint mark. The Mint web site claims "due to the minting process used on the circulating coins, the edge-incused inscription positions will vary with each coin," encouraging obsessive coin collectors everywhere to embrace their inner pack rat.
But isn't this just a retread of the ho-hum Sacagawea Golden Dollar? Not even close, as the new coins promise unique features including Obverse Design, Edge Lettering and a Lady Liberty on the reverse.
No doubt, Americans young and old (but not in-between) will rejoice. For the rest of us, it's nothing but continued coin confusion and heavy pockets.

Your final comment about "coin confusion and heavy pockets" is extremely ignorant and a sign of zero research for a "so called reporter". The huge Statue of Liberty and "$1" on the reverse will not look like any other US coin and cannot possibly be confusing to anyone with a functioning cerebrum. As for heavy pockets: would you rather get change for you $20 bill from a fare card or snack vending machine in quarters or nickels? Or perhaps not be able to use a $20 bill and have to go get the quarters frist from a bank and carry them around?
not to mention the more than $500 MILLION savings we could see from switching from rag-dollars that wear out fast to 30+ year lived dollar coins.

The dollar coin is a great idea.
However, this one looks like an arcade token.
It is very poorly designed and executed.
I'd be ashamed to carry it in my pocket.

Love the coins. We need to all ask the government to stop using paper dollars.

Its amazing that the feds would come up with this idea after the fiasco of the state quarter program. The biggest problem is the collectiblity aspect so that millions and millions of quarters are taken out of circulation. Now they're going to repeat that mistake with a collectible dollar coin.
Now I think a dollar coin (standardized one, not 43 versions) is a great idea, but it must be coupled with the end of the expensive paper dollar bill program so that there will be reason for people to use the more durable (i.e., longer lasting) and less expensive to manufacture coin.

I see coin collecting as a way for the country to get us to invest big bucks, like buying bonds. I don't think it's a mistake or oversite, just a smooth way to raise investment in the US.

The new dollar coins are great except for one thing: they look more silver than gold, thus too much like the quarter.
Years ago I stopped carring one dollar bills in my cash register. Keep the coins coming!

Edge incused 'in god we trust'? taking it off the face is the first step towards removing it from the coins altogether. The slippery slope..

I have worked with money for about 15 years in a very fast paced retail store, I go through about 100 one dollar bills every 1-2 hours, if they get rid of paper $1, things could get alittle tricky for retail because that sure is alot of weight and space these coins will take up. They average customer gets back $3 every purchase and has far a pennies it is not just old people who dig for that penny, 1 out of 3 of my customers will dig for a penny. I say get rid of all money and have everyone use debit, now that will be a money savings plan!

Did anyone check with The Standard Cash Register folks? One reason the dollar coin has failed in the past is that there is no place or slot in a standard register cash drawer for a dollar coin. Ergo - The dollar coins are stashed uneder the drawer and not circulated. So far, only the post office circulates the coins in their automated stamp machines. We need to check with Walmart, Sears, HEB, Taco Cabana, and other mega-retailers to insure that we (they) are indeed ready for the new coin.

Canada had the right idea when it stopped using paper dollars and forced people to use the dollar coins.

The new U. S. Presidents dollar coins are a great idea. They are practical since they last a lot longer than bills and easy to use in a vending machine. They are educational as they cover the history of the United States and make a great hobby for collectors thus creating a profit for the mint. Having a pocket full of these coins while working will also help one lose weight.

Anyone with a bad back (millions of americans)will certainly not wish to carry more coin money. I will refuse them whenever offered to me. I don't need the confusion or extra weight in my pocketbook!

I like the look of the dollar coin IF the gold doesn't fade off. It was wise to put 'In God We Trust' on them.
Keeping the paper would might be wise too.
Maybe ALL the paper should be coin, the counterfitters won't like it, of course; theft and murders will rise. Lets drag a safe with wheels, chained to our arm around shopping.
Only collectors will enjoy the coins. Teens want the paper twenties in there pockets.

Coins are fine for the coin collecter, however this is just another big waste of time. Our money system
has always been a problem, in that making new types
and designs of it, never has stopped the forger from
making and distributing it all over the world. I suggest, since we already use plastic, lets make
money in the form of credits instead of wasting metal on coins and various dollar bills. I for one don't like the idea of heavy coins in my pockets.Think of the fact that we'll save resources (like tree's),and time.
People won't be able to forge bad checks, steal from others, and better control of our money will better serve all. One last thought. Every country that has changed or modified its currancy has had
problems. We already have that problem here , and it began when the gcvernment decided to do away with the GOLD and SILVER standard. This in itself
has caused a big loss of prudence. We spend what we
don't have hoping for a better tomarrow. God bless America. May we find a way out of bad times for her.
