Nick Perry's Trading Floor Blog this morning links to an article heralding the debut of "Bilk," a new brew introduced at a Japanese liquor store Feb. 1 that combines a low-malt beer with milk. The beverage, which is brewed with about 30 percent milk, is presumably higher in calcium and lower in alcohol than traditional brew, and can help establishments find a use for their extra milk before it spoils. A win-win? (I'm thinking the loser here might be whomever is drinking it.) Chitoshi Nakahara, the brains behind this controversial idea, claims that "Bilk" tastes like ordinary beer -- if you can ignore the "slight milky scent." So far, the concoction is only available by mail order or at six local shops and it is currently sold out due to press attention (and morbid curiosity). Somehow I doubt that the early popularity of "Bilk" is making Anheuser-Busch Cos (NYSE:BUD) and other major brewers terribly nervous.
This brainstorm reminds me of one of Laverne & Shirley's titular characters, who liked to drink a mixture of milk and Pepsi (NYSE:PEP). Now that I think about it, Laverne De Fazio also worked at a brewery, so she was just one step away from experimenting with "Bilk" herself. Just think ... we could have had this idea stateside 30 years ago. Schlemiel! Schlemazl! Hasenpfeffer Incorporated!

Hey, it's sounds a little like a posset. A drink made with milk; beer and nutmeg that was a popular hangover/tummyache cure in the Middle Ages. Still wouldn't the chemistry sounds bad on this one. Isn't milk going sour the same as milk fermenting? One of you science types ought to know, how about it?

Ladies and Gentleman of the Inexperienced & Uneducated to the world of Beer Consumption; THIS IS NOT A "NEW" Concept!! The people of the Caribbean Islands HAVE BEEN DOING THIS FOR YEARS!! They've mix Stouts and Lagers with milks, creams, nuts, spices, and berries; and I might added these elixirs are tasty to the tongue, filling to the belly and quite refreshing to the soul. It is also rumored that these concoctions enhance sexual libido and stamina. Wake Up - and do your homework people!!

I seem to recall that, in one of John Steinbeck's books ("Cannery Row" or "Sweet Thursday," I think) the character "Doc" always wanted to know what a beer milk shake tasted like; I believe he tried it and found it disappointing.

for all the beer i've drank over the years, this is a new concept to me. when you start talking about spices, nuts, creams, and everything else, it sounds somewhat appealing. but my initial reaction to the idea of beer mixed with milk on the verge of spoiling was...an uneasy stomach. sour, nauseous, blah. i don't drink animal milk, but soy/rice etc milk sounds no more appetizing. i'll keep the milky white stuff out of my hops for now.

There is nothing new under the sun. Beer drinkers in Portland, Oregon delight in having ice cream in dark beer, which was invented by Greg Higgins of Higgins restaurant and popularized by Beer Enthusiast Fred Eckhardt in his numerous beer tastings around the country. Expand your taste buds. Enjoy!

It should be mentioned that this "bilk" is NOT beer mixed with milk. I just tried mixing beer and milk and while the result doesn't look all that appetizing, it actually just tastes like beer. It goes down more easily too. I think bilk could take off.
(I mixed 3/4 of a cup of milk with a 12 oz beer)
