For the first time, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) was named to Fortune magazine's most admired companies. The annual Fortune survey asked businesspeople to vote for the companies they admired most, from any industry. Apple ranked 7th overall and 2nd within the computer company segment, behind International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM).
This survey ranked companies based on eight key attributes of reputation: innovation, people management, use of corporate assets, social responsibility, quality of management, financial soundness, long term investment and quality of products/services. Apple's industry rank was all 1's and 2's for everything, but social responsibility. Maybe its red iPod Nano Aids effort with Bono and U2 didn't cut muster with the voters?
Don't expect to see Apple leaving this list in years to come as Apple's competitors have watched it upend industries from computers to music, and now it has one of the most anticipated products in years -- the iPhone.

I have always been a loyal fan and consumer of Apple products since my first computer, nearly 20 years ago. Apple has always been a great company with innovative ideas, elegant designs, first class well-made products and excellant customer support and service. For years, the PC majority have thumbed their noses at the smaller, hard-core group of Mac users. Many desirable applications were not even Mac compatable. We were a small, exclusive and excluded club. 'If you can't join 'em, beat 'em." That's exactly what Steve Jobs has done since the introduction of the iPod. Apple has deserved to be in the top ten since it's inception, and I, for one, am proud to say 'I knew them when...' Apple has always been at the top, and if they just keep on doing what they've basically always been doing, they will remain there. Sure, the products are pricier than most, but you get what you pay for. Finally the rest of the civilized world has discovered what somee of us knew all along. Nothing has changed except public perception.
