Earlier this month we learned that some of the new George Washington dollar coins were found to be missing their In God We Trust inscriptions and today we hear about another mix-up on the new coins. According to a couple in Fort Collins, CO., they have come across a coin with something else missing ... this time George Washington himself has been left off the coin! After hearing about the first batch of coins missing the edge inscriptions, Mary and Ray Smith, who collect coins, decided that they would run out and grab a couple rolls of the newly minted coins in hopes of finding one of the special collector items. What they got turned out to be a much more interesting find.
On the latest faulty coin, both sides are smooth and are missing two of the most recognizable Americans ever, George Washington on the front and the Statue of Liberty on the back.
The coin in question has been set for authentication and Ron Guth, a coin authenticator with Professional Coin Grading Service of Newport Beach, Calif., has stated that he is confident that the coin is indeed an authentic George Washington coin. There is still no word from the Mint, but if this is proved to indeed be an authentic coin, the Smiths could be in store for a nice payday should they ever choose to unload the coin (assuming more of these oddities don't start to pop up in the market).
After the "Godless" coins were first discovered, one was sold pretty quickly on eBay for a nice $600 before prices cooled off as people realized the rare coins weren't that rare after all. Currently, you can pick one up on eBay for around $70.

I will bet, that the Mint mistakes are a marketing plan to finally get a dollar coin in broad circulation. I think it will work, at least short term. Though consider the possibilities, if ringer coins are in each batch minted of each dollar coin series. It becomes a national lottery, and the losers wont be wasted. they'll be spent...on lottery tickets?

My wife bought a couple rolls of the Washington Dollars and in one roll we found one to be without the gold luster that all the others have. The odd coin has the gold edges around the outside of it, but the front and back of the coin is a very dark silver look about it. Do you know anything about this error on these coins?
Thanks----J.R.
