Amercan Idol or Survivor: It's for real

More

Some of you may be bored with my American Idol fascination by now, and still others do not share my view that studying this show has any relation to the stock market. In either case I will continue to follow the Sanjaya saga as if I were following a possible acquisition.

Sanjaya survives again!? For those of us who were originally perplexed, along with Simon Cowell, as to how he could be voted into the top twelve -- Holy Cow Batman! -- Sanjaya is now in the top eleven.

When I first tried to rationalize his success I posted: American Idol: Are Indian call centers skewing the vote? Which created as much a stir as Sanjaya's success. One of my detractors was VR, who expressed his displessure with my post. I used his comments in the: Sunday Funnies: American Idol - Indian Idle, although he was not that funny. Out of respect for a contrary opinion and his right to have one I asked him if he would like to comment further and here is what he said:

"Good morning, Here are some of my thoughts:

"Looking at the comments posted from Mr. Liber's first article, it's amazing how this simple subject became a political debate about immigration issues, taxes, and capitalism. First of all, I agree with the few bloggers in setting the record straight that Sanjaya is American. Unless an individual is 100% Native American with a current tribe affiliation, every single person at one point in time (whether 200 years ago or 20), had ancestors who were immigrants to this country. These ancestors brought their rich, cultural traditions to the medley mix in the and began to achieve dreams with freedom. It's the very foundation of what this nation is built upon! That said, I think it's time that society realizes that the media and entertainment industries will naturally transform, with time, into representing all the unique demographics that compose the United States. Thanks for the opportunity! Looking forward to reading more, and seeing what happens in this year's American Idol competition. Thanks,

Vignesh Ramachandran "

Well said, sir. His sentiments are worthy of note and those who take the time to write civilized comments, even ones less than complimentary, are taken seriously by me.

Based on my thoughts on the behavior of markets I concluded that in the short run there would be numerous reasons that Sanjaya could "survive" a while:American Idol puzzle solved: Market Theory. And now, Simon suggesting he might quit the show if Sanjaya is the American Idol adds fuel to the fire, so I expect he might make it though another couple of weeks.

That's in the short run. In the long run, some level of sanity will prevail and Sanjaya will not be the next American Idol. Simon is just pumping the AI stock for now. I guess that is one big difference between Hollywood and Wall Street: On Wall Street it would be a clear conflict of interest. Not that it does not happen, it is just not supposed to -- just like Sanjaya was not supposed to make it this far in the competition.
