The Washington Post's Marc Fisher reported today on the travails of Jim Willard, who owns a couple of Dunkin' Donuts franchise locations in Maryland. Willard has operated his Potomac and Rockville locations kosher, to the pleasure of the local Jewish population. However, in a move of astounding shortsightedness, the corporation has informed Willard that he must offer the entire standard Dunkin' Donuts line, which includes non-kosher dishes such as a Sausage Egg Cheese Croissant and a Bacon Egg Cheese Croissant.Willard's are not the only DD locations that are kosher, according to the Dunkin' Donuts spokespeople. They estimate about 40 locations across the country abide by the dietary laws. Dunkin' Donuts defends its dictate by pointing to market research suggesting a full menu would increase unit sales. Headquarters is not without compassion, though; they are permitting Willard to keep kosher his DD outlet inside the Rockville Jewish Community Center.
The local Jewish community is protesting this move, circulating petitions in hopes of keeping DD in the fold.
Fisher also noted that over 20% of the nation's Krispy Kreme (NYSE:KKD) locations are kosher.

Is there anyone out there who has found a way of cutting through the malarkey and found a method of winning through this?

The franchsees can compromise by telling Dunkin Donuts that the only non kosher item they are willing to sell are the donut holes

the only reason it makes any sense for HD to push for all items is because of the ACLU. They love to bankrupt small business. They are doing it for a JEWish following which is even worse. The ACLU hates Jews and Christians. Follow the bucks and the ACLU, trust me there will a law suit out there. did you know that the ACLU gets tax payers money to file these suits. ask you congress person.

I am not Jewish, but I do believe that the DD's that keep Kosher should be permitted to do so. This gives those that do keep Kosher the joy of eating DD's like the rest of us. Is his stores loosing money? If not, then let them be.

This doesn't make any sense at all. Why should anyone have to sell anything that they don't want to sell?

I JUST DONT UNDERSTAND WHY ALOT OF OTHER FRANCHISES SUCH AS MCDONALDS AND BURGER KING ETC. DOESN'T DO THE SAME THING. NOT EVERYONE EATS PORK. I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO EAT PORK SINCE I WAS A CHILD, DUE TO HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE DEVELOPMENTS AS A TEEN. AND THE MOST THAT I CAN EAT NOW IS TURKEY AND CHICKEN, I MAY BE ABLE TO EAT BEEF SPARINGLY, BUT ALOT OF PEOPLE SHOULD WAKE UP AND SEE THAT OVER 40% OF THE UNITED STATES DOES NOT EAT PORK! THEY WILL BE ABLE TO GET ALOT MORE SALES AT THESE PLACES IF THEY WOULD JUST CONSIDER ADDING AS TURKEY SAUSAGE ANS BACON LINE JUST FOR PEOPLE IN THESE CASES.

With myself being Jewish, I am very glad that the DDs that are currently keeping Kosher are doing so because of respect for the JEwish Community. Maybe the Franchise holders are doing so because they themselves are also Jewish and they know a good thing when they see it. Besides, when a pastry is Kosher such as the donuts and such, it is also healthier because the oil that is used is much better for you than the other which has a high amount of transfat. Think about it and you will realize that foods being Kosher is just a way of saying that it is also healthier.

I think that if DD follows through on this and does not allow the franchisee to respect the communities they serve there should be a national boycot by all who follow Kosher or Halel dietary laws. Personally I do not follow these religious laws but, this shows total contempt by this corporation and they should be shown the same loyalty they are showing thier customers, none. I ate my last DD yesterday.

They can substitute the menu with a healthier soy/vege bacon and a soy/vege sausage and please everyone. It has been done in other places.

I UNFORTUNATELY LIVE IN AN ALL JEWISH COMMUNITY. THEY MOVED IN AND OVERWHELMED THE TOWN YEARS AGO. SINCE THEN EVERYTHING HAS GONE "KOSHER" AND GENTILES ARE TREATED LIKE AND CONSIDERED TRASH. IT HAS BECOME SO BAD THAT THEY DIVIDED THE TOWN IN HALF AND THE RESIDENTIAL ZONED AREA IS JEWISH AND THE NOW COMMERCIAL AREA IS GENTILES. THAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH JEWS. THEY HAVE THEIR OWN LAWS FOR THEMSELVES TO THE DETRIMENT OF EVERYONE ELSE. THEY LIVE IN AMERICA BUT ONCE THEY TAKE A PLACE OVER YOU WOULD THINK YOU ARE IN ISRAEL. THIS IS AMERICA NOT ISRAEL AND JEWS SHOULD NOT DEMAND THAT EVERYONE CATER TO THEIR RELIGIOUS OR CUSTOMARY NEEDS. TRULY THEY ARE NOT NICE PEOPLE AND THE MIDDLE EAST CONFLICT CLEARLY SHOWS THAT. WE SHOULD NOT BE SUPPORITNG JEWS AND THEIR EVERY WHIM.

If you think it would be disrespectful to the jewish community to force DD to sell all its products be it kosher or not, what do you think it is to the rest of us who are not jewish. I once walked in to a kosher DD waited in line for 15 minutes to eventually be told they dont offer what I wanted. It is stupid they should be forced to offer all they're products. If your jewish you should just ask for it to be kosher instead of just blaintfully just leave everyone else out.

Silliness has no bounds --- IF Dunkin Donuts can be made Kosher then do it, especially in an orthodox community. No one NEEDS sausage and bacon. I propose that we start a campaign to get DD's attention on this: National "DO NOT DONUT DAY" on May 1st, 2007 to protest this anti-semetic behavoir. Spread the word: May Day is not pay day
DO NOT DONUT DAY!!! ((it starts here...)) Shalom.

There used to be a deli in my home town and I remember an occasion about fifty years ago when I was in that store with my mother that someone got fired on the spot for having cut ham on the slicer marked Kosher (and Karl Ehmer wasn't even Jewish). What's the problem? If Jews and gentiles can co-exist in the same universe, Dunkin' Donuts is such little thing. Separate the Kosher from non-Kosher and reap the profits from both. The reason that Meyer Lanski was revered by the Italian's is because he was Jewish. It's not a difficult concept to grasp.

I thought the cardinal rule in sales was to sell what people wanted and or needed--otherwise pushing the sale is just spinning wheels.
What is the big deal on kosher anyway? Enough to get in a huff about?

I'm orthodox jewish myself, and while i am puzzled as to why DD should be forced to sell pork, I understand why many gentiles (as the gentleman above) feel overwhelmed by jews overrunning their town. But do you ever consider that many neighborhoods turn latino or afro american or chinese and suddenly all the signs are in foreign languages?
Don't be an antisemite, apply the same rules to everyone.
And if you don't like your neighborhood, then call a moving company!

What is wrong with people when something as inane as a donut can bring such vitriol against Jews to the fore. Regrettably, anti-semitism is alive and well on this message board -- I say let the marketplace determine the success or failure of a business. No one forces you to go to one Dunkin Donut shop or another. If you don't like what they offer, spend your money elsewhere.

I think the author of the article is irresponsible. The article is definitely written to enflame. Look at the reactions and think to yourself how the article could have been written so as not to increase tension in the community. The media and authors like this are avoiding their moral responsibilities. They believe they are objective, when they are not. "Conflict" is the way to get attention and readership - hey, it just worked on me.
