Anheuser-Busch (NYSE:BUD), obviously looking at industry stats that show beer sales in the U.S. declining (-2.2% in '05) as consumers switch to wine (+5.2%) and distilled liquor (+2.9%), has partnered with the Ku Soju Inc. of Laguna Hills, Ca., to distribute Ku Soju, a 48-proof Korean spirit. Ku Soju, distilled by Doosan of Seoul, South Korea, is made from sweet potatoes, which produces a vodka-like product with a low enough alcohol content that it can be sold by most vendors who carry a beer/wine license.
This is not Anheuser-Busch's first foray into liquor. For over a year it has been selling two other spirits, Jekyll & Hyde, through its Long Tail Libations, Inc. subsidiary. J&H are two spirits packaged together in complementary bottles. J tastes of berries, while K is flavored with anise.
Since Ku Soju is lower in alcohol, the brewer could market it a both as a lower-calorie alternative and a more socially responsible drink for those who must drive home.

Ku Soju is a Korean drink thats 1,300 years old made out of sweet potatoes? What did they make it out of 1,300 years ago? Aren't potatoes, sweet or not, native to the new world?

Socially responsible?! 48 proof means 24% alcohol content. Most American beer, including the weak AB products, is 5-8% alcohol. If they try to use the "socially responsible" angle in their advertising, it will backfire.

I live in St.Louis and get nothing but grief for drinking Miller products. Use to drink AB products but switched. Miller products taste better.
Budweiser/Headache, Busch/Blah, Bud Light/Yeah Right, Michelob Ultra/Ha Ha, Busch Light/Why. I'll give it to AB for Amber Bock and Tequiza. I still wish they had Michelob Dark and Elephant Red. Must of been because St.Louisian's could not see beyond Bud and Busch. Why are people in St. Louis so loyal to AB? They have done nothing for the city of St.Louis. Ruined the Cardinals after Auggie Busch past away. Destroyed the farm system. AB products are cheaper pretty much everywhere else but here. Why is that? I'm glad Miller got the rights to sell their products for the Blues. Maybe that will get other people to taste other beers which are as good if not better than AB's.

That entire piece made no sense.
1)Yes, sweet potatos are from the New World so how can Korea have been making this sweet potato based beverage for 1300 years?
2) If Ku Soju is a 48-proof Korean spirit how can it have a "low enough alcohol content that it can be sold by most vendors who carry a beer/wine license?" I don't drink but isn't 48 proof kinda high? I thought beer and wine were generally under 10%-15% or 5 to 7 proof!
"Since Ku Soju is lower in alcohol, the brewer could market it... as a more socially responsible drink for those who must drive home." Yeah, at 48 proof, lower in alcohol than grain alcohol maybe.
3) Anheuser-Busch has been selling two alcoholic beverages called Jekyll & Hyde. The article then states, "J&H are two spirits packaged together in complementary bottles. J tastes of berries, while K is flavored with anise. What does "K" refer to, I mean what the heck is "K"? I thought "J" is for Jekyl, H is for Hyde. So what's with the "K"?

I am a beer expert. I weight 625 pounds and drink a case of beer a day. I look forward to this new one as a case no longer gets me drunk and I'd like to get drunk again. If the boys in St. Louis would send me a few cases free (maybe with a few boxes of sweet potatoe chips too) then if I like it I might alone keep them in business.

I agree. The article alone is as far from English as these sweet potatoes. I wasn't aware of the necessity to use A in this sentence (could market it a both as a) sort of looks as bad as a double negative, Aye?
