Pfizer is up off the mat -- now is the time to move

More

No doubt by now you have heard the good news regarding Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE) and the shield it has in place for Celebrex. You can get some more insight on that by reading Douglas McIntyre's post.

Now the time is ripe for Pfizer to do something powerful. If it can accomplish one or two block buster product releases before mid-year, it'll be off to the races once again. In pursuit of that goal, Pfizer has a large stable of potential ground shakers in development. Here's an encapsulated view of what Pfizer has going right now in R&D:

I counted 49 formulations that Pfizer has in PHASE I of development. Of those compounds, ten are intended cancer treatments, eight are for inflammation and / or pain, including arthritis, 11 are directed towards cardiology, metabolic and endocrine conditions. Pfizer also has six compounds in PHASE I that are indicated for infectious diseases. Phase one drug testing focuses on compound safety rather than drug effectiveness.

In PHASE II of development, Pfizer is showing strong with 32 compounds. There are six compounds that are indicated for the treatment of cancer. Arthritis and heart medications populate the list well also. Phase II testing focuses on dosages and delivery methods and how those relate to drug effectiveness.

Pfizer's PHASE III list is tight but impressive with four compounds directed towards cancer, one towards obesity, one towards epilepsy, one indicated for fibromyalgia and an indicated treatment for malaria. Pfizer has three new registered compounds with the indications towards HIV, bladder control and dermatology. Phase III drug testing is the final stage of human clinical drug trials and seeks to confirm earlier data utilizing a much larger group of test subjects. Phase III data is then used to complete the approval process. Registered compounds are those drugs that have been submitted to regulators for final clinical proof and approval.

Recently approved compounds on the Pfizer marketing list include: Exubera, targeted towards diabetes; Eraxis for fungal infections; Chantix, indicated for smoking cessation and Sutent, indicated for cancer treatment. Approved drugs have been released by regulators for marketing.

So, as you can see, Pfizer has been hard at work. Now would be a good time to analyze its financial picture to determine if you want to get in there. By all indications I believe that Pfizer will have an impressive year as far as product release goes. Remember also that Pfizer made some very deep staff cuts a couple months ago and that should play very well in the profitability numbers.
