Okay now, I've kept quiet on the subject thus far even though it has given me cause to question the validity of music appreciation and of "reality" television in general. This week, however, I find it impossible to keep my thoughts to myself. American Idol was blessed this week to be graced by the presence of Tony Bennett, the man who put the "B" in ballad and an icon of music history who is probably as responsible for as many loving moments as Issac Hayes.
For me, it shapes up like this: I don't care what Sanjaya Malakar looks like, how he dresses, how his hair is done, where he comes from, his race, religion, sexual leanings, culture or favorite muppet. The sad fact of the matter is that by now the marginally talented kid has no business occupying a spot on a stage where he could even consider the possibility of looking a man like Tony Bennett in the eye. At this point in the game it's wrong, just plain dead wrong.
You may play games with this kid if that's what you'd like to do America but think for a moment about the message you're sending to the world with your votes. You have no taste. You have no guts. You'd rather opt for humorous shenanigans over an exercise of honest conscience. You have taken the futures of at least a half dozen seriously talented people and tossed them at the dumpster because you thought it an appropriate joke to vote against what you knew to be the truth. Jim Cramer must be proud of you.
My greatest sorrow with this situation is the recollection of the passing of that other divine crooner Frank Sinatra. I really wish that Frank was still around to have witnessed this all going on. The reason being, Frank and his Rat Pack would have put an early end to all this nonsense without America being any the wiser. This is no longer a case of bad judgment. It has become a inexcusable display of gut twisting bad taste. Please America restore my faith in your recognition of talent. Reaffirm the proposition of "May the best one win".

Our family happens to love Sanjaya and we think he is a clean-cut, adorable young man. He reminds me of the 60's Teen Idols that I loved, like Bobby Rydell and Frankie Avalon. They weren't "great singers" but they were fun. Sanjaya will continue to be a singer (along with his pretty sister, I'm sure).

I think for Stern to try to sabatoge American Idol due to his jealousy is wrong. He is nothing but trash to begin with, and just catching a gleamse of his show was too sickening for me. Sanjaya needs to be gone. He has no talent & can not sing. I feel sorry for the ones to deserve to be on the show, but have gotten voted off. I think the judges show have more rights in saying who stays and who goes.
This show has turned into a popularity contest instead of a singing competition. And that's really sad.....

maybe we all need to fight back and have a VOTE FOR THE BEST ... My top 5 are Jordin,Melinda,Blake,Chris, and Lakisha We need to get the people that are behind these folks to vote !!! And American Idol needs to have something on their website that tells you the number and what their numbers are to vote for your fave. If you miss the show but you want to keep your fave in that info should be available. I missed my fave's numbers and couldn't find the number to vote last night =( I also think maybe it is time for American Idol judges to control 1/2 of the votes. That way a group like vote for the worst wouldn't have so much power.

Sanjaya performed very well last night. Regarding your commentary he does not deserve to be on with Mr. Bennett, Tony liked the boy just fine. I love reading opinions of folks who try to prove their point by insulting another's.
I hope he stays on the show for many weeks to come. Like he said last night, "Welcome to the Universe of Sanjaya".

He is a good performer and like britney and madonna and janet who all sold record number of hits performance counts for a lot. I feel bad for Sanjaya personally because it is not his fault that people have used him like this and people degrading him is only increasing his popularity. I was not even watching the show this year because this years show is not as diverse an amazing in talent as last seasons. I was not watching until I read all of this controversy over this Sanjaya singer and then was like let me see what everyone is talking about. Unfortunately by everyone complaining of how much you can stand Sanjaya you are making him a household name. The only other one I hear about is Jordin sparks. Seriously if you want him booted stop talking about him on ever news station and network. I mean is that rocket science???

ystday was th frst time i watched IDol.thats just coz of media hype on sanjaya isuue. and i did like that little kid.i dnt even have a landline phn. still i called 30 times from my cellphone to vote for him.If sanjaya wud have been a European american none of these media ppl showed this much interest.and i wud have never watched american idol either. so let u ppl write/speak more about sanjaya, more ppl happen to watch the show. producers get more money. atlast they sack sanjaya either by fixing, or just by saying 'for the future of american white supremists ' we r kicking a brown man out.

I'm from Mr. Bennett's era and I believe he would not say he thought Sanjaya could sing if he didn't believe it. I also think his comment about Sanjaya "daring to be different" was right on the money - BOY, did he get noticed! He is just 17 years old; in 5-10 years his voice will catch up to his personality - give him a break!

Seriously, who really cares about Sanjaya? He has no talent and he will NOT win American Idol. But lets get on to more important things...Like how HOT Sanjaya's sister is. Have you seen her? She used to work at Hooters. You can see her Hooters pictures right here:

Tony Bennett's comments on Sanjaya: "I really think your terrific", "He has a sense of humor", "He sings very well", "What I like about him is that he dares to be different". These comments comes from the horse's mouth. I would believe Tony Bennett before anyone else. He is after all one of the greatest professional singers of all time and he was sincere when he said it. After hearing his comments I'm convinced that Sanjaya can sing (I've always thought he could)and very entertaining. It is now clear to me that all these negative comments about him is due probably to prejudice. These anti-Sanjaya people probably thought they weren't prejudice but upon reading many of the negative comments I could only conclude that they are. Sanjaya, a 17-year old kid has brought out the prejudice person in them. These comments are really uncalled for. If you don't like this kid don't vote for him. Its that simple. Vote for the person you like. Note "the person you like" - i did not say vote for the best singer. At this stage of the contest people are no longer voting for the best singer. Most of us have already decide on who we want to vote. Whether you could admit it or not you will be voting for the person you like not the best singer. Do you think Jordin Spark's family, friends, and acquaintances will vote for Melinda Doolittle because she is the better singer and vice versa? Not a change. So those who blame Sanjaya whenever one of the contestants end up going home lacks sportsmanship. Don't take it too seriously otherwise you will be miserable the entire season or at least until Sanjaya get voted out - after that you probably will find another contestant to bash. Enjoy the show and stop the hatred folks. It will not persuade the Fanjaya's to stop voting for him. They have already made up their mind on who to vote for just as you have.

Sanjaya has zero talent! He is an absolute embarassement to the world by being in the top 10!!
I've got two words: Sanjaya SUCKS!!!
Tony Bennett's advice should have been..."Pack up your bags and get the hell outta Dodge kid!...you suck!"

Ray, I do think that little Sanjaya is cute, adorable, his personality is picking up and coming through. He's young, being up on a stage and having personality will be aquired by him, in time.
I agree with Tony Bennett. Sanjaya is terrific, I'm sure he has a great since of humor, and I'll say that he 'sings very well' even. Better, in fact, than some of my friends. That being said, he's not the most tallented, the best singer, the one with the best personality in the competition and others are being voted off that should have stayed, at least for another week.
Maybe in the beginning, those offering contracts to the second runner up of the competition, outside of AI, were basing that contract on what they believe was an actual runner up and that America actually loved the person. I think the people, who are offering these contracts, are savvy enough to understand that yes, some people will vote solely on personality, looks and the fact that so many people are tone deaf, but they will also factor in those sites which are voting for the worst.
IF those sites win, and AI is stuck with the worst, the most that is going to happen is AI still agrees to pay someone whose record sales aren't going to come up to a profit. At this point, big deal.
Nothing says they can't select another person(s) from the top 10 and promote them and make back a profit AND pay for any losses for the winner sales. It IS a win win situation for AI.
I don't understand why these people on those other sites who want America to vote for the worst person doesn't understand this.
*wilma guidry- Again, I think he will be much better in the future, but it's not about what he's gonna be, but what he is now. Right now, he's a cute, sweet kid who sings well, not fantastic. He's very pitchy, or just off key altogether. There are others there who are better all the way around and are getting better at a faster rate. Maybe he just needs to come back next year and he'll finally be the winner who is actually 'a winner'. I don't think there's enough time remaining for that to be the case.
* james wagnor- I think there are more people out there than not, who are voting for this kid based on personality and looks than for his actual talent. I think very little of it has to do with 'voting out the brown man'. Unfortunately, there will be those who will do this, but if you want to pull the 'race card' I'm sure there are many out there who don't vote for the white person, because they aren't brown.
I vote for who -I- think is best and it's NOT based on race.
This year, for me, I think the top two should be Melinda and Lakisha, in that order. They do better than just 'sing very well'. Melinda sings fantastic, I think Lakisha is a close second.

People stop voting for the cute little boy with hardly any talent at this point. Vote for the vocal range, difficulty of song choice These people that vote don't have a clue as to hearing a great voice when heard.
The young girls are voting for Sanjaya because they see him as some charming good looking cute little boy. Thats it!! He is not in the same league as Melinda Doolittle, Jordin, or Lakisha. Not even close.
It's almost like taking your 10 year old boy who plays in a tee-ball league, then suddenly throwing him into a hardball little league with 18 year old kids!
He is going to get his ass kicked in no time. Similarly, Sanjaya has been getting beat down every week. America knows that.
SAY NO TO SANJAYA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The show is going to lose it's credibility with CRAP like this!
The judges need to make a bold statement next week, and tell the world on national television that Sanjaya needs to go home. He has no vocal range.
I would love to hear him sing any of the songs that these black female artists are belting out.
