Don Imus' boorish behavior would have gotten him fired long ago if he were in any other line of work.
After a firestorm of controversy, CBS Corp.(NYSE: CBS) and General Electric Co.'s (NYSE: GE) MSNBC yesterday decided to suspend the controversial radio host for two weeks for making racially insensitive comments about the Rutgers University women's basketball team.
What would happen to someone at your office who like Imus used the phrase "nappy-headed ho's?" Would people complain? Would the boss talk to them? Would they have a chat with human resources? If they continually showed that type of attitude, would they be fired?
Imus is lucky that he works in the media.
He tried to mend fences by apologizing at an almost Bill Clinton-like rate. He's apologized to the team, apologized to the Rev. Al Sharpton and would probably apologize to any African-American he meets on the street.
This is a pretty big deal.
Media and political bigshots are regular guests on "Imus in the Morning." Publishers send their top authors there to flog their books. It's kind of amusing that these people love Imus and hate his rival Howard Stern when the only difference between them is that Stern actually is witty.
Along with Stern, Imus has inspired a generation of shock jocks and talk show hosts who think that they can say whatever they want, whenever they want on the air. But instead of being provocative, most of them just sound boorish.
Imus is vowing to change the "tenor" of the show. I guess he deserves another chance, or is it the fifth one? I'm not sure.

Stop crying over this! we are so worried about something so small as the comments he made that it overshadows us people are getting killed every day! and no one is more prejudiced then are own government. why does there have to be a black side and a white and why is it if this was about white people it would have been over looked! what he said was not wrong at all its 2007. we are still stuck in the dark ages black people need to stand on there own and stop crying prejudice!

What would happen if "someone in my office said something like this?"
"Absolutely, positively nothing" if my line of work is "urban shock jock", "millionaire rapper", or "black comedian". Derogatory comments such as Imus' are par for the course in those professions, 24/7/365.
So when are Fifty Cent and dozens of other rappers and comedians scheduled to show up and apologize on Sharpton's program, prior to Sharpton calling for boycotts of them and their sponsors?

Imus should stick to his "schtick" and be the same abusive shock jock/entertainer he always has been. Thats his persona- its why his listeners listen to him. There is no difference between him and Chris Rock, Howard Stern, Carlos Mencia etc... Unfortunatley we only think its cool for a minority to bust on the majority but its bigotry if the majority busts on the minority. WTF? Everyone has the right to speak their mind even if its garbage. To be offended and demand an appoligy only gives substance to nothingness.
Everyone carries some degree of racism. If you get mad at an "Imus" you're really mad at your own internal bigotry. Discource is good and proper even if that discource is painful and insulting to hear. But it still needs to be heard.
Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are grandstanders who "punk" the emotions of the black community they are suppose to represent.

Imus did not get off easy. They are taking two weeks to ease him to the front door and the next day they are going to kick him out the door. Take that to the bank.

Has Imus said anything more "racist" than the constant filth that pours from the mouths of the "Rappers" and "Hip-Hop" artists on radio and TV

Pretty soon we will need to have attorneys filter everything we say so we don't get sued or lose our jobs.

Quit being so sensitive about things. Imus, you need to grow a pair and quit apologizing to these "shakedown artists". They are the true racists. Oh my and that woman from Rutgers-- she is worse than Ray Nagar. "These girls will be scarred for life"- that is the biggest line of BS I have ever heard. I understand now why I am starting to hate this country more and more each day. I am glad I still live in the South-- our feelings arent hurt that easily.

Got off easy? What planet are you on, moron? Rather than attacking Imus let's attack the rappers my daughter listens to when she is not under my direct supervision. Every day these african american rappers call themselves, "Niggers, Thugs, Killers, Robbers, Pimps, Mack Daddies, Gang Bangers & Drug Dealers to name a few". They refer to women as, "Ho's, Whores, Skanks, Big Booty Bitches, Skanks, Fuck Toys, Anal Whores." Women's breasts are called, "Lumps, mountians, tittie"... It goes on and on and on.
Give me a break... Over 3,000 soldiers have been murdered in Iraq. Near my home in Brownsburg, Indiana 10 famalies are now homeless because of a tornado that ripped apart their homes. Global warming is going to kill us all.
Pick your fights people. Get real and get over it. I am not suggesting racism and hate should be tolerated. I am suggesting attack rap rather than some dumb poor white slob.

people really have to step back think before you make a conclusion. I don't hear Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson apologizing to the gentlemen they screwed from Duke. Why do companies give in to these 2 people that just like to see themselves speak?

Shame on Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson! Talk about racists! Have they looked in the mirror lately? I am sooo sick of what has become reverse discrimination in this country. I too feel that maybe we need a "list" of rules of what is permissible to say and what isn't about African Americans...they should look to people of their own race and what they say about themselves before they start casting stones our way and expect us not to mimic their language and "lingo". I am not saying what Imus said was appropriate, but it was taken WAY out of context...he is an equal opportunity insulter. His show is comedy/political...so I ask do we go after Chris Rock and all those other comedians who talk derogatorily about people? I've listened to Imus since the 1970's and enjoyed his show...he is outrageous at times, but he always got my day off to a good start and laugh...I'll miss him. I am so angry at the way he was made to leave and I am disappointed that some of the people whom he supported kept silent and slunk away. Shame on them! This country has to be careful and watch what we are allowing. He was sorry...he apologized...he should have been able to move on. These extremist are getting out of hand.

They were wrong to fire Don Imus! Did you ever hear "sticks and stones"? Even children are taught that words can not hurt you. Give me a break! The man did more good than the protesters ever thought of doing. I am disappointed in the networks!

I'm not condoning what Imus said,it was wrong, but cbs took the easy way out, and to Rev. Sharpton,Rev. Jackson and to the blog that said "if you have ugly inside it comes out" if you are so righteous, WHERE is the forgiveness?

The problem is not Don Imus, there is a much larger problem that black leaders cannot address. The thug, hip hop (so-called)culture that blacks embrace. Imus is an easy publicity gathering event for the two shysters, Sharptop and Jackson. WHy dont they address where those words came from , thug culture. Every rap song has some form of sexism, racist, misogyny. Has anyone seen Dave Chapelles act? He act is based on race and people think he's a genius.
CBS should be ashamed for caving in, should we just gag all enetrtainment?
