Farmland is more expensive than ever before thanks to a hunger for ethanol and simpler living. U.S. farmland values increased more than 200% between 1987 and 2006, from an average of $599 per acre to $1,900 per acre. The most expensive farmland is still in the Northeast, California, Florida, and Virginia, where prices followed the trends of the last real estate boom. Rhode Island's farmland, the priciest in the country, averaged $12,500 per acre as of January, 2006, up 11.6% from the year before.
