Don Imus is now officially unemployed having been dumped from CBS Corp. (NYSE: CBS) after losing his television gig on Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) and General Electric Co.'s (NYSE: GE) joint venture, MSNBC.
My bet is that Imus will land another talk radio gig. The medium is starved for advertisers and needs all of the stars it can get -- even controversial ones. Plus, there are far bigger clowns on talk radio than Imus. But before he makes his triumphant return on either Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. (NASDAQ: SIRI) or XM Satellite Holdings Radio Inc. (NASDAQ: XMSR), Imus fans need to take a chill pill.
Imus got what he deserved. He didn't just cross a line, he pole-vaulted it. Yeah, people like the Reverends Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton aren't without considerable faults of their own. AOL's Jason Whitlock, an African American, finds the pair embarrassing and recently wrote: "I'm calling for Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, the president and vice president of Black America, to step down."
This has nothing to do with political correctness -- which I detest as much as anybody -- either. There's just no way to defend what Imus said and how he said it. Sure, black comedians say similar sorts of things and get huge laughs. But context is everything.
The message is just as important as the messenger in this case. Free speech is never totally free. You can say quite a bit without fear of prosecution but you can't say anything you want. Some things are better left unsaid and unfortunately for Imus, he said them.
When I defended Rosie O'Donnell's right to spout idiotic conspiracy theories, on The View, I argued that Imus hadn't suffered any consequences for his rantings. A reader named Ahmed Zahmed today reminded me that my prediction was proved wrong.
"Now who's got the double-standard???," he wrote. "FIRE Rosie!!"
Still, that doesn't make what Imus did any less wrong or mean that O'Donnell should lose her job. As I said before, the show is called "The View" and she has the right to express hers. The anti-Rosie campaigns make no sense, If Conservatives want to stop O'Donnell, all they have to do is ignore her. The more they complain about her, the more people think she may be onto something.
Some people have asked how Imus can be unemployed while O'Donnell still has a job.
I don't have an answer to that question.
But I'm going to end this post with a prediction that Imus will be gracing the nation's airwaves at some point in the not-too-distant future. Of this, I am as sure as I was of my last prediction about the radio host.
So don't take it to the bank.

You know, the more I think about this thing, the more I believe that some good will come from it. I think Sharpton and Jackson have really overdone it this time. When black people get angry and want to protest, they burn and loot each others homes and businesses. When white people get angry and want to protest, they vote. It takes a lot longer to see results, but I believe the "Dynamic Duo's" days are numbered.

Actually, I don't think that white liberals care the least bit what Snoop or Comedy Central says or does. Their ultimate goal is to shut down conservative talk radio and the liberal Don Imus was just a sacrifical lamb to see how to go about it. The whole thing smells of the Clintons and Moveon.Org.

I don,t think Imus should have been fired . I think he should have been given a second chance to at least redeem himself. It seems that double standards are being used in this case.

i don't always agree with imus, & as a matter of fact, when he starts talking stupidly I boycott him. for many years I got to see black vs. white racism up close & in my face. so when the imus thing happened & sharpton & jackson got involved, i followed to see what would happen. so i wasn't surprised when imus got fired from both his jobs, he only tried to make a joke, so what, it was in poor taste, not worse than the stuff i was forced to listen to in my last job, i had to listen to black vs. white racism on kiss fm, nothing worth getting fired for so i was kind of surprised when imus was fired. for the fun of it I went to ask.com &asked about al sharpton because i knew about tawana brawley, crown heights, & found out a lot more from the sharpton bio that surprised me. why sharpton & jackson get the tv time they get being the bigots they are is beyond me furthermore, why they are still walking the streets is even more amazing because they both should be in jail for life or shouldhave been executed for the murders they've incited & they hide behind a title reverend. some reverunds huh? wheree's the love your neighbor as yourself? it ain't in their churches. no wonder we have the problems we have in the us

To be fair...every entertainer that has ever made any kind of degrading comment should not be allowed on-air. For example if an artist has even one song that gets censored for any reason, ALL song by that artist should not be played. Any actor that has ever told an offensive joke should not be allowed to be shown on tv or movies. Any public speaker(Sharpton, Jackson) that has offended someone in any way should not be allowed to be in public or speak.

Frankly, I cannot believe that Mr. Imus's show has been cancelled. It's so ridiculous!! He is the highlight of my morning and, I can't fathom the fact that I will no longer be able to enjoy his show. If a black man had said this, NOTHING would be done. Look at all of the people who have said "offensive" things and an apology has been enough. Part of Mr. Imus's charm is the fact you don't know what he's going to say and, he's honest and says what's on his mind. Also, it is partially comedy, remember that? GIVE HIM A BREAK...What in the world are you people thinking!! Giving in to the sponsors and Sharpton? Thought MSNBC had more guts than that to stand behind their people. Obviously not. I will continue to stand up for Mr. Imus. He does wonderful things for kids with cancer, his wife does great work getting toxins out of hospitals and the list goes on. Shame on you. I would appreciate my comments being forwarded to Mr. Imus as I want him to know that all people are not so shallow.

No one is condoning what Don Imus said;however, I don't feel that the punishment fits the crime. He has other segments on the show that are helpful to others, especially children with cancer. He also promotes new books and music, and has intelligent conversations with politicians. As for him being a liberal I have heard him twice say he was a registered republican. After all has everyone forgotten he is backing John McCain!! I think suspension and a hefty fine would have woken Imus up to what he had done. I feel that he is sincerely sorry and deserves another chance even though he makes a lot of commnents, hopefully he will have learned from this. After all he is intelligent and he lets his guests answer unlike O'Reilly and Hannity. I don't think he is really a racist but went over the line with his fooling around. By the way, where were all the moralists all these years when he was fooling around. How come all of a sudden CBS and MSNBC are so morally outraged?? Maybe if they had threatend him sooner this wouldn't have happened. After all, it sounds like he had their blessing all along!!

the thing that bothers me so much about this Imus comment is I dont think that people whom supports this guy are aware of the fact that all people of color are fed-up with the name calling that has long been spouted out of the mouth of white, white people just dont get it,first of all, nigger, wet-back, towelhead, chink, and all of the other insulting names uttered were invented by white people, what bothers me more is that they dont see the hurt and damage that those words and names cause, it needs to stop.I'm a firm belever that any one that uses themshould be fired if their in a job that, the public has access to I dont care what color they are.The world and it's people need to really, come to know more about each others culture and then maybe we'll all stop and think before we say the derogatory things that we do.

to answer the person that, mentioned the oj simpson trail, blacks celebrated because, we were glad to see for once a black got off, I dont know what in that case, or whom murdered nicole and ron, and I'm very sorry that, they had to loose their lives, and this may sound cold, and un caring but, there were a lot of blacks that just loved the idea that, for once whites got to feel what we had long felt, when some guilty white got off for murdering a black person, I know it hurt and any loss of life should hurt but, now white people now know what we have long felt, and I can ask the question where were all of these same white people that, talked about how wrong it was for him to get away with murder, when we all saw all over the world, when Rodney King was beaten by those white cops that, got off I bet that a lot of you were cheering that as well, so dont get mad because you got to taste the medicine that you have long ministered.blacks and all people of color have long endured your bullshit so get off of it the real is we all need to stop the crap that we put outbecause all races talk about the other as if it has the the market cornered on rightousness we dont because we're all messed up and need to get out shit together.

Very stupid and insensitive comments...deserves to be punished...but not to be a whipping boy for the bottoming-out of pop culture..it is time to also go after radio DJs with the sex/smut talk, the TV "reality" shows with the same garbage, the hip-hop, rap, teen rock groups with the language, anti-woman, rascist, homophobe lyrics...they are all Imus and thet all deserve to be canned....tell Hilary to give back the $$ she got from the producers of Ludocris..if it is bad for one it is bad for all...otherwise this was just another chance for Al Sharpton to keep his name in the paper and nothing will really change

I wonder how many people know that it was a liberal watchdog group, Media Matters, who made Imus' comments an issue? They monitor all broadcasts seeking un-PC remarks. They found some and passed them along to parties they were certain would stir the pot until it boiled. The two clergymen least qualified to serve as moral arbiters were enlisted to extort the sponsors and corporate masters of NBC and CBS. They succeeded. And this in my viwer is FAR MORE reprehensible then the crude racist joke uttered by Imus, whose career has been spent trying to boost the careers of minority politicians.

Just listen to how his racist comments were made, there was no laughter before or after his comment. It just rolled out, it was deep inside him. When Howard Stern makes a remark about any race there is laughter. As a seasoned professional he should have know better. He represents tons of advertisers. There are standards, this is why they pulled out. If your not professional at any job YOUR FIRED>

Dr. Benjamin Chavis, of The Hip-Hop Summit Action Network was quoted saying, “Comparing Don Imus' language with hip-hop artists' poetic expression is misguided and inaccurate and feeds into a mindset that can be a catalyst for unwarranted, rampant censorship."
Wow, poetic expressions ranging from bitches to hoes, fuck the police, bragging about how much money their grill cost, pessimistic slang terms, repeatedly saying the taboo term nigger or nigga, and subjecting and objectifying women in lyrics and in videos—well Dr. Chavis, very cosmopolitan.
