In a move that is down-right American, Sears stores (NYSE: SHLD) are going the extra mile for our men and women in the armed forces. It was reported to me that not only is Sears gladly meeting the legal requirements to hold open and available the jobs temporarily vacated by individuals who are called into active military service but they are proud to go above and beyond the call of duty. Sears is voluntarily paying the difference in salary and maintaining all benefits including medical insurance and bonus programs for a period of up to two years for their reservist employees who are called into service. I myself will happily drive ten miles beyond a Wal-Mart store (NYSE: WMT) and joyfully risk paying slightly higher prices to deal with a company that treats my soldiers like that.
My tip source informed me that she contacted Sears customer service by email regarding the reservist support program to determine that the story was true and to voice her support of such a program. She received a timely reply from Sears, the content of which was as follows:
Dear Customer:
Thank you for contacting Sears.
The information is factual. We appreciate your positive feedback. Sears regards service to our country as one of greatest sacrifices our young men and women can make. We are happy to do our part to lessen the burden they bear at this time.

SEARS? Yeah that’s right, SEARS!
Found out something today that I truly didn’t know,
About the homegrown treat meant of GI Jane & GI Joe,
Unlike requesting coffee from billion dollar Starbucks,
As soldiers in Iraq were informed it was just tough luck.
No wonder fighting service men and women are nervous,
1 was even denied their job from the U.S. Postal Service,
By our law, employers are to hold jobs but nothing more,
When Americans are called to participate overseas in war.
However, how many times do we find this is not the case?
Shot at in uniform, coming home to get slapped in the face,
There is very little done in Washington about the disgrace,
While record amounts are spent in the 2008 presidential race.
Hoo-ray! There is United States Company quiet as it is kept,
We have a retail corporation, who will not allow them to forget,
Sacrifice is not a word spoken without merit like in politics,
When this store gets behind you they put everything in the mix.
What a shame, in this country we have to search near and far,
You would think it should be Wal-Mart, as rich as they are,
Ha! They’d rather build up then tear down a brand new store,
Only the owners, not employees, are supposed to earn more.
Shoppers, buckle your seat belts, firmly hold on to your hats,
Since I’m about to tell you where these patriotic stores are at,
Open wide the eyes, put on glasses, take a Q-tip to your ears,
The retailer I am talking about is the old standby AKA, Sears.
Surely, the greatest sacrifice our young men and women can make,
Is on the battlefield so Sears gives while others will only take,
Happy to do our part to lessen the burden they bear at this time,
It’s their motto & why Sears always has the 1st look at my dime.
Paying the difference in salaries while maintaining all benefits,
Medical insurance and bonus programs, no this is not a misprint,
Wow! For all called up reservist employees for up to two years.
I’ll shop somewhere else only if what I want isn’t sold @ Sears.

I'll make the extra effort to shop Sears, too. Or at least their Lands' End division, and I'll make an effort to find things to buy in the Lands' End catalog. I already tend to specify Kenmore refrigerators for the laboratory where I work, but now I'll make an extra effort to buy Kenmore even if another brand would do.

Too bad Sears don't try half as hard to treat their customers as well. I will also try to spend more at Sears since this is a wonderful thing for them to do. Maybe they are back on track to the Sears they used to be. Let's all hope so.

Hello, I am Sears employee. Yes, Sears isn't the Sears it used to be. It is better then it used to be and will keep getting better. I do not agree with all the changes but for Sears to make it in this new global economy they had to make the changes to be a better store for its loyal customers. K-mart is also Changing now that the two companies are one. I served in the US Army and so did my Dad we thank Sears for all they are doing to help our Men and Women in the military. I ask every American to Pray for our Soldiers to end this WAR on Terror and to bring peace all over the world.
God bless America, in GOD we must trust one Nation under GOD!!!
