A New Hampshire couple have taken refuge in their home as an income tax 'protest.' After reading Zac Bissonnette's take, I just couldn't leave this story alone. Here's my response:
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Anarchy,
Pardon me for interrupting your solitude but it appears to me that you may have made a grave error. I'm expecting that you'll be able to read this unless your Internet connection has been severed from the federally protected communication streams. At this time I must ask you if you have ever read the American Constitution. Unless I'm mistaken, Congress empowered the government to collect income tax quite some time ago.
I'm hoping that you have surrendered your vehicles by now. Being that you have no use for federally subsidized roads, I suspect that you plan to walk for the rest of your lives. Please be sure that you take your gas masks along on your walks because the EPA has indicated that it is no longer willing to assure that you have clean air to breathe. When you get home from walking you may wish to consider twice if you'll have a drink of water due to the fact that you have implied that safe water standards no longer apply to you. The government of the United States shall honor your desire to be unprotected in the matters of breathing and hydration.
In advance of your starvation, I'd like to thank you for surrendering all the food you have, with the exception of those things which are not USDA inspected. I apologize that you have little left to eat but the USDA has indicated that it is no longer interested in protecting your digestion. Additionally, every inspector of every product at every port, air terminal and border crossing has made it clear that they will no longer work for you. It is a shame that you shall soon be naked, diseased and starved to death but all federal services rendered in your name have been suspended as you requested.
Please inform us as soon as possible where it is that you shall be moving to. We, as a nation have no desire to force you to remain within our borders. It is possible that some territory remains near the Arctic Circle where you may reside untaxed for the remainder of your lives. We suggest that you go there as soon as possible. Please do be careful as you walk naked, hungry and without personal security. We would hate for some nasty international criminal to make prey of you. Rest assured that there is a large pool of payroll tax paying individuals who will be more than happy to cast lots for your home. Now, please make a hasty exit you deadbeats. We honestly don't want to keep you here.
Best Regards,
Gary E. Sattler

Gary,
There is no law that requires wage earners to pay taxes. Only corporate income tax is required by law. So I think you need to read the constitution.

Income Taxes are legal. Check out the 16th Amendment. Ive paid income tax, my parents did, my kids do, my brothers and sisters pay taxes.
My issue with taxes is that workers pay by far the highest tax rates. They pay FICA -- 15% for self employed -- plus income taxes -- and state income taxes. It can easily go to 40% of workers gross can go to taxes/
But unearned income pays very little tax - the TOP rate for unearned income is 15%m and no FICA.
Wake up workers.

Most importantly, our taxes gets squandered by the government on wars all over the world. The expenses that the author described in his response (roads, clean water, air) are only a tiny fraction of all the tax money.
I would have no problem paying a REASONABLE tax to this government if I only had a little control over how these money are spent.

number 3 by Oleg has the only brain on this day april 27th unfortunately. It is nice to know that the sarcastic liberal socialists would like to see a communist style soialism take place in America to satisfy their hate for living as slaves under their own repressive economic governance. Although is is rather sad to see people reach for safety when they should be embraceing freedom.

Lets get real here for a moment, No one likes paying taxes, because we as a people see everyday how wasteful our government has became. I for one wish that more people would get involved in the political process, i mean every aspect of it from voting to watching everyday how your congressman votes to spend the taxpayers money, how he votes to change laws, how he justifies himself ethically as a servant of the people and not just himself. Does he prove himself worthy of another term or should he be removed. Voters should their congressman accountable everyday for their actions of what they were sent there to do. Doesn't matter if your Democrat, Republican, Independent, what matters is do you take time to study the candidates and choose the one most fitted for the position. Get out of this Democrat, Republican party line issue and start voting for a candidate with real honor and common sense. Now this is showing your patriotism. Who knows it might save us some money in the long run. Comments welcome.

Taxation without repersentation...gave us A new government, and a new Constitution...lets remember its only as good as those who are (we the People).
Those who can't figure out whats wronge may blog about many who disagree with our fed.mandates,
but if they have been found lacking and do not benefit the whole, then why sit in your tower and say leave here, because I don't smell the stinch yet ! we think you protest at your peril, when you lack knowledge in knowing when to watch the watchdawgs.

I sure WISH the top rate on unearned income was 15%, but it's way more than that - except for long term capital gains. Thoise of us who have significant interest income, pensions or rental income pay at the same tax rates as any other income. And by the time my state collects it's 9% and the feds get 28% of each extra dollar I get to keep less than 2/3rds - which might be OK if the government spent the money a bit wiser..

Mr. Sattler,
I'm confused on your points levied towards the new Hampshire couple.
Are you saying that they should be happy and willing to fork over tax dollars for:
a) The constant failure of individual states to actually apply the entire amount of the federal road subsidies to road maintenance and development, instead choosing to use it for pork.
b) The EPA's failure to actually apply strict air-quality control standards rather than caving in to the corporate demands that allow them to continue to pollute the air in exchange for cheaper operating costs.
c)The failure of water companies to remove toxins from the water supply and adopt "acceptable levels" of toxins.
d) The failure of the USDA and the FDA to protect the American consumer from posions, drugs and growth hormones by also choosing to agree on adopting "acceptable levels" of such toxins.
e)Allowing trade deficits to soar to record levels which drives up the need to pay for more port officials rather than supporting our own farmers or manufacturing companies who have yet to opt for moving operations to other countries. However, your port concerns should lessen once the NAFTA Superhighway is in place and all U.S. imports are delivered to Mexican ports and transported with Mexican trucking companies in order to further exploit the cheap labor pool that Mexico provides.
The only deadbeats I see around here are those who actually continue to endorse the wasteful use of our tax dollars for mediocre to failing federal services and fail to see the need for the American people to start standing up and saying "NO!" to tax dollar waste!

somewhat obtuse veiw....tell me, if i decided i wanted to barter/trade, live a subsistance farming lifestyle and be truly free to self-determine.....
where in the united states can i go where my land won't be taken away for failure to pay taxes on the land I OWN?
where can i travel from place to place without using public roads?
where can i go to hunt my own food year round without being arrested for hunting/fishing out of season/without a license.
what if i dont give a rats ass that some guy in indiana is unemployed and do not wish my money be redistributed?
why can't i pick and choose the services i want and drop off the others service list? fire police ect.
why is my money being used in social programs better left to states?
why can't i drop out of social security and make for my own retirement?
what if i don't need medicare nor want any part of it?
the answer is none of those things are possible. all of them were in place before i was born, i had no choice in the matter and your telling me i should be grateful...interesting how the definition of freedom has changed...there was a time when we produced things HERE ourselves too i guess

It might be well for those who think that their tax dollars have been squandered to ask for refunds for the value of their spelling classes. Obviously, state supported education did them no good.

Oh, come ON! The only significant tax I pay is sales tax. I'm exempt from property or vehicle tax in this state (my choice) because I served in the Army in a war. I don't own a car or a house, so that one is moot. I'll probably own a house before I own a car. I don't pay state income tax because my state doesn't have personal income tax. I don't pay social security because I pay into a state employees' pension fund instead--I work for the state. I do pay medicare, but eh. That's tiny. I don't pay federal income tax because I keep my adjusted gross income below the limit for the maximum retirement savings credit by maxing out my IRA, my 403(b) and my 457 (yes, I'm eligible for all three)plans. I also contribute to a section 125 health reimbursement account so all my medical expenses, prescriptions and OTC health care items are tax free; plus I get my bus pass tax-free by using payroll deduction. If I was eligible for a Health Savings Account (HSA) with a high-deductible health plan (HDHP), I'd do that, too. I'm not because I choose to receive my health care through the Veterans' Affairs Health Care System.
It doesn't leave me a whole lot of money to throw around thoughtlessly, but I manage. Anyone CAN do it--it's just that not many people WANT to live this lean. Still, the point is that you don't HAVE to pay federal income tax (and several other taxes) and can do so legally. Granted, I may have to pay a big chunk o' tax money when I retire if I don't find a way to shelter my retirement investment income, but I don't have to pay it right now. (I'm leaning towards charitable gift annuities.)
But nooo...you want your two SUV's and your air-conditioned McMansion and your personal electronics and your Starbucks (or Wendy's) habit and and your cell phone service with pictures and text messaging and all the junk you can stand to buy at Wal-Mart. Well, tough. You have to pay for that lifestyle. Nobody makes you live that way.

half of what you just posted lisa wouldn't be possible if you owned something and/or weren't a ward of the state...suvs and wal mart aren't my problem i can't stand either one, my problem lies with the government that even in your post punishes success rather than rewarding it. i'm glad to see you find all of the services you take advantage of being a vet are adaquate for you, as they should be, but the rewarded failures of society have a hard time justifying the expenditure of my money to them. sorry, i worked really hard for the 2 bedroom house i share with my wife and kid and feel my money is better spent on me and mine.

Bottom line: It is time for everyone to say NO to the Feds on any level...as far as taxes go, the
Constitution originally only allowed for excise taxes, which are taxes charged for specialized ser-vices...the Fed tax structure is set up to milk the average person for interest on Treasury bonds,
which are printed, not by the Treaury, but by our
privately owned central bank, the FED...the Bush/
Clinton crewe has looted every level of the Federal gov't of TRILLIONS of taxpayer money...it is time to clean them out COMPLETELY...

Are you kidding me? Hooray for Mr. and Mrs. Right to Live Free or Die...!!! I applaud you and send you all the best wishes I can. I wholeheartedly agree that I don't want my money spent on killing, maiming and in general harming innocent people for the sake of power and greed. You rock and I can't tell you how proud you make me. I wish more people had the B+**s you two have. As far as clean air goes, do you read anything or do you just watch CNN and Fox News all day? Clean air went away a long time ago, and how about all the crap in our water, c'mon now get real will you. Smarten up and stop criticizing people who're trying to make a difference, our government sure isn't, oh yeah, I forgot, except for the rich people.
