Gas has broken the $3.00 mark in many U.S. markets, already above the Energy Information Administration's projection of $2.84 for this spring. Although crude oil prices have dropped recently, bottlenecks at the refinery level have driven gasoline higher. So go ahead, rant a bit. I'll wait. Don't forget to curse Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM) and BP p.l.c. ADS (NYSE:BP).
Now for the ugly truth. I'll pay it. You'll pay it. Why? Look at the alternatives --
- Car pooling? Sure, that works if your pool partners have good hygiene, aren't attractive enough to threaten your spouse, don't chatter on endlessly about the Cardinals or their nephew the doctor, don't drive too damn fast or too damn slow, don't respond to their voicemail in a voice like a foghorn, and don't need to make just one teeny stop at the dry cleaners.
- How about public transportation? It probably works well in large cities such as New York, but for most of us, public transit equals losing half an hour's sleep, walking to the bus/train stop, breathing diesel, latching onto every bug spread by people for cryin' out loud don't you know enough to cover your mouth when you cough, and wet shoes. Always, the wet shoes.
- How about walking? It's about six miles from my house to downtown, about an hour and a half each way. At the fed's $.45 per mile, call it $4 and change a day, round trip. My time is worth more than the $1.33 an hour I'd save. Not to mention the added cost of beer (a nice pub in the Short North), falafels, and other enticements along my route.

I thought rape was illegal in the U.S., so why can the oil companies stick it right up our rear ends without the benefit of lubrication? Who ever wrote this must have money on Mobil etc., or that idiot Goerge Bush!

Isn't America great. Don't you just to join the military and die for this country. I mean when you get screwed on Gas Prices, Health Insurance, sending all the jobs over seas, no immigration control, let all the foreigners come in and take our jobs. It's great I love this country.

We in Los Angeles woulld be ecstatic to see $3 gas. Lately we're thrilled to find it under $3.30, and that's for regular unleaded. That moron is responsible for every rotten thing that has happened. Impeach Bush and Cheney!

The government seems so ready to stick there nose into every other facet of life to keep you safe from yourself, and to defend the rights of people in other countries, but when it comes to the flagrent price gouging of the OIL COMPANIES to turn a profit they seem to be deeply in silence.WHY IS THAT?

It should not have surprized me that the first responses here "Bash-Bush"!!
The rest of our planet has easily paid $3-4 a gallon...since the first time I went overseas in 1980! Drive less...get your local government to do some-darned-thing positive about mass trans ... and for heaven's sake don't act like a spoiled 11th Grader when your car-pool partner has to stop at the laundry. Lose the cell phone...but then we really do not seem to be concerned about making the "wireless interests" rich....do we?
I'd vote for Hillary or someone really creative who can change this. Right!! We shall see and maybe you will remember ... or maybe we will all Hash-Hillary or Obliterate Obama!! This is Supply&Demand...purest form. Stop using the commodity and the cost will drop...I promise!
Change the world? Change yourself first! Change your community...get in a car pool and learn to like it or pay the price. Walking isn't bad...my bicycle works fine!

Fred, you are the only one on here so far with smarts. And do people really plan to use less gas to help drive the price back down some? I doubt it. America has become a "me first" country, and troubles will only increase until Jesus returns to save us from ourselves!

Poor babies! Gas at $3 a gallon and heading for $4? Public transportation isn't nearly as bad as you think--I use it to commute to and from work. It takes maybe 15 minutes longer than driving a car because of the idiot drivers in this town. I can take a quick nap on MY commute, or read, or write, or put on makeup or any of the things you aren't supposed to do while driving.
It's also a lot cheaper. Merely operating a paid-for, well-maintained car not prone to breakdowns costs about $200 a month by the time you figure in registration, insurance, minimal maintenance, upkeep, smog certificates, gas and oil. I pay $226 for a full YEAR of unlimited public transportation.
I walk a lot, too. I can incorporate walking into my commute (I do), and do a little extra walking around town for shopping and other errands. That's time I don't have to spend walking on a treadmill I'd have to pay for or pay to use at a gym.
Don't expect sympathy from me until gas goes over $10 a gallon. In the mean time, I'll be that grinning pedestrian watching you fill up your gas-guzzling SUV and knowing just how much it hurts to pay that much for gas.

I don't believe there is collaboration between companies to fix prices. There is not enough incentive for CEOs of public companies to risk going to jail. Also, there are just too many companies for this to be practical. However, Congress will investigate and conduct hearings. These activities have been carried out many times in the past. As in the past, the investigations will find no wrong doing; but the hearings will allow some of these worthies to posture and bluster in front of the camera to show their constituents what excellent public servants they are.

It is kind of dumb to blame the oil companies for the high price of energy. Energy prices, and oil prices in particular are high because for years government has prevented the oil companies from searching for oil in many areas where it is known to contain vast amounts of the black gold. So today we have lower supply availabilities that would have been possible otherwise. And in a tight environment like today those extra barrels of oils would have had a significant impact on crude prices.
Now to add insult to injury, the government has gone wild with the Clean Air Act provision which is costing the consumer about 25 cents per gallon. And to top it off, the so called "mandates". These mandates are forcing consumers to use subsidized alcohol (which taxpayers pay perhaps not at the pump but definitely through other taxes, it comes out of our pockets to the tune of 54 cents per gallon) which also raises the overall cost of our fueling a car.
Then to compound the problem of tight crude supplies, our government, for years, thanks to the environmental pressure from extremist groups, has made it very difficult and costly for companies to build new refineries. And when you coupled this to the strict new regulations on fuels thanks to the Clean Air Act, you end up with the perfect storm.
And finally to top it all off, we have taxes. The government takes about 4 times more in taxes than the oil companies make in profit.
So let's stop being ridiculous blaming the oil companies when the real problem lies in our stupid politicians, the environmental wackos, and the consumers who drive and waste a lot of fuel.

$3.39 is what the sign said at the gas station this morning. Yes, we Californians are really lucky in the gas price lottery. But heck, when I go to Europe I come home happy. Seriously, we need higher gas taxes so that we can build decent transportation options to the car. I'd love to take public transportation everywhere, as I can in Europe, but here it just stinks. Yes, I walk a lot, but some sidewalks would be nice too. It's not reasonable to expect me to come out ahead if I make contact with a Hummer going 50+ miles/hour. Of course, our politicians would have to keep their grubby paws off of the extra gas tax revenue and use for other transportation options. I'm cynical, and not holding my breath. It's going to get much worse before it gets better (I said that in the 70's, and its gotten much worse).

How about looking at Coop America and picking an oil company that you will buy gas from and ones you will NOT. I refuse to even drive my car BY an Exxon Mobile station. My choice is Arco owned by BP where I pay $2.99. Not perfect but better.
Next write to you Senators, Congressmen and Governors. Large corporations could allow more employees to telecommute and/or work alternate work schedules. I have sent my letters. The company I work for could definitely to this because daily we work with people all over the world so face-to-face is not even a concept BUT daily HR walks around to see who is at their desks. Grow up Corporate America and do your part!

HI GAS PRICES ARE GOOD. THERE IS AN ELECTRIC CAR THAT GETS 100 MILES PER CHARGE AND CAN BE RECHERGED IN 10 MIN AND GO ANOTHER 100 MILES. THE GAS COMPANIES WILL CUT THERE JUGULAR SOON ENOUGH. PROBLEM IS. IT WILL TAKE AWHILE FOR THESE CARS TO COME AROUND BECAUSE OF POLITICAL POCKET FILLING.
HYDROGEN CAR CAN RUN TO FLORIDA ON A GLASS OF WATER. HARD TO BELIEVE ISN'T IT. HOW MUCH WATER IS ON EARTH. OH AND WHEN YOU USE IT IT RETURNS TO WATER. WOW NO POLUTION AT ALL. WHY NOT SPEND MONEY TO MAKE THIS A POSSIBILITY. BECAUSE THE OIL COMPANIES PAY OFF YOUR POLITICAL PARTIES. JUST LIKE THEY DID ON THE DRUGS FOR MEDICARE. WE ARE BEING TAKEN TO THE DUMPSTER BY THE GOVERNMENT. THEY DO NOT TAKE CARE OF US ANY MORE. GOV. JUST VOTED IN A 15,000.00 A MONTH RETIREMENT FOR ONE YEAR OF SERVICE. THAT MONEY COMES FROM OUR S/S. TRY THIS ON FOR SIZE. TELL YOUR GOVERNOR, TELL YOUR PRESIDENT.
