Gas has broken the $3.00 mark in many U.S. markets, already above the Energy Information Administration's projection of $2.84 for this spring. Although crude oil prices have dropped recently, bottlenecks at the refinery level have driven gasoline higher. So go ahead, rant a bit. I'll wait. Don't forget to curse Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM) and BP p.l.c. ADS (NYSE:BP).
Now for the ugly truth. I'll pay it. You'll pay it. Why? Look at the alternatives --
- Car pooling? Sure, that works if your pool partners have good hygiene, aren't attractive enough to threaten your spouse, don't chatter on endlessly about the Cardinals or their nephew the doctor, don't drive too damn fast or too damn slow, don't respond to their voicemail in a voice like a foghorn, and don't need to make just one teeny stop at the dry cleaners.
- How about public transportation? It probably works well in large cities such as New York, but for most of us, public transit equals losing half an hour's sleep, walking to the bus/train stop, breathing diesel, latching onto every bug spread by people for cryin' out loud don't you know enough to cover your mouth when you cough, and wet shoes. Always, the wet shoes.
- How about walking? It's about six miles from my house to downtown, about an hour and a half each way. At the fed's $.45 per mile, call it $4 and change a day, round trip. My time is worth more than the $1.33 an hour I'd save. Not to mention the added cost of beer (a nice pub in the Short North), falafels, and other enticements along my route.

The people that are hit the hardest are the farmers. We live where there isn't any puplic transportation. To get any where you have to drive many miles to anywhere. We are the people who provide the food that everyone eats. If we can't afford the fuel prices to farm the land, feed your stock, where will the food come from? Fuel prices effect EVERYTHING!!!
What about the middle class and the lower class? Half of the pay check already goes to the baby sitter. Now the other half will go to pay for the gas to get to work. What will they have left to live on. People will not have a choise they will have to stay home an collect welfare.

Drive less, plan better, combine trips, check with friends/neighbors when you're going to the store, ride a bicycle or motorcycle more often, and stop buying those humongous SUVs! As a 90's automotive TV advertisement so aptly demonstrated, maybe you need all that armor to protect you from the weight of all that armor when the vehicle can't stop because it has the stopping power of a candy cigarette, or can't swerve out of its own way without tipping over. I'm alive today because I AVOIDED an accident in a small car that cars any larger would not have. Learning better driving skills helps, like not pretending that tailgating and hard stop & gos are justified by "defending your space". Fewer accidents helps cut down on energy use and there are far too many accidents caused by aggressive drivers mixed with timid drivers in South Florida. Leave a few extra minutes to get to where you're going. Try practicing in a parking lot on wet pavement how not to lock the wheels in a hard stop, and don't be "right" behind the wheel, BE SMART. It is not your job to control the driving habits of other drivers. Leave that to the police. Aggressive drivers get more tickets whether you witness it or not. Those who try to slow down or block other drivers, or who don't get back over to the right after they've passed, unwittingly add to other drivers' aggressiveness. And take it from a professional driver - Using your turn signals works better than not using them. If you end up having to cut in some because others didn't have the patience to let you in, at least they can't blame you for not signalling, and you'll cut down on road rage, too. Another good practice is to drive as close as possible to the lane you want to get into to convince other drivers that you didn't just forget to cancel your signal.

High prices because of gas shortages. When was the last time you saw lines at the gas stations or a sign saying closed out of gas?

It doesn't pay to bash Bush, he works for the oil companies as did ( or does)Bush Sr. and probably a number of congess people and representitives, remember last year when the 5 oil ceo's came before a congressional com. to answere questions about the record breaking profits. Stephens of alaska passsed a motion to exclude them from testifying under oath, thats their power. More refineries, why should they spend all that money to lower prices? never happen. We have to have a consumer revolt and i'm not talking car pools or public transportaion, although those are good ideas, i say, this year, everybody stay home for the holidays. dont' drive off on memorial day or 4th of july, or summer vacation, thankgiving, christmas. save the fuel save the money, use the savings to pay down a credit card or make an extra mortgage payment, play tourist in your home town. Just this year and see what happens.

How about puting all public transportation, state, county and city vehicles on bio-diesel and atlernative fuel? And require all transportation companies, such as trucking companies and trains on bio-diesel by 2009? That would cut traditional fuel production by 25-35%!

Here is a plan that will get the oil companies, big business and the government's attention. First: Get in the habit of only buying what you absolutely need, not what you want. Second: One weekend a month we do no shopping, no going out to eat, no movies do ,no Mall nothing that involves spending extra money. Third: Stop celebrating any national holiday in a monetary way. No gifts, no cook out, no visiting etc. Let's start with the 4th of July. If we can get together and do this, Gas Prices Will Come Down. If someone reading this would know how to organize this. then lets do it. Send this out to those in your address book and to all your government officials, including president Bush.

Energy in a nut shell: Oil is traded on the stock market. The cost of crude is pennies compared to the profits of speculators who buy and sell the stuff before, while it is being shipped, and when it arrives at our refineries. (Perspective: a tomato changes hands more than 20 times before it's consumed. Every change increases the cost to you, at the vegie stand, in the catsup bottle, and at your favorite italian eatery). On top of every change is a tax on profit (in addition to the use taxes we pay at the pump; for gas that is, well, and for your bloody mary). All this expense is passed along to the final user. It's called capitalism. The chinese have been re-inventing it now for the past fifteen years. Much of our (which would have been ours) oil (and gas for that matter) is being shipped to China for this capitalistic approach which will eclypes our economy within the next five to ten years, as more chinese learn to love bloody marys. Think you have problems now? China will suck the world dry, and will become the second largest economy in the world, if not....... Thank God most of us like chinese food and cheap radios.

I travel over seas quit a bit and initially found it over priced, and I mean on everything from groceries, gas, and supplies. I mean everything. As I visited morte often I realized that this high cost was their reality for some time and they had adjusted to it. Packaging was smaller and simpler, paper plates and cups were rarely used, cars are smaller, homes are smaller and efficient, they waist very little energy and supplies. Lights were turned off after exiting a room. Most do not have Air Conditioning. The cars are equipted with manual shifter for better fuel economy. At the end of the day, all of this adds up to living through necessity of saving and respecting energy costs. We americans have been riding a wave a very nice comfortable wave of very cheap goods for a long time. It is unfortuanate, but I think the rest of the worlds issues have caught up with ours. It is time to re think our ways of old and conserve as much as we can. We need to push and I mean push for alternative cost effective resouces. Otherwise, big energy will continue to press our way of life and nibble at every dollar we make. It is a reality that not everyone can car pool of ride public transportation, but for those who can try it . I have done it and when possible I prefer it. I live in LA and it is more pleasnt than dealing with the daily drivers. Good luck all!!!!!

election. Back, before the Dems took over,I was paying $2.60 a gallon, now $3.05. China

I am real estate agent - I HAVE to drive people around to show them homes to make a living, so I am another one who must pay the price no matter what. QUESTION FOR YOU ALL: Who has heard of the "LAW OF SUPPLY AND DEMAND"? Demand drops/supply stays the same or goes up/PRICE drops. Demand increases/supply stays the same or drops/PRICE INCREASES. Can't get any simpler than that. SO, here are some numbers for you - @ 75-80 MPH on the freeway, my vehicle (2005 Dodge Dakota 4.7 Liter) gets 16.5 - 17 MPG. @ 55 MPH, it gets 24.5 - 25.5 MPG - by my math, that looks like a 32% increase in fuel mileage - 4 gallons to go 100 miles, vs. 5.88 gallons to go the same 100 miles. Time difference to go 20 miles: 5.8 minutes.
Pour yourself a cup of coffee in your travel mug, leave 5 minutes earlier, and SLOW THE HECK DOWN! Seems to me that a 32% reduction in fuel sales would get someone's attention.
All you crybabies who pass me on the freeway when I'm cruising along relaxed @ a "mere" mile-a-minute then whine about the price of your gas get no sympathy from me. End of story.

I love you people that say put the blame where blame is do. You want to blame everyone except the oil companies. When you look at the last quarterly profits (3 Months) from 3 to 10 billion dollars per quarter, so multiply that times 4 to get the yearly profits. Profit is after all their expenses have been paid. There is only one label that you can put on profits like that, MONOPOLY! You people that use your heads for hat racks can't see past the end of your noses. You think that the oil companies need to co-laborate together to see what the other oil company is doing? DA! They just read the newspaper just like you do. They say look what Exion did last week and they didn't have any repercushions from the federal regulatory comissions so lets follow suit. When you have those people bought and paid for and in your back pocket then there isn'nt much that they can't get away with. If you have ever heard of "conflict of interest" then you should be PO'd. Our President Bush has a conflict of interest. He is an oil man and at the same time he allows the oil companies to charge whatever the want,at the same time allowing his own profits to skyrocket himself right into a multi millionare. Why do you think President Bush is not talking about putting a cap on the price of oil. He isn't up for re-election so he doesn't care what you or I have to pay at the pumps nor will he ever. I don't think the Goverment should regulate everthing when it comes to prices, but when they offer no other alturnitave then they have a monopoly, pure and simple. What most of the people keep forgetting in this country is that when fuel rises it causes everthing to rise in cost 2-4 times. First factories have to heat and cool there place of business for the workers and themselves so they have to add that increase to the cost of their product. Then if they need any oil product or by-product to manufacture their product or products then that will be another increase in their production costs. Then they need to ship their products to market. Shipping has skirocketed also, so how much do they need to raise the price of their product to cover that? Then when you the consumer have to drive to the mall to purchase this product, how much is this going to increase the cost of this product???? ( I guess you people who think that walking is a solution to higher gas prices can subtract that last added cost and walk to the mall and purchase your groceries. But I hope you will someday wake up and put a stop to these polititcal hosing we as americans are recieving.)If you are young enough to say oh well, or so what, some day you won't be. What are you going to do then? You say these other countries have payed this price for years, that's when I say SO WHAT! I suppose that since some of these other countries haven't had some of the freedoms that we have enjoyed in the last several years that we should give up some of them too? just because these greedy oil companies aren't willing to settle for a far and adiquit price dos'nt mean that we say "so what!" We are LEADERS not FOLLOERS. The voters and the taxpayers run this country. Vote these S O B's OUT OF OFFICE!!!! And if needs be Give Bush The BOOT!!!!!! SO WHAT!? I HAVE YOUR (SO WHAT) IN MY NEXT BALLOT!!!!!!!!!

Of course Number 11 blog is correct and shows a very smart understanding of the market situation in as much as it was created by the political process to start with. however, it also ignores some basic business logic. That is to say that the old companies, refineries, and fuel marketers have figured out that our daily demand for fuel is relatively inelastic and we will collectively buy just about the same amount of fuel at $3/gallon as we will at $2/gallon, or any other price. Why should they compete with each other and drive their profit margins down when they can just increase the price independently of each other knowing the other marketers will follow the price increases upward ?
This is just good sound business on their part and there is little or nothing we can do about it. This is called an economic Oligopoly, defined as a few sellers and many, many buyers. When one of them moves the price, the rest follow in general and they have not done anyhing illegal in our system of free competition. Ergo, they independently but collectively manipulate the market price knowing we will buy the product anyway regardless of the price.. because we simply have to.

I just don't get it. If people have any rights, it's basic rights to food, shelter, health care and education. They also have the right to own property they have lawfully obtained.
None of that includes the right to purchase goods or services at a price you determine by yourself with no input from the vendor. A vendor doesn't have to sell anything to you at any price. None of that includes the right to live in luxury unless you pay in some way to do so.
Living where you want to live may be a luxury, even if you are perfectly free to do so. Owning and operating a motor vehicle is a luxury, because there are other forms of transportation available (perhaps not ones you LIKE, but that's another question). A long commute is essentially a luxury; you are choosing higher pay and/or greater job satisfaction over what is available to you within 15 minutes' walking distance. Owning a business barely on the edge of profitability is a luxury; do you seriously think that others should pay for you to do what you love? It's nice if you love what you do AND can make good money at it, but it's certainly not a right.
There are always choices, and it's important to face up to the costs of those choices. Paying for gasoline is just one of them.
