Starbucks' 'The Way I See It' cup campaign, in which philosophers of both the famous and mundane varieties express pithy opinions on paper coffee cups, has caused a lot of talk from day one. When the first batch of quotes seemed too left-leaning, Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ: SBUX) reached out to a variety of more conservative folks, including customers, to add their ideas to the company's green-and-black cylindrical medium. And then the ideas started spinning fast and furious until it seemed that anything went. But Bill Schell's quote was just too much for Michelle Incanno, a longtime Starbucks customer in Ohio and avid Catholic. She took offense to its rather atheistic message: "Why in moments of crisis do we ask God for strength and help? As cognitive beings, why would we ask something that may well be a figment of our imaginations for guidance? Why not search inside ourselves for the power to overcome? After all, we are strong enough to cause most of the catastrophes we need to endure."
Incanno says she won't go to Starbucks any more after reading such a questioning of her beliefs along with her morning caffeine (despite the fact that the company has printed many pro-religion quotes). Perhaps if she'd just picked up a different cup that day ...
Oh, what could have been.

Wow. If reading something stupid on a coffee cup makes you that upset, you've got some massive faith- and/or self-esteem-related issues that you need to address. Unless, of course, you're just a self-righteous attention seeker who's pretending to be upset in order to get your name in the newspaper.

I am a conservative evangelical Christian, and have disagreed with many of the statements on fivebucks cups. I'm sure others have, but no boycott in the news... Double standard?
Last I checked it was the way "I" see it, not the way that the person who is reading the cup must feel obligated to see it.

Honestly....this is what has happened to American Society and it really sucks! People have been so "P.C." to the extreme because of people such as this one in the story, that it ruins the true gift of living in america for the rest of us. I am going to be P.C.(PERFECTLY CLEAR)....Gimme a damn break lady.....grow up and get over yourself!

I see the meaning of the phrase in question ["Why in moments of crisis do we ask God for strength and help?"] differently from Michelle. I think it asks why do we only call on God in crisis, when we do not have a daily walk with Him. Why do we seek his attention in troubled times and not thank him daily for his blessings? Maybe that's not what Starbucks had in mind OR maybe it is. Maybe we can thank them for THAT message, though they know not what they do.

in response to 1 and 3:
seems to me that a christian has no right to be offended about anything according to you guys or is just some pathetic attention seeker.
just perhaps the person has strong core values and does not feel the need to have them insulted while drinking a cup of very overpriced coffee....no wait , that would mean the person has a right to feel that way.
i dont frequent starbucks much...think ill do even less so now.

I think this article would have been more accurately named "Starbucks and atheistism don't mix for one customer". Her issue wasn't with God, as the headline mis-stated.

It's amazing that people get so offended about any and everythingthing these days. It's PATHETIC to become that emotionally distraught over the personal opinion of someone else who is exercise his/ her first amendment rights.
No wonder why this country is not making much progress in todays society. This politically correctness has been creating too many wimps

Just I thought, I wonder if this lady expressed the same outrage when she found out that so many Catholic priests were sexually preying on innocent altar boys.
Probably not because she still seems to be a "devoted" Catholic. And besides, the the so-called atheist presented a valid argument: Why is it when humans are in a crisis, this is the only time that they acknowledge God?

I was just wondering: did this woman expressed the same amount of outrage when she found out that there were numerous amounts of Catholic priests sexually preying upon innocent altar boys?
I thinnk not since she is such a "devote" Catholic who will never drink at Starbucks again but will continue to attend mass at a Catholic church
What double standard, what a wuss, and what sanctimonious BS. Get over yourself and get your head out of you know what

I am 77 years old and it amazes me that I live in a country where people can no longer express their opinion without some religious fanatic ( who probably never goes to church) always taking exception. Give it a rest. Starbucks how dumb that you think in todays climate you can do such a thing.

I wasn't even aware of the "The Way I See It" comments on Starbucks cups until an online acquaintance told me about it. So, for as long as I still had money left on a free Starbucks card I'd been given, I took the time to read the cups. Bo-RIIIING! If someone is getting wound up over some inane blather on a coffee cup, he or she needs to get a life.

I know I'm probably the last human being on earth to be able to say this, but I've never been inside a Starbucks in my life. I'm 44. I drink coffee. My life is not coming crashing down. How "newsworthy" is this little story, anyhow ?

Unfortunately, natural thinking people are limited in their perception of God Who is Spirit. The natural mind applies natural attributes to God, or Spirit, which results in religion or, what I call Churchianity. It is impossible for the natural, logical mind of man to perceive God. As the Bible states, "The natural man does not perceive the things of God, neither can he know them for they are spiritually discerned." Starbucks caters to the money market and the coffee drinking public. Starbucks certainly is not a valid or reliable source for spiritual advice.

Listen People! If you are offended, DON'T read it. Its that simple. Watch YOUR Lane! People are so worried about what other people are doing, not doing, eating, praying and sleeping with.. Worry about YOURSELF! Example: If you don't like porn, dont watch it! If you're a vegetarian, DON'T eat meat, stop worrying about what everyone else is eating. If you are not Gay or Lesbian, then dont sleep with someone of the same sex, but STOP worrying about what everyone else is doing, watch YOUR lane.. Like bowling.. youre on lane 6, do you really care what the person on lane 11 is doing? NO, right.. Well, stick to your lane and you will be happier in life! Religious fanatics, diehards, whatever you want to call yourself, let other people believe what they believe, dont worry about them, worry about YOU! If seeing something on a coffee cup offends you, live in a closet, its out there, freedom of speech, dont get wrapped around the axel because someone doesnt have YOUR beliefs!

I couldn't have said it better myself !! Very well said, "WATCH YOUR LANE" why people get all bent out of shape over something as trivial as a simple message on a coffee cup. Who gives a sh--. Get real and get a life. Let other people live their life and you live yours....Nuff said..Thanks again Scott.

"everyone has an opinion" including me :) "stay in your own lane" - well, that would work if Everyone did, but they don't and your lane slowly disappears. Freedom of speech-yeah. But really, don't we just want-a-cup-of-coffee? Doesn't Starbucks make enough crazy $$ from us idiots willing to spend that $$ for something we can make ourselves? and still we complain about gas $$ - whew! be sure~it'll never end. Hey Starbucks-we have the news to ponder and discuss - how about starting our day with inspirational 'MAKE a GREAT day' words? FOOLS! There's more profit for ALL there
