United Parcel Service, Inc. (NYSE: UPS) is looking for some good innovative small businesses. And if they are really good, the company is willing to cough up $25,000. That's right, $25k.
In honor of the company's Centennial celebration, UPS has kicked off its third annual UPS Best "Out-of-the-Box" Small Business Contest, and this time it's going global.
UPS said the international contest will honor "the most innovative small businesses," and specifically designed the contest for companies with 2006 revenues of at least $250,000 but not more than $10 million. To enter, owners or employees must fill out an entry form here and submit a 500-word essay explaining why their company is original and how their business has been successful.
Last year Money Savvy Pig, a company dedicated to teaching children about money management and another that provides products and ideas to help people with dementia, The Alzheimer's Store, won for creative thinking and original business concepts.
Your entry will be judged by a group of small business experts based on originality, business implementation and business results.
First place wins $25,000 cash, an IBM small business package and a place in UPS's international publicity campaign related to the contest.
Second and third place winners get $10,000 and $5,000, respectively, along with the IBM small business package, and will be included in UPS's local publicity campaign for the contest.
UPS will also give $10,000 to the small business that exemplifies the "end-to-end customer service" theme of the event.
Who wouldn't want to qualify for $25,000? A note to applicants: It doesn't look like the "lemonade stand on the corner" concept is going to qualify, regardless of its flashy slogan or which remote part of the world your lemons come from.

DEAR # 19, Why are you so angry with me (#18). I have been in successful business for more than 16 years. Last year my business "NET" was $1.3million. So, as to business ownership 101, I guarantee you I could run circles around you, especially after I return home from my 10 day vacation in Aruba. To a "small business $250k whether it be Net Profits - Sales Revenue or a dream of feeding their families - its still $250k they have never seen. And to discourage a struggling business from getting help, especially free help is just evil. If you really don't CARE about this contest - why are you here.

JOHN N #19 & RICK, WE KNOW YOU WORK FOR UPS... SO YOUR STUPID OPINION IS COMPLETELY INVALID. GO AWAY, AND LET SMALL BUSINESS, THAT IS "SMALL BUSINESS" BE. MABEY, WE ARE HAPPY DOING WHAT WE DO, ITS NOT ABOUT CUTTING IT OR WORKING FOR MCDONALDS, ITS ABOUT CONTRIBUTING POSITIVELY TO THE WORLD, AND MOSTLY THAT'S NOT ABOUT GETTING RICH. THAT'S NOT TO SAY THAT GETTING AN OPPORTUNITY TO WIN $25,000 TO OFSET OUR EFFORTS FROM A COMPANY THAT WE HAVE FAITHFULLY USED WOULDN'T BE NICE!

This does not mean $250,000 bottom line profit. I am sure they mean 250,000 gross. Most small business can meet the 250,000 gross. If you operate a small business and cannot gross 250,000, then I would consider selling or going out of business. You would be much better off to go into the job market, which in most jobs will give you health insurance and hopefully a paid vacation. I was in business for many years and I tell you health insurance would be a burden on a small business owner with a gross of 250,000 or less. A business is very demanding.
