Random House, a division of the privately held media conglomerate Bertelsmann AG, is offering compensation to any reader claiming to be "duped" by James Frey's memoir, A Million Little Pieces. Frey's story was a scandal that broke in January of last year. The author's ostensibly non-fiction book described, in excruciating detail, his miserable existence within an alcohol and drug-addled haze. Toe-curling details include a three-month stint in jail, an anesthesia-free trip to the dentist, and time in rehab.
Published in April 2003, the book hit the best-seller list more than two years later, after Oprah Winfrey named it her September 2005 book club selection. But Frey's ride of success wasn't long; in January 2006, it was revealed that the "memoir" contained outright fabrications. (Essentially, Frey is the Milli Vanilli of modern American literature). Readers who bought A Million Little Pieces before January 26, 2006 (around the time Frey confessed that his penned story wasn't entirely true) are now entitled to a refund from the publisher.
Those who bought the hardcover copy will receive as much as $23.95; ones who bought the book in paperback will get a maximum refund of $14.95. The entire program is expected to cost Random House $2.35 million. The publisher's decision, approved by a Manhattan Federal Judge, is expected to resolve several lawsuits already filed across the country by disgruntled readers.
While Frey's fabrications are certainly reprehensible, the fact remains that A Million Little Pieces reportedly helped countless readers who were struggling with their own addictions. I can't help but wonder how Frey's real story might have gone if he'd pitched his book as one "inspired by true events" rather than a completely factual "memoir."

I feel that story was meant to inspire and motivate drug users and their families. I, for one, loved the story and feel it was a great investment on my part. I have family members who use drugs. Their form of reality and reality are two different things.

As a recovering addict I found it inspiring and a reminder that by the Grace of God my bottom was not that bad. Be it true or not, there are those who suffer fates as bad as was written and worse. The book was a reminder why I have been clean for 5 1/2 yrs. now. By far, the best book I've ever read. Whether or not he embellished on it, WHO CARES!!! It that book helps one person get clean or stay clean, he has done his job.

On the flip side of the comments made.. I too have battled my demons, reading the book..made me think, how was HE able to do this..and I am struggling with the small day to day stuff. I actually felt a bit of a failure for not being able to handle things that were so minscule in relation to the things he described. He may have helped some, but his book was a disservice to many others.

It was a good book, I don't believe ever word I read in book. He is not the first person to add on to a story.. I hear people do it all the time. I hope he is doing well. I hope the book helped those that needed it. Hang in there James. You are a good guy, and write a good book.

As much as I was looking at an alternative to AA, due to a lot of its self-serving religious over tones, it has shown tremendous success. He led millions to believe his way of "hold on" was just as successful. It was a lie, a dangerous lie to millions of addicts looking for a way out. Shame on you James Frey and most importantly shame on the demigod Oprah Winfrey for her lack of research and blind leadership,do you ever take time to imagine the damage you have done.

I read this book before the guy was labled a 'fraud' by Oprah. I thought the book was good and quite frankly, it's pretty STUPID that oprah dedicated an entire show to him based solely on the fact that it wasn't 100% true. How ridiculous! So what!!!!!! HOW DOES ANYONE REALLY KNOW IF AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY IS COMPLETELY TRUE ANYWAY!?!?!?!!?? GET OVER IT.

In response to Mike, "He led millions to believe his way of "hold on" was just as successful. " It is my understanding that his book helped many which spins your thesis on its head. If people followed his way and it worked for them then it isn't as you put it "a dangerous lie". If people stop doing what is working for them becuase he embellished or fibbed on parts of his book then that is the most dangerous aspect of this whole debacle. Mike, what did you do when you found out your parents lied to you about the easter bunny, tooth fairy or even Santa Clause? Shame on you Mike, Shame on you.

Well, for one this book grabbed me and whether it was true or not it was an attention getter! As for Oprah passing judgment on her show it only made her look as though she was trying to be God. I have a problem with anyone passing judgments on others. She certainly did that day. As far as his writing and misrepresentations, well don't we get those everyday and don't we all have to sort through what we believe. I applaud Frey for his work...he just labeled it wrongly. I only wish there were more books that pulled emotion out like this one did. (Standing and applauding)

my book was a gift while i was in active addiction. i had been in treatment centers before and knew it was a lie from jump street. i finished the book just to see what kind of fairytale ending he had in store. chris and mike need to work on steps 10,11,12 because somthing is eating on them. beth needs to wise up and realize when your life might be in someone elses hands the provider of information should needs to have that in mind and i dont think james has that much sense.

I read the book and loved it! I wasn't really hung up on whether or not it was truth or fiction. I watched Oprah's show when she announced it was "a lie". I thought she was harsh and rude. How would she feel if she had to face the people she has wronged?

I am so tired of everyone putting down James Frey. "A Million Little Pieces" was an exellent book. I bought the book after Oprah tried to belittle him on her show. I watched that show and felt so bad for Mr. Frey. Oprah seemed to be greatly enjoying making him feel bad, and I haven't watched her show since. She's an opportunist. So what if it's not all true,I don't feel duped by it.
I intend to read "A Million Little Pieces" again and any other books he writes.
Mr. Frey, if you happen to read any of these messages, hold your head high in knowing you did help people out by reading that book.

I loved this book, anything that can make me laugh and cry in the same page is wonderful...even if it is not all true. When I read books I base them on how they make ME feel, not how much truth they hold. I liked 'my friend leonard' as well and quite frankly, I do not care if Leonard is real or not either.

The only problem I had with the book was Frey's strong distaste/hate for AA. 12 Step programs really work for a lot of people. Addicts need to know that what James Frey used to get clean might not work for them. I would love to know how James Frey is doing today; hoping and praying he's clean, sober, and happy. I had a problem with the language, but that's just me. Having said all that, I thought the book was one of the best I've ever read, and I treasure it. It was wonderful, and it opened my eyes to the living hell of addiction. Frey had me from page one, and I rooted for James' recovery every step of the way. I could not wait to get my hands on "My Friend Leonard." Okay, so I was a little disappointed to hear it was not a true memoir, but I shrugged it off. What was HUGELY disappointing was Oprah Winfrey's behavior. Watching her public whipping of James Frey gave me a sick feeling in my stomach. Oprah did a terrible disservice to herself that day, so much so that, for me, it has overshadowed all the good things she had done. I applaud James Frey for having the courage to sit through it and do it with such grace. I look forward to Frey's next book.

As the wife of a recovered addicted who went through years and years of failed attempts to (get clean)I know for a fact that until a person realizes for himself the damage he/she is causing to themselves and anyone who cares about them, there is no hope of recovery. No book, magazine, rehab,or N.A. program can help someone who is not ready to help themselves. My prayers are with anyone who seeks to break the vicious cycle of drug and alcohol abuse. May you be granted grace to suceed and peace for the long road ahead.
