All my friends and their children are wearing Crocs to the playground, Crocs to the birthday party, Crocs to the coffee shop. All my colleagues are raving about Crocs Inc. (NASDAQ: CROX) stock -- Georges Yared even says Crocs is the next Nike. But: Crocs are just ugly. I finally gave in to my husband's plea and bought colorful knockoffs for the garden (on the family plan no less), but still, I refuse to wear them around the neighborhood and the $30-$40 price tag for the real deal has me recoiling with sticker shock.Deidre Woollard, my buddy at Styledash, agrees that she won't wear them outside the comfort of her own home, either, but admires Mario Batali for making orange Crocs look good. He's put his endorsement behind the launch of a new line of "Bistro" Crocs (selling at $39.95 apiece) and he certainly wears them, on the set, on the red carpet, on the town.
Will Mario's embracement of Crocs help me -- or you -- overcome their ugliness? I certainly am not rushing out to slap down my debit card for a pair (although I love the orange, actually), but every time I see someone like Mario actually using them I inch a little closer to a purchase. After all, my knockoffs are great for the pocketbook but they do give me blisters once I've been in the garden for a couple of hours... are they really that great?I keep trying to decide if CROX is the "next Nike." But the thing is this: Nike Inc. (NYSE: NKE) has always been about design; form has always gone hand-in-hand with function and sometimes form trumps function (thus we have people running around in shoes designed for the basketball court, or hiking the stairs at high school in shoes designed for the trail). Nike is cool first and good second -- and Nike is good. I'll happily plunk down $80 for a pair I know will keep me from getting shin splints or instep cramps when I'm running a road race.
I'm not writing Crocs off yet, but it's going to take a bunch more notable indications of their comfort and utility to get me over the ugly hump. How about you?

There is no way Crocs can be the next nike. There a wicked fad and if you got in early you made some good money off melted and pressed rubber. There is no way the company has lasting success without coming out with more than foam/rubber clogs. If you want to find the next nike look towards Under Armor.

I guess people still doesn't realize what made Crocs successful is not the design but the material that they used. The management is doing an excellent job. Don't be surprised that Crocs will use the material for other merchandise besides shoes. When you think about Under Armor, it's the same thing ... it's the material that they used. Come on, if you talk about style, there are many companies better than Under Armor. If we talk about the material used, I will take Crocs any day over Under Armor just because the areas that Crocs can enter is much better than Under Armor.

Soon there wont be anything in the sporting industry that UA doesn't make. However creating a lasting fad in rubber footwear will be hard to sustain. You wont see A-Rod running the basses in his rubber clogs.

Holding a patent on an innovative, bacteria-free, odor-free, slip resistant shoe that orthopedic doctors are recommending over orthotic footgear is not a fad. It's too utilitarian to be a fad. It may lose popularity in everyday use, but nurses, chefs, teachers and any other position that works on its feet will use these for years to come.

it is true that anyone who wears crocs has a higher risk of being eaten by crocodiles because the dino descendants find them sexy.

Justin,
Holding a Patent on something that is made in china is like the Colonel storing his secret recipe on a torrent site. I am sure there is a factory right next door to the crocs one making the exact same shoe called Gators.

The original Crocs are just the beginning. The beach sandals are so comfortable like all of their other styles. The knockoffs don't feel the same. Walk in a pair and you will see. Something is special about them, because in just over a year since they went public, they have 25,000 retail channels worldwide and all by word of mouth only.

I know people who are on their feet a lot and have given up pain patches and other therapy (and severe pain!) since finding CROCS! Ugly?? No, comfortable, versatile, and healthful! Not ugly.

Don't write CROCS off as a passing fad just yet. They continue to expand and transform themselves into more than the company that makes rubber shoes. They have lots of "CROCS" gear - hats, jackets, wrist bands, visors, etc., etc. The CROCS brand is gaining more and more attention. As long as they continue to sign licensing deals with the likes of Disney, AVP, Marvel, etc. and continue to introduce new styles, they will continue to thrive. There are several new styles due out this fall and winter, including men's and women's shoes with the marshmallow soft CROC feel, but with canvas and leather uppers. And, they look cool to boot! I'm in at @ $56 on the stock and LONG.

Why would you buy "knock-offs" and then write a post on CROX? Why not buy the real thing, CROX, and then write about it? Am I missing something?

I own 3 prs of crocs. just had knee surgery. can't wear anything BUT a croc because of the softness to the joint, when i walk. i recommend them to all who suffer from joint pain. the knock off's DO NOT have the same softness for joint pain. this shoe will continue to grow as more and more people are afflicted with leg/knee/foot/hip pain.

I'm a 59 yr-old woman who owns 4 prs. of Crocs. I admit they're over-priced at $30 per pair, but I love them & plan to buy more in other colors. They are extremely comfortable & slip-proof. They also fit my wide feet well.
For those who think they're made in China--they're not. They're made in Mexico & don't have that hideous "Chinese industrial" smell that makes me gag. I wear mine all the time in & around my house. I wouldn't be ashamed to wear them away from home, but I don't want them to wear out too fast, so I'm taking good care of them.

Well, let me add....I saw a pair on a NASA engineer at a group meeting and it was Thursday. Actually, they look comfortable, and if one enjoys wearing them....why not...let me add...dead is dead...once you are gone, and no guarantee you will be 80, you will not be able to buy them in heaven. My point is....wear what pleases you, and don't worry about what others may say or think....live now, and if you enjoy those shoes, then wear them. It could be a lot worse.....I love some of the "earth" and "treehugger" shoes.

Crocs are not only ugly they are uncomfortable. I ordered a pair from Crocs, they arrived, I tried them and immediately sent them back. They are just ugly and gross.

Like you I love wearing them when I go out of the house to water my flowers. other than that they are ugly......but sometime ugly is good. As for comfort I'm still out on that one because I never have them on long enough to find out....

These are cheap to manufacture injection molded gardening shoes sold for a high price to trendy consumers. The function is not there. Soon you will have very cheap similar shoes and the fad will be over.

I have a pair of cheap knockoffs from Target, bought for back and forth to the pool. Bright pink, like $3.00 and the most comfortable thing I have ever walked in. I finally wore them to a cookout the other night. No one mentioned them. Don't know if that is good or bad. Not really the fashion setting crowd.
