In yet another sign of the decline of network television news, General Electric Co.'s (NYSE: GE) NBC dumped "Dateline" anchor Stone Phillips. He won't be the last high-priced talent to be shown the door.
As ratings continue to decline for news programs at NBC, Walt Disney Co.'s (NYSE: DIS) ABC and CBS Corp. (NYSE: CBS) profit pressures are intensifying as shareholders demand to see a return for the money being poured into these shows.
That's why Phillips won't be earning nearly as much at his next job as the $7 million USA Today says he earned at NBC. Odds are best that he'll wind up at News Corp's (NYSE: NWS) Fox News Channel, Time Warner Inc.'s (NYSE: TWX) or another cable network such as the Discovery Channel which is now home to former "Nightline" anchor Ted Koppel.
In the wake of Philips' departure, TV personalities up and down the dial are probably quaking in their designer clothes wondering whether they will be next. It's a well-founded fear.
Networks are less patient than ever.
If entertainment programs don't immediately catch on, they are gone after a handful of episodes. Ratings are just as important to news programs. Though nightly news programs have been in decline for years, they still make good money for the networks.
Ratings points translate into advertising sales which translates eventually into profits. No TV star is immune from fiscal realities.
That's why Philips got pushed out the door. "Dateline" has morphed into a program dedicated to catching pathetic sex offenders. His services as a newsman were no longer needed.

figure this out -the networks are hurting, but they fire Imus who generated millions of dollars--"no one", and I mean "no one" can replace Imus--he is one of a kind--his show was funny and entertaining-those who didn't like it or approve of him didn't have to watch---the network executives and the advertisers are cowards and hypocrites.

This is very sad news for me. I adored Stone Phillips and looked forward to each Dateline edition. I was hoping he would be considered for the Today Show slot that Matt Lauer landed. They missed the target on this one. Stone, I know you will land on your feet. Professionals like you are few and far between.

I was shocked to find out Stone was giving us his last appearance on Dateline. It brought tears to my eyes. I watched Dateline for his radiant smile,& soothing voice. Knowing this man cares about presenting the trueth & doing a good job. You can just tell his values as a man (I wish there were more like you! To all the other men, there is a new book out...MAN UP!! by Dr. Cliff Self- get it!) Stone's intervew with his father was very special. How men should be able to communicate,& share gratitude. I know that Stone will continue to be blessed & to be a blessing to the world, we anxiously await to see you again. Never forget our hearts are with you always! Linda

Phillips is leaving "Dateline" because he has been courted by CBS for co-anchor on "The Evening News" with Couric. NBC refused to match an offer by CBS. Phillips will bolster CBS's dropping market share.

Another BIG NBC Blunder ... dismissing Stone Phillips! We'll follow him wherever he goes!
What a First-Class Gentleman!
We're hoping he will be joining FOX, since we've
'dismissed' NBC from our favored viewing channel.

I, along with others, will miss Stone Phillips on Dateline. I hope he lands a job worthy of his talent. NBC, shame on you for this loss. I will have to rethink what news programs I watch!!
Yes, the interview with his father was so touching and poignant.

I cried after watching Stone Phillips last show, he was the best! charming..interesting, smart, and so good-looking, I've watched him for the whole 15 years, and was saddened, by his departure.. WHY did they lose him or was it his choice? what will he be doing now? "DATELINE' won't be the same without him!

My wife and I were touched but saddened by the announced departure of Stone Phillips from Dateline. The "suits" at GE and NBC have temporarily put a few million in the corporate coffers. They may yet be vilified however for their myopic and fugacious knee-jerk reaction to the larger issue of shareholder greed. Another "well-founded fear" for NBC is that viewers have a collective voice that reverberates through the deep waters of corporate arrogance and gluttony.

I'm sad after hearing Stone Phillips was let go from Dateline. His voice always made me feel comfortable and interested in the story he was introducing. I'll never understand why the supposed "higher ups" take something that is "working" & try to fix it? Doesn't make sense to me. Whoever gets Stone will be very fortunate. He's a great talent and has an audience that will
follow him. NBC...you lose!

I was really saddened and disappointed by NBC dismissing Stone Phillips. He was an excellent reporter and that voice was priceless. I'll keep looking for you, Stone, and hope you go to FOX News as that is a very good station and is being heard and appreciated by others more all the time. Soon they may very well be No. 1. So, good luck, Stone, and thanks for all the wonderful stories you did so well, especially the one with your dad.

I hope Stone will replace Katie Couric! If not, I'll settle for him as a co-anchor for Katie. He has a charm that is unmatched by any other anchor.

Stone is the best! If NBC's ratings are in the hole, they should be getting rid of the ones putting it there...not the ones who have been humble, consistent, and very professional throughout...hence, Stone Phillips. Like so many others, I will go where ever Stone goes. His integrity pours into whatever he does. I wish you the best, Stone! You surely deserve it!

I was shocked about Stone Phillips leaving Dateline. He is an institution as having started that show,,he was Dateline! I really like Ann Curry and I am sure that she was hearbroken about Stone leaving. I hope that Stone ends up with his own show on Fox News. They are the future of network news. He is too good and too professional so not land a better job than what he had. NBC is not thinking!

I didn't find out until recently that Stone Phillips is no longer with Dateline. What a disappointment. He was a reporter who was never "in your face." Soft spoken and very good looking. He'll truly be missed, and hope his presence will soon be found on the Fox network.

I was saddened to see Stone Phillips leave "Dateline", but come on 7 million dollars to do what he does. He will probably be better off with another network since Dateline has morphed from a news program to a cheap reality show i.e. "To catch a Predator" How many times do we have to see these pathetic losers and child abusers getting caught before we can move onto something newsworthy. He will be better off without NBC restricting his abilities as a news reporter.
